הבעל שם טובאמר הוא ינהגנו עלמות, משל לאב המלמד לבנו הקטן לילך, כשהולך הקטן ב' או ג' פסיעות לקראת אביו מרחיק אביו את עצמו ממנו כדי שילך יותר, ואחר כך כשהולך יותר מרחיק אביו את עצמו עוד כדי שילך יותר, ועל דרך זה נקרא השם יתברך אל מסתתר, שכשהצדיק עובד את השם יתברך נדמה לו שאינו עדיין בשלימות ושהוא רחוק מהשם יתברך, כדי שיתקרב הצדיק יותר, וזהו הוא ינהגנו עלמות שזה השם יתברך מסתתר שנקרא הוא זהו כדי שינהגנו עלמות כהדין עולמיא כדי שיתקרב בכל פעם יותר, עד כאן דבריו הקדושים: (קדושת לוי פ' שמות)
For this reason, G-d is called “the hidden G-d.” For a Tzaddik never feels that he has reached perfection in serving G-d, and always feels far from Him. This is in order that he comes even closer.
