They will not have—the kohanim, the Levites, the entire tribe of Levi—a portion or an inheritance with Yisroel; Adonoy’s fire-offerings and His inheritance will they eat.
The priests the Levites, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part or inheritance with Yisra᾽el: the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his dues shall they eat.
There shall not be to the Cohanim, the Levites, the entire tribe of Levi, [both the unblemished and the blemished], a portion [in the spoils] and an inheritance [in the land] with Israel. The fire-offerings of the L-rd [the Temple offerings] and His inheritance [the boundary offerings, i.e., terumoth and ma'asroth] shall they eat,
וְנַחֲלָ֥ה לֹא־יִֽהְיֶה־לּ֖וֹ בְּקֶ֣רֶב אֶחָ֑יו יְהֹוָה֙ ה֣וּא נַחֲלָת֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּר־לֽוֹ׃{ס}
But he will have no territory among his brothers; Adonoy is his territory, as He said to him.
Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the Lord is their inheritance, as he has said to them.
But he shall not have an [absolute] inheritance in the midst of his brothers; the L-rd is his inheritance, as He spoke to him [(Numbers 18:20)].
And this will be the stipend of the kohanim from the people from the slaughterers of [permitted] meat, whether an ox or a sheep; he will give the kohein the foreleg and the jaw and the [fourth] stomach.
And this shall be the priest’s allotment from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; they shall give to the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
And this shall be the judgment for the Cohanim from the people, [but not from the Cohanim (who slaughter for themselves)]. From the slaughterers of the slaughtering, whether ox or sheep [Animals (as opposed to beasts) are excluded], he shall give to the Cohein the shoulder [(from the knee-joint to the shoulder blade)], the cheeks [with the tongue], and the maw.
The first portion of your grain, your wine, and your olive oil, and the first of the shearing of your sheep are you to give him.
The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thy oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
The first [i.e., terumah] of your corn, your wine, and your oil, and the first of the [annual] shearing of your flock shall you give to him.
כִּ֣י ב֗וֹ בָּחַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ מִכׇּל־שְׁבָטֶ֑יךָ לַעֲמֹ֨ד לְשָׁרֵ֧ת בְּשֵׁם־יְהֹוָ֛ה ה֥וּא וּבָנָ֖יו כׇּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃{ס}
For him did Adonoy, your God, choose from all your tribes to stand and perform the service in the name of Adonoy, he and his sons for all time.
For the Lord thy God has chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever.
For in him did the L-rd your G-d choose from all of your tribes to stand and minister [(whence it is derived that the ministrant must stand)] in the name of the L-rd, he and his sons all of the days.
If a Levite should come from one of your cities throughout Yisroel where he sojourns, coming will all his soul’s desire to the place that Adonoy chooses.
And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Yisra᾽el, where he sojourned, and come in all eagerness to the place which the Lord shall choose;
And if the Levite [i.e., a Cohein] come from one of your cities, from all of Israel, wherein he lives, and he come in all the desire of his soul [to sacrifice his gift or obligatory offerings] to the place that the L-rd shall choose,
He shall perform the service in the name of Adonoy, his God, like all his brother Levites who stand there in Adonoy’s Presence.
then he shall minister in the name of the Lord his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, who stand there before the Lord.
then, [even if his watch is not officiating], he shall minister in the name of the L-rd his G-d, as all of his brothers, the Levites, [i.e., the Cohanim] who stand there before the L-rd.
חֵ֥לֶק כְּחֵ֖לֶק יֹאכֵ֑לוּ לְבַ֥ד מִמְכָּרָ֖יו עַל־הָאָבֽוֹת׃{ס}
They shall eat equal portions, except for what the families sold [to one another].
They shall have like portions to eat, besides that which comes of the sale of his patrimony.
Portion [of the hides (of the burnt-offerings) and the flesh of the he-goat sin-offerings] as portion shall they eat [along with the Cohanim of the watch], except for the sale of the fathers [i.e., those sacrifices offered not by virtue of the festival, e.g., the temidin, the mussafin of Shabbath, and gift and vow offerings, the rights to which were sold by their fathers in the days of David and Samuel, when the rotation of priestly watches was instituted].
Because you are entering the land that Adonoy, your God, is giving you; do not learn to perpetrate the abominations of those nations.
When thou art come to the land which the Lord thy God gives thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
When you come to the land that the L-rd your G-d gives to you, do not learn to do as the abominations of those nations [(but you may learn to understand the falsity of their ways and to teach your children, by identifying them as heathen practices, not to emulate them.)]
Let there not exist among you anyone who passes his son or daughter through fire, who practices the kosem-occult; who practices time-frame-occult or who divines portentuous events or a sorcerer.
There must not be found among you anyone that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, a soothsayer, or an enchanter, or a witch,
There shall not be found among you one who passes his son or daughter through fire [This is the service of the Molech (see Leviticus 18:21)], a diviner of divinations [one who "divines" by holding his stick, whether to go or not to go], a me'onein [one who assigns an auspicious "time" (onah) for a particular undertaking], a necromancer [one who interprets natural happenings as signs and portents], and a sorcerer.
Or a snake charmer, or one who invokes the spirit of Ov or yidoni, or communicates with the dead.
or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
A chover chaver [one who "congregates" snakes or scorpions and the like into one spot], a shoel ov [one who raises the spirit of the dead, which speaks from his arm-pit], a yidoni [(see Leviticus 19:31)], and one who inquires of the dead [e.g., via a skull].
For Adonoy’s abomination is anyone perpetrating this and because of these abominations, Adonoy, your God, is expelling them from before you.
For all that do these things are an abomination to the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God drives them out from before thee.
For the abomination of the L-rd are all who do [(even one of)] these, and because of these abominations the L-rd your G-d drives them out before you.
Walk in perfect trust with Adonoy, your God.
Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.
Whole shall you be with the L-rd your G-d [i.e., If you repose all of your trust in Him, without probing the future, but accepting wholeheartedly all that befalls you, then you shall be "with the L-rd your G-d," and His portion.]
Although these nations whom you are inheriting heed augurers and sorcerers, but as to you—Adonoy, your God, has not given you their status.
For these nations, which thou shalt dispossess, hearken to soothsayers, and to diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God has not permitted thee so to do.
For these nations that you inherit hearken to me'onenim (see 10) and to diviners; but you, not thus [to hearken to them] did the L-rd your G-d relegate you, [for He reposed His shechinah on the prophets and the urim vethumim.]
A prophet from your midst, of your brethren, like me, will Adonoy, your God, establish for you; heed him.
The Lord thy God will raise up to thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like me; to him you shall hearken;
A prophet from your midst, from your brothers, such as I [i.e., just as I am from your midst and from your brothers] shall the L-rd your G-d raise up for you [in my place, and so, from prophet to prophet]; to him shall you hearken.
Exactly as you requested from Adonoy, your God, at Choreiv, on the day of assembly, saying, ‘‘Let me not continue to hear the voice of Adonoy, my God, and this great fire let me not see any more as that I will not die.’’
according to all that thou didst desire of the Lord thy God in Ḥorev in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
As all that you asked from the L-rd your G-d in Chorev, on the day of the assembly, saying: I shall not continue hearing the voice of the L-rd my G-d, and this great fire I shall see no more, that I not die.
Adonoy said to me, ‘‘What they said is excellent.
And the Lord said to me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
And the L-rd said to me: They have done well in speaking as they did.
A prophet will I establish for them from among their brethren like you, and I will place My words in his mouth and he will tell them everything that I command him.
I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.
A prophet shall I raise up for them from the midst of their brothers, such as you, and I shall place My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
Now, the man who does not heed My words that he speaks in My Name; I will demand from him.
And it shall come to pass, that whoever will not hearken to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
And it shall be, the man who will not heed My words, which he shall speak in My name, I shall require it of him. [One who suppresses his prophecy, one who transgresses the words of a prophet, and a prophet who transgresses his own words incur death at the hands of Heaven.]
But the prophet who will malevolently make a statement in My Name, something that I did not instruct him to say, or which he says in the name of foreign gods, that prophet must die.
But the prophet, who shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.
But the prophet who shall presume to speak a thing in My name which I did not command him to speak [(but which I commanded his fellow prophet)], and one who speaks in the name of other gods, [even if he is in agreement with the halachah, forbidding what is forbidden, and permitting what is permitted], that prophet shall be put to death [by strangulation. Three incur death by strangulation: one who prophesies what he did not hear, one who prophesies what was told to his fellow, and one who prophesies in the name of idolatry.]
If you should say to yourself, ‘‘How can we know [which is] the statement that Adonoy did not speak?’’
And if thou say in thy heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?
And when you say in your heart, [as you will in the incident of Chananiah ben Azur and Jeremiah (see Jeremiah 27:16, 19-22)]: How shall we know the thing which the L-rd has not spoken?
אֲשֶׁר֩ יְדַבֵּ֨ר הַנָּבִ֜יא בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֗ה וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֤ה הַדָּבָר֙ וְלֹ֣א יָבֹ֔א ה֣וּא הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־דִבְּר֖וֹ יְהֹוָ֑ה בְּזָדוֹן֙ דִּבְּר֣וֹ הַנָּבִ֔יא לֹ֥א תָג֖וּר מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃{ס}
Should the prophet speak in Adonoy’s Name, and the matter does not happen and is not fulfilled, that is the statement that Adonoy did not speak. The prophet spoke it malevolently; do not fear him.
Know that when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it out of presumption; thou shalt not be afraid of him.
What the prophet shall speak in the name of the L-rd [i.e., "This and this shall happen to you"] and the thing not be and not come to pass, that is the thing which the L-rd has not spoken, [and put him to death. (For an instance in which he says: "The L-rd has told me to tell you to do thus and thus," see 13:9 and 15 above)]. In presumption has the prophet spoken it; do not hold back from [incriminating] him [and do not fear incurring punishment because of him].
