מעתהנבין המאמר אלו ספק צרכנו במדבר כו' ולא האכילנו את המן, ויקשה היינו סיפק היינו מן, הלא במן סיפקם, והנראה שאין כוונת המן הסיפוק ולא סיפוק המן, רק כוונתו שהשגחת האלהים הי' כ"כ דבוקה בהם עד שאף בארץ ציה ושממה אשר מצד מערכת השמים היו ראוים לנזק הגוף ותחלואים רעים, אבל השגחת האלהים עליהם היה כ"כ חזק ועצום שנשארו בארץ לא זרועה בריאים וחזקים כבגן אלהים. וזה היה מהצורך לשלימות המזג, וזה המוליכך במדבר הגדול והנורא כו' שמלתך לא בלתה ורגלך לא בצקה, וזה אלו ספק צרכינו במדבר א"ש ולא האכילנו את המן כו'. כי אף שלימות המזג הי' מהצורך לשלימות האומה בכללה, כי כמו ששלימות המזג הוא הכרחי לשלימות אדם פרטי, כן הוא מההכרח לשלימות אומה בכללה כי החלק יעיד על הכלל, והנה נתינת המן אמה"כ הנני ממטיר לכם לחם מן השמים, מזון נאות למזג האדם, ואמר לחם מן השמים, ר"ל שלא יאכלו אותו לתכלית התאוה ולא יעשה ממנו סחורה כי הוא לחם משמים נתון בהשגחה עליונה, ולכן יהיה לקיטתו ושמירתו ואכילתו תיקונים אליהם כפי שכל אלהי ולא כפי התאוה החומרית, ואמר ויצא העם ולקטו דבר יום ביומו כי הוא מזון ניתן כפי הצורך והכרח, ואינו נקנה בהשתדלות וחריצות ועמל, אלא בחסד עליון, ולכ"א יום יום להגיד שיודו בהשגחתו של כל יום ויום ויכירו בנסיון שהוא דבר מושגח מאתו ויבטחו בו תמיד לתת אכלס בעתו, ואמר למען אנסנו הילך בתורתי אם לא, כי היה נותן להם המן כדי שיהיו פנוים מבקשת מזונותיהם, ויהיו פנוים לעסק התורה העתידה להנתן להם. והנראה שעל ידי המן היה הישרת מדותיהם, כהסתפקות ורחמנות, וכל מדותיהם על אדני אמת וצדק כוננו, וזה היה הכרח גדול לשלימות המדות אשר הוא ענף לשלימות האמתי ולכ"א --
If God had provided all our needs in the wilderness but not fed us manna, it would have been enough: “Providing all our needs” and “feeding us manna” are not the same thing. “Providing all our needs” means that even though we were in a harsh wilderness, God's providence protected the people so that it was as if they were in a lush and fertile place. Through divine providence Israel was able to attain the second type of perfection: physical perfection. Israel grew strong through God's providence in the wilderness. “Their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become cracked.” Such physical perfection, even though it was for the individual, was necessary for the nation as a whole. By giving the people the manna in the manner that God did, he also helped instill a deep sense of trust in God in the nation. They only gathered as much as they needed for the day, so they had to trust God would provide them with manna the following days as well. People learned to trust the divine wisdom rather than their physical desires. Also by providing them with their daily food, God allowed the people the freedom to devote themselves to spiritual pursuits and the study of Torah rather than worry where their food would come from. Thus the discipline of gathering manna and the physical strength God gave them helped the Israelites cultivate the other forms of human perfection which Maimonides mentioned.
