ויאמרו יותן. לא נעלם ממך כי יותן מבנין הכבד הנוסף וכן וכי יותן מים על זרע והנה יותן זכר והארץ נקבה על כן חשבו שאת הוא פעול יותן דהיינו עצם הדבר כמו את השמים ואת הארץ על כן השיב הרב מצאנו דוגמתו נעתם יחלק נשא וכבר קרא הרב בחיל כל דבר שאין בו רוח חיים זכרהו ונקבהו:
And they said, 'Yoten.' It is not hidden from you that 'Yoten' is derived from the intensive verb form, and likewise, 'Yoten' refers to the act of providing, as in 'Yoten mayim al zera,' meaning 'providing water for seed,' and behold, 'Yoten' is masculine while 'ha'aretz' (the earth) is feminine. Therefore, they thought that 'et' is the active verb form, which means the essence of the matter, like 'et hashamayim ve'et ha'aretz' (the heavens and the earth). Therefore, the Rabbi responded that we find its counterpart in the word 'ne'etam,' dividing and carrying, and the Rabbi has already called it the 'cheil' (active) of any matter that does not possess a living spirit, classifying it as masculine and feminine.
כלב בן יפונה. כבר בארתי פירושו בפרשת במדבר ויהושע בן נון:
Kaleb ben Yefuneh. I have already explained its interpretation in Parshat Bamidbar and in the book of Joshua, son of Nun.
שם ומלת מלאו כמו בקשו נפשי. שאל תטעה לומר שהוא צווי מבנין הקל כמו מלאו ידכם לפי שהוקל הלמ"ד אבל הענין מורה שהוא מהכבד כמו בקשו נפשי שלחו באש כי גם המה הוקלו ועיין רד"ק:
The word "shem" and the word "male'o" (its full form) are used in phrases like "request the fullness of my soul." Do not make the mistake of saying that it is derived from the light verb structure, as in "fill your hand" (Exodus 32:29), because the letter "lamed" was made light (omitted). Rather, the context indicates that it is derived from the heavy verb structure, as in "they sent in the fire" (Numbers 21:28), for they too made it light. Refer to Radak's commentary for further clarification.
לפני ה' כי לעולם הוא לשבח. והמעיין במקרא יראה שנמצא לפעמים במקרא גם כן מלת לפני לגנאי והכל לפי פתרון הענין:
Before the Lord, for He is forever deserving of praise. One who examines the scripture will see that at times the word "before" (lifnei) is used in a derogatory sense, but it all depends on the context of the interpretation.
נחנו הוא העיקר. ועיין פרשת מקץ כי גם שם פירש הרב כן:
We are indeed the main focus. Take a look at the portion of Miketz, for the rabbi there also explained it that way.
