אֲנָא גַבְרָא דַחֲזָא עָנְיִי בְּחוּטְרָא דְרָדֵי בְּרוּגְזֵיהּ:
I amthat man who has seen affliction by the rodthat chastises in his anger.
יָתִי דְבַר וְאוֹבִיל חֲשׁוֹכָא וְלָא לְאַנְהָרָא:
He has led and brought me to darkness, and not to light.
בְּרַם בִּי יָתוֹב יְגַלְגֵל עָלַי מְחָתֵיהּ כָּל יוֹמָא:
Indeed, against me he will turn, heapingupon me his blows all day.
עָתַק בִּסְרִי מִמְכְתָּשִׁין וּמַשְׁכִי מִן מְחָתָא תְּבַר גַרְמַי:
My flesh is worn outfrom beatings, my skinfrom the blow. He has shattered my bones.
בָּנָה עָלַי כַּרְכּוֹמִין וְאַקֵּף קַרְתָּא וַעֲקַר רֵישֵׁי עַמְמַיָּא וְשַׁלְהֵי אִנּוּן:
He has builtsiege works and surroundedthe city. He has uprooted the headsof the people and weariedthem.
בְּבֵית יִסּוּרִין דַחֲשׁוֹכָא אוֹתְבַנִּי כְּמֵיתִין דְאָזְלִין לְעַלְמָא אוֹחֲרָן:
He has caused me to dwell in a darkprison like the deadwho have gone to the other world.
סָגַר בַּתְרַי בְּגִין דְלָא אֶפּוֹק מִן טְרִיקָא יְקַר עַל רִגְלַי כְּבָלִין דִנְחָשָׁא:
He has locked me inso that I cannot go outfrom the prison. He has put heavy brassfetters on my feet.
אַף אֲרוּם אֶצְוַח וַאֲצַלֵּי אִסְתַּתִּים בֵּית צְלוֹתִי:
Even when I cry out and praythe house of my prayer is blocked.
סָגַר אוֹרְחָי בְּמַרְמֵירִין פְּסִילָן שְׁבִילַי סְרַךְ:
He has closed my paths with hewnmarble stones. He has confounded my paths.
דוּבָּא מְכַמֵּן הוּא לִי אַרְיָא דְמִיטַמַּר בִּכְבִישָׁא:
He is a bear lying in wait for me, a lionhiding in a hallow.
אוֹרְחָי סְרַךְ וְשַׁסְעַנִּי שַׁוִינִי צָדוּ:
He has confounded my path and rent me. He has made me desolate.
מָתַח קַשְׁתֵּיהּ וְעַתְּדַנִי הֵיךְ פַּלְגָלִיסָא לְגִירָא:
He draws his bow and has set me as a target for the arrow.
אָעִיל בְּכִלְיָתַי גִירֵי תֵיקֵיהּ:
He made the arrows of his quiver enter my vitals.
הֲוֵיתִי חוֹכָא לְכָל פְּרִיצֵי עַמִּי וּמְזַמְרָן עֲלַי כָּל יוֹמָא:
I have become a laughing stock to allthe degenerate of my people; they mock me in song all day.
אַשְׂבִּיעַנִּי מְרִירַת חֵיוָן אַרְוָנִי גִידָא:
He has sated me with gallof snakes and made me drunk with wormwood.
וְרִצַּץ בִּפְרִידָן שִׁינַי כְּנַע יָתִי בְקִטְמָא:
And he crushed my teeth with gravel; he has pressed me into ashes.
וְקָצַת מִלְמִשְׁאַל שְׁלַם נַפְשִׁי אַנְשִׁיתִי טִיבוּתָא:
And my soul shrinks fromasking for peace; I have forgotten goodness.
וַאֲמַרִית אוֹבַד תּוּקְפִי וְטוּבָא דַהֲוֵיתִי אוֹרִיךְ מִן קֳדָם יְיָ:
And I said, “My strength is destroyed andthe goodness which I had longed for frombefore the Lord.
אִדְכַּר עִנּוּי נַפְשִׁי וּמַה דְאַמְרִידוּ בִי סַנְאַי וְאַשְׁקִין יָתִי גִידִין וְרֵישֵׁי חִיוָן:
“Remember the afflictionof my soul and how my foes embitteredme and caused me to drink wormwoodand the poison of snakes.”
מִדְכַּר תִּדְכַּר וְתַצְלֵי עֲלַי נַפְשִׁי עַל סִיגוּפָא:
My soul surely will remember and bow down within medue to affliction.
דָּא נֶחְמָתָא אָתִיב עַל לִבִּי בְּגִין כֵּן אוֹרִיךְ:
טִיבוּתָא דַייָ אֲרוּם לָא פָסָקוּ אֲרוּם לָא אִתְמְנִיעוּ רַחֲמוֹהִי:
The goodness of the Lord, for his mercies do not end nor have they ceased.
נִיסִין חַדְתִּין מַרְחִישׁ בְּצַפְרַיָּא סַגִּיאָה הִיא הֵיְמנוּתָךְ:
He brings forth newwonders in the mornings; great is your faithfulness.
חוּלָקִי יְיָ אֲמָרִית נַפְשִׁי בְּגִין כֵּן אוֹרִיךְ לֵיהּ:
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul; therefore I will hope in him.
טַב יְיָ לְסוֹבְרִין לְפוּרְקָנֵיהּ לְנַפְשָׁא דִתְבַע אוּלְפָנֵיהּ:
The Lord is good to those who hopefor his salvation; to the soul who seeks hisinstruction.****
טָב לְאוֹרָכָא וּלְמִשְׁתֵּק עַד דִמְטֵי פוּרְקָנָא דַייָ:
It is good to wait and be silent until the salvation of the Lordcomes.
טָב הוּא לְגַבְרָא אֲרוּם יְאַלֵּף נַפְשֵׁיהּ לְסוֹבָרָא נִיר פִּקּוּדַיָּא בְּטַלְיוּתֵיהּ:
It is good for a manto train his soulto bear the yokeof the commandments in his youth.
יְתִיב בִּלְחוֹדוֹהִי וְיִשְׁתּוֹק וְיִסְבּוֹל יְסוּרִין דְאָתִין עֲלוֹהִי בְּגִין יִחוּדָא דִשְׁמָא דַייָ דְמִשְׁתַּלְחִין לְאִתְפְּרַע מִינֵיהּ עַל חוֹבָא קַלִּילָא דְחַב בְּעַלְמָא הָדֵין עַד כַּד יָחוּס עֲלוֹהִי וְיִטְלִינוּן מִנֵּיהּ וִיקַבֵּל אַפֵּי שְׁלִים לְעַלְמָא דְאָתֵי:
Let him sit alone and be silent, bearingthe corrections which have come upon him, for the sake of the unity of the name of the Lord, which have been sent to punish him for the minor sins which he has committed in this world, until he have mercy upon him and lift them from him so that he may receive him perfected in the world to come.
יִּתֵּן בְּעַפְרָא פּוּמֵיהּ וְיִשְׁתַּטַּח קֳדָם רִבּוֹנֵיהּ מָאִים אִית סְבַר:
Let him put his mouth to the dustand prostrate himself before his master perhaps there is hope.
יוֹשִׁיט לְמָחֵיהּ לֵיהּ לִיסָתָא בְּגִין דַחַלְתָּא דַייָ יִסְבַּע קְלָנָא:
**Let him turn his cheek to the one that smites,**for the sake of the fear of the Lord, let him be filled with insult.
אֲרוּם לָא יִשְׁלֵי יְיָ לְעוֹבָדוֹי לְעַלָּם לְמִמְסָרִינוּן בִּידָא דְסַנְאֵיהוֹן:
For the Lord will not neglecthis servants **forever,**giving them over into the hand of their enemy.
אֲרוּם אֶלָהֵן בְּרֵישָׁא יִתְבַר וּבָתַר כֵּן יְתוּב וְיִרְחוּם לְצַדִּיקַיָּא בִּסְגִיאוּת טֵיבוּתֵיהּ:
Butfirst he breaksand afterwards he repents and has mercyon the righteous in the abundance of his goodness.
אֲרוּם מִן בִּגְלַל דְלָא עַנֵּי גְבַר יָת נַפְשֵׁיהּ וְאַעְדֵי זְחוּחָה מִלִּבֵּיהּ בְּגִין כֵּן גָרַם לְאִסְתַּקְפָּא תְבִירָא בִּבְנֵי אֱנָשָׁא:
Forsince man did not afflicthis soul nor removed arrogance **from his heart,**therefore hecaused destructionto come upon the sons of men.
לְמַכְּכָא וּלְכַבְּשָׁא תְּחוֹת רִגְלוֹי כָּל אֲסִירֵי אַרְעָא:
Humblingand subduing all the prisoners of the earth under his feet,
לְמַצְלֵי דִין דִגְּבַר מִסְכֵּן כָּל קֳבֵיל אַפֵּי עִילָאָה:
And perverting the justice of apoor man in the presence of the Most High,
לְסַרְכָא אֱנָשׁ מִסְכֵּן בְּמַצּוּתֵיהּ אֶפְשַׁר דְמִן קֳדָם יְיָ לָא יִתְגְּלֵי:
Confounding apoor **man in his quarrels;**is it possible that this will not be revealed before the Lord?
מָן הוּא אֵינַשׁ דַאֲמַר וַהֲוָה בִּישָׁתָא מִתְעַבְדָא בְּעַלְמָא אֱלָהֵן מִן בִּגְלַל דַעֲבָדוּ מָה דְלָא אִתְפְּקָדוּ מִן פּוּמָא דַייָ:
Who is the man who has spokenand an evil thing had been done in the world, unless because they did that which they were not commanded bythe mouth of the Lord?
מִפִּי אֱלָהָא לָא תִיפּוֹק בִּישָׁתָא אֱלָהֵן עַל בְּרַת קָלָא רְמִיזָא בְּגִין חֲטוּפִין דְאִתְמְלִיאַת אַרְעָא וּבְעִידַן דְבָעֵי לְמִגְזַר טוּבָא בְּעַלְמָא מִן פּוּם קְוּדְשָׁא נַפְקָא:
From the mouth of God Most High there does not issue evil, rather by the hint of a whisper, because of the violence with which the land is filled. But when he desires to decree good in the world it issues from the holy mouth.
מַה מָמוֹן יִשְׁכַּח אֱנָשׁ דְיָחוֹב עַל יוֹמֵי חַיּוֹהִי גַבְרָא רַשִּׁיעָא עַל חוֹבוֹהִי:
What profit shall a manfind who sins all the days of **his life;**a wicked man for his sins?
נִבְלוֹשׁ אוֹרְחָנָא וּנְבַקֵּר וּנְתוּב בִּתְיוּבְתָּא קֳדָם יְיָ:
Let us search and examine our ways; and turnin repentance before the Lord.
נְטוּל לִבְבָנָא בְרִיר וְנִרְמֵי חֲטוֹף וּגְזֵילָן מִן יְדָנָא וּנְתוּב קֳדָם יְיָ אֱלָהָנָא דִשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ בִּשְׁמֵי מְרוֹמָא:
Let us lift ourcleansed heartsand cast away theft and robbery from **our hands.**And let us repent before God the dwelling of whose Shekinah is in heaven above.
נַחְנָא מְרַדְנָא סַרָבְנָא וּמִן בִּגְלַל דְלָא הֲדַרְנָא לְוָתָךְ אַנְתְּ לָא שְׁבַקְתְּ:
We have rebelled and been disobedientand since we did not return to you, you have not forgiven.
טְלַלְתָּא עֲלָנָא בִרְגַז וּרְדַפְתָּנָא בְגָלוּתָא קְטַלְתָּא וְלָא חַסְתָּא:
You have coveredus in anger and pursued usin exile. You have killed and have not pitied.
טְלַלְתָּא שְׁמַיָּא בַעֲנָנֵי יְקָרֵי דִילָךְ מִן בִּגְלַל דְלָא תֶעֱבַר לְוָתָךְ צְלוֹתָנָא:
You have coveredthe heavens with your cloudsof glory so that our prayers cannot cross to you.
טַלְטוּלִין וּרְטוּשִׁין שַׁוִיתָא יָתָנָא בֵּינֵי עַמְמַיָּא:
You have made us like wanderers and vagabonds among the nations.
פְּתָחוּ עֲלָנָא פּוּמְהוֹן כָּל בַּעֲלֵי דְבָבָנָא לְמִגְזַר עֲלָנָא גְזֵירִין בִּישִׁין:
**All our enemies have opened their mouths against us,**to announce evil decrees against us.
אֵימָתָא וְזִיעָא הֲוָה לָנָא מִנְהוֹן רְתִיתָא וּתְבִירָא:
Panic and fear have come upon usbecause of them, trembling and destructionhave seized us.
הֵיךְ יִבְלִין דְמַיָּא זַלְגַת עֵינִי דִמְעָן עַל תְּבִירָא דִכְנִישַׁת עַמִּי:
Like streams of water my eyes flowed with tears because of the destruction of the Congregation of my people.
עֵינִי זַלְגַת דִמְעָן וְלָא תִשְׁתּוֹק מִלְמִבְכֵּי מִדְלֵית פָאִיג עַתְקִי וּמַמְלַל תַּנְחוּמִין לִי:
My eye weepstears and does not ceasefrom crying. There is no respitefrom my anguish or anyone to comfort me;
כְּדוֹ דְיִסְתְּכֵי וְיֶחֱזֵי עוּלְבָּנִי יְיָ מִן שְׁמַיָּא:
Until the Lord looks out and seesmy humiliation from heaven.
בְּכוּתָא דְעֵינִי אִסְתַּקְפַת לִמְרַע נַפְשִׁי עַל חוּרְבַּן פִּילְכֵי דְעַמִּי וְנִווּל בְּנָתָא דִירוּשְׁלֵם קַרְתִּי:
The weeping of my eyes is the causeof the affliction of my soul /bover the destruction of the districts of my people and the humiliation of the daughtersof Jerusalem, my city.
כָּמָנָא כָמַנּוּ לִי הֵיךְ כְּצִפְּרָא בַעֲלֵי דְבָבִי עַל מַגָּן:
My enemies, without cause, laid a trap for me like a bird.
עֲבָרוּ בְגוּבָא חַיָּי וּרְגִימוּ אַבְנָא בִי:
They caused my life to pass in the pit and cast stones at me.
שָׁטוּ מַיָּא עַל רֵישִׁי אֲמָרִית בְּמֵימְרִי אִתְגַזְרִית מִן עַלְמָא:
Waters flowed over my head. I saidin my word, “I am cut offfrom the world.”
צַלֵּיתִי לִשְׁמָךּ יְיָ מִן גוֹב אַרְעִיתָא:
I prayed to your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit.
צְלוֹתִי קַבֵּילְתָּא בְּזִימְנָא הַהִיא וּכְעַן לָא תִכְסֵי אוּדְנָךְ מִלְקַבָּלָא צְלוֹתִי לְאַרְוָחוּתְנִי בְּגִין בָּעוּתִי:
You received my prayerat that time, and now do not cover your earsfrom receiving my prayer to give me reliefbecause of my plea.
קָרִיבְתָּא מַלְאָכָא לְשֵׁזְבוּתָנִי בְּיוֹמָא דְצַלִּיתִי לָךְ אָמַרְתְּ בְּמֵימְרָךְ לָא תִדְחָל:
You broughtthe angel nearto save me, in the day that I prayed to you. You saidby your Memra, “Do not fear.”
נָצֵיתָא יְיָ לְעַבְדִין מְצוּתָא לְנַפְשִׁי פְּרֵיקְתָּא מִן יְדֵיהוֹן חַיָּי:
**You have fought, O Lord,**against those who made a quarrel with my soul. You delivered my lifefrom their hands.
חֲזֵיתָא יְיָ סְרוֹל דִסְרִיכוּ לִי דוּן דִינִי:
**You have seen, O Lord,**the wrong by which they wronged me. Judge my case.
גְלֵי קֳדָמָךְ כָּל נִקְמַתְהוֹן כָּל מְזִימַתְהוֹן עָלָי:
All their vengeance has been revealedbefore you, all their evil plans against me.
שְׁמִיעַ קֳדָמָךְ כְּסוּפֵיהוֹן יְיָ כָּל מְזִימַתְהוֹן עָלָי:
Their taunts were heardbefore you, O Lord, all their evil plans against me.
סִפְוַת קָמִין עָלַי וְהֶגְיוֹנְהוֹן עָלַי כָּל יוֹמָא:
The lips of the enemiesare against me and their mutterings are against me all day.
מוֹתְבֵיהוֹן וּזְקִפַתְהוֹן אִסְתַּכֵּל אֲנָא זְמָרֵהוֹן:
Look at their sitting and rising! I am the object of their taunt-songs.
תְּתִיב לְהוֹן גְמוּלָא בִישָׁא יְיָ כְּעוֹבָדֵי יְדֵיהוֹן:
May you return to themevil recompense, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.
תִּתֵּן לְהוֹן תְּבִירוּת לִבָּא וְשַׁלְאֲהוּתָךְ שַׁלְהֵי לְהוֹן:
May you give them brokenness of heart and may yourweariness wear them out.
תַּדְלְקִינוּן בְּרוּגְזָא וּתְשֵׁצִינוּן מִתְּחוֹת שְׁמֵי מְרוֹמָא דָייָ:
Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under thehigh heaven of the Lord.
