This Hayom Yom explains that the word mitzvah means connection: one who does a mitzvah is joined with Atzmus, the One Who commands it, and that bond is the reward of a mitzvah. The analogy of a sage who gives a simple person a command shows how the command gives him existence and unites the two — whatever the command may be.
