These hours — of the six and a half or the nine and a half — are called time-based hours, since they are measured according to the content of the day, whether it is long or short. So we divide it into 12 sections. And every place where the sages, may their memory be blessed, measured by hours with these hours — some say that we measure from the dawn to the appearance of the stars and some say from the sunrise to the sunset. But the first approach is the main one, as we concern ourselves about stringency and measure from the dawn to the appearance of the stars. And that is the custom that has spread in our city, Baghdad, may God protect it, to measure from the dawn to the appearance of the stars. As here we calculate the appearance of the stars as a third of an hour after the call of the muezzin in this city.
