בליל ראשון מברכים שלשה ברכות להדליק ושעשה נסים ושהחיינו, ונתנו הפוסקים ז"ל סימן עשה לך שרף ושים אותו על נס וראה אותו וחי (במדבר כא, ח), גם נרמזו באותיות מספרם שהוא אותיות שלשה שגם בם סימנם שלש"ה ר"ת שעשה להדליק שהחיינו הנרות הללו וכו', ואחר שהדליק נר ראשון יאמר הנרות הללו וכו', בנוסח המתוקן יפה שיש בו ל"ו תיבות כמנין הנרות של כל שמונת הימים, ויעמדו אשתו ובניו בשעת הברכה ובשעת הדלקת כל הנרות:

- On the first night, we bless three blessings: Lehadlik, She'asa, and Shehechiyanu. Our blessed sages gave us a mnemonic for this, namely, the verse "Make a fiery seraph, raise it up on a staff (nes), behold it and live." [Numbers 21:8]... and after lighting the first candle, one says hanerot halalu . In the correct version of this text there are 36 words, corresponding to the candles of all eight days of the festival. And one should stand, together with one's wife and children, during the lighting of all the candles.
