Adonoy appeared to him in the groves of Mamrei and he was sitting at the door of the tent in the heat of the day.
And the Lord appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
And the L-rd appeared to him [to "visit the sick," it being the third day after his circumcision,] in the terebinths of Mamre, [Mamre having counseled him concerning circumcision]. And he sat at the opening of the tent [to host passersby] in the heat of the day.
He lifted his eyes and saw, and behold three men were standing over him. He saw [them], and ran from the door of the tent to greet them, and he bowed down to the earth.
and he raised his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the ground,
And he lifted his eyes and he saw, and, behold, three men [i.e., angels] were standing over him, [one to give tidings to Sarah (that she would bear a son), one to overturn Sodom, and one to heal Abraham.] And he saw [that they were hesitating to approach him], and he ran towards them from the opening of the tent, and he bowed down to the ground.
He said, My Master, if I have found favor in Your eyes, please do not bypass your servant.
and said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
And he said [to the greatest of them]: My lord, if I have now found favor in your eyes, do not now pass away from your servant.
Let a bit of water be brought and wash your feet. Rest yourselves under the tree.
let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
Let there be taken now a little water and wash your feet [(Abraham taking them for Arabs, who bow down idolatrously "to the dust of their feet")], and recline under the tree.
I will get bread and you will sustain your heart. Afterwards you will continue on your way, since you have passed by your servant. They said, Fine, do as you have said.
and I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort your hearts; after that you shall pass on: seeing that you are come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
And I shall take a piece of bread, and feast your hearts, and then pass on. For you have therefore passed by (the domicile of) your servant. And they said: So do, as you have spoken.
Avraham hurried to Sarah’s tent and said, Hurry! [take] three measures of the finest flour; knead it and make cake-rolls.
And Avraham hastened into the tent to Sara, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.
And Abraham hurried to the tent, to Sarah, and he said: Bring quickly three measures of meal [to cover the pot], fine flour [for cakes], and knead it, and make cakes.
Avraham ran to the cattle, and took a tender, choice calf. He gave it to the lad. and hurried to prepare it.
And Avraham ran to the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it to the young man; and he hurried to prepare it.
And Abraham ran to the herd, and he took a calf, tender and good, and he gave it to the youth [Ishmael], and he hurried to dress it.
He took butter, milk, and the calf he had prepared, and set it before them. He stood over them under the tree, and they ate.
And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
And he took cream and milk and the calf which he had dressed, and he set it before them, and he stood over them under the tree and they [gave the impression that they] ate.
They said to him, Where is Sarah, your wife? He said Here, in the tent.
And they said to him, Where is Sara thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
And they said to him: Where is Sarah, your wife? And he said: Behold, she is in the tent. [(She is modest.)]
He said I will return to you next year, and Sarah, your wife will have a son. Sarah was listening at the door of the tent, that was behind him.
And he said, I will certainly return to thee at this season; and, lo, Sara thy wife shall have a son. And Sara heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
And he said: I [the L-rd] shall surely return to you at this time [Pesach] next year, and, behold, a son to Sarah your wife. And Sarah was listening at the opening of the tent, and it [the opening] was behind him [the angel].
Avraham and Sarah were old, well on in years. Sarah no longer had the way of women.
Now Avraham and Sara were old, advanced in age; and it had ceased to be with Sara after the manner of women.
And Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. There had ceased in Sarah the way of women [i.e., menstruation].
Sarah laughed to herself saying, Now that I am worn out, shall I have the pleasure [of a son], my master being [also] an old man.
Therefore Sara laughed within herself, saying, After I am grown old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
And Sarah laughed in [i.e., concerning] her innards, saying: After withering, I have been rejuvenated, and my lord is old.
Adonoy said to Avraham, Why did Sarah laugh saying, Can I really give birth when I am old?
And the Lord said to Avraham, Why did Sara laugh, saying, Shall I indeed bear a child, who am old?
And the L-rd said to Abraham: Why, now, did Sarah laugh, saying: "Will I in truth give birth when I am old?" [(Scripture alters her words here for "the sake of peace." She really said: "when my lord is old.")]
Is anything too far removed from Adonoy? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time of life, and Sarah will have a son.
Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return to thee, at this season, and Sara shall have a son.
Is anything beyond the L-rd? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.
Sarah denied it saying, I did not laugh, for she was afraid. He said, Not so, for you did laugh.
Then Sara denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And He said, No; but thou didst laugh.
And Sarah denied, saying: "I did not laugh," for she was afraid. And He said: "No, but you did laugh!"
The men stood up from where they were, and they gazed upon Sedom. Avraham went with them to send them [on their way].
And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sedom: and Avraham went with them to bring them on the way.
And the men arose from there, and they lowered at the face of Sodom. And Abraham went with them to escort them.
Adonoy said, Shall I conceal from Avraham what I am about to do?
And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Avraham that thing which I intend to do;
And the L-rd said: Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do [to Sodom]?
Avraham is indeed to become a great and mighty nation, and through him shall be blessed all the nations of the world.
seeing that Avraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
— when Abraham is destined to be a great and mighty nation in whom all the nations of the world will be blessed?
For I have given him special attention because he commands his children, and his household after him, and they will preserve the way of Adonoy, doing charity and justice, so that Adonoy will bring upon Avraham all that which He has spoken of him.
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Avraham that which He has spoken of him.
For I have known him because he commands his children and his household after him to keep the way of the L-rd to do righteousness and judgment so that the L-rd bring upon Abraham what He spoke concerning him.
[Thus] Adonoy said, The wailing concerning Sedom and Amorah is so great, and their sin is so very grave.
And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sedom and ῾Amora is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
And the L-rd said: The outcry of Sodom and Amorah, because it has become great, and their sin, because it is very heavy —
I will descend now and see, if their wailing which has come to Me is indicative of their conduct; destruction [shall come upon them]. If not I will know.
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come to Me; and if not, I will know.
I shall go down now and I shall see: If according to its outcry which comes unto Me, they have done [and persist in doing, I shall bring] destruction [upon them]. And if [they do] not [persist in their evil], I shall know [how to exact retribution for what they have already done].
The men turned from where they were, and went toward Sedom. Avraham was still standing before Adonoy.
And the men turned their faces from there and went toward Sedom: but Avraham stood yet before the Lord.
And the men turned from there [whence Abraham had accompanied them], and they went to Sodom; and Abraham still stood before the L-rd.
Avraham came forward and said, Will You [actually] destroy the righteous with the wicked ?
And Avraham drew near, and said, Wilt Thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
And Abraham drew near [to contend, to conciliate, and to pray], and he said: Will You also cause to perish the righteous one with the wicked one?
Suppose there are fifty righteous people in the midst of the city, will You still destroy it, and not bear with the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people inside it?
Perhaps there are fifty righteous within the city: wilt Thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
Perhaps there are fifty righteous ones in the midst of the city, [ten for each district, there being five (distinct) places] — Will You also cause to perish — and will You not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones in its midst?
It would be sacrilege [to attribute] to You such an act, to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. It would be sacrilege to attribute this to You : Shall the Judge of all the earth not do justice?
Far be it from Thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, far be it from Thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
It is profane in You to do such a thing, to kill a righteous one with a wicked one, rendering the righteous one like the wicked one. It is profane in You. Will the Judge of all the land not do justice?
Adonoy said; If, in Sedom, I find fifty righteous within the city, I will bear with the entire place for their sake.
And the Lord said, If I find in Sedom fifty just men within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
And the L-rd said: If I find in Sodom fifty righteous ones in the midst of the city, then I shall spare the entire place [i.e., all (five) districts] for their sake.
Avraham responded and said, Here I have begun to speak to my Master, and I am but dust and ashes.
And Avraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak to the Lord, who am but dust and ashes:
And Abraham answered and he said: I have now willed to speak to the L-rd when I should [already] have been [reduced to] dust [by the kings] and ashes [by Nimrod].
But suppose they lack five of the fifty righteous? Will You destroy all the city because of five? He said, I will not destroy if I find forty-five there.
perhaps there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt Thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And He said, If I find there forty five, I will not destroy it.
Perhaps there shall lack of the fifty righteous ones, five. Will You destroy the entire city because of the five [and not add Yourself as a "righteous One" to each district to save the whole]? And He said: I shall not destroy if I find there forty-five.
He [Avraham] continued to speak to Him and said, Suppose there are forty found there? He said, I will not do it for the sake of the forty.
And he spoke to him yet again, and said, perhaps there shall be forty found there. And He said, I will not do it for the forty’s sake.
And he ventured to speak more unto Him and he said: Perhaps there will be found there forty [in four districts. Will You not save those districts?] And He said: I shall not do [i.e., destroy] for the sake of the forty.
He said, Let not my Master show anger and I will [continue] to speak. Suppose thirty are found there? He said, I will not do it if I find thirty there.
And he said to him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: perhaps there shall thirty be found there. And He said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
And he said: Let not the L-rd be wroth and I will speak. Perhaps there will be found there thirty. And He said: I shall not do if I find there thirty.
He said, Here I wished to speak to my Master. Suppose twenty are found there? He said, I will not destroy for the sake of the twenty.
And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak to the Lord: perhaps there shall be twenty found there. And He said, I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.
And he said: Behold, I have willed to speak to the L-rd. Perhaps there will be found there twenty. And He said: I will not destroy for the sake of the twenty.
He said, Let not my Master show anger, and I will speak just once more. Suppose ten are found there? He said, I will not destroy for the sake of the ten.
And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: perhaps ten shall be found there. And He said, I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.
And he said: Let not the L-rd be wroth and I will speak but this [last] time. Perhaps there will be found there ten. And He said: I will not destroy for the sake of the ten. [He did not venture to plead for less, reasoning from the fact that Noach, his sons, and their wives (eight altogether), had failed to save their generation (and having sought for but not having found nine in combination with the L-rd)].
Adonoy departed when He finished speaking to Avraham, and Avraham returned to his place.
And the Lord went His way, as soon as He had left speaking to Avraham: and Avraham returned to his place.
And the L-rd went when He finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
