The lifetime of Sarah consisted of one hundred years, twenty years and seven years. [These were] the years of Sarah’s life.
And Sara was a hundred and twenty seven years old: these were the years of Sara’s life.
And the life of Sarah was a hundred years and twenty years [(Just as she had not sinned by twenty, sin liability not obtaining until that age, so she had not sinned by one hundred)], and seven years [(She was as beautiful at twenty as she was at seven)], the years of the life of Sarah [All were uniform in goodness.]
Sarah died in Kiryas Arba, which is Chevron, in the land of Canaan. Avraham came to eulogize Sarah and to weep for her.
And Sara died in Qiryat-arba; that is Ḥevron, in the land of Kena῾an: and Avraham came to mourn for Sara, and to weep for her.
And Sarah died in Kiryath Arbah [("the city of the four" — so called either because of the four giants who lived there, or because of the four pairs who are buried there — Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rivkah, Jacob and Leah)], which is Chevron, in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came [from Beersheva] to eulogize Sarah and to bewail her.
Avraham rose from the presence of his dead, and spoke to the sons of Cheis saying,
And Avraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Ḥet, saying,
And Abraham arose from before his dead one, and he spoke to the sons of Cheth, saying:
I am a foreigner and a resident among you. Grant me the possession of a grave site with you, so that I may bury my dead from my presence.
I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
A stranger [from a different land] and a dweller am I with you. Give me a (land) holding for a burial plot with you so that I may bury my dead one from before me.
The sons of Cheis replied to Avraham saying to him,
And the children of Ḥet answered Avraham, saying to him,
And the sons of Cheth answered Abraham, saying to him:
Hear us my master, you are a prince of God in our midst. Bury your dead in the choicest of our grave sites. No man among us will deny his grave site from you to bury your dead.
Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall with- hold from thee his tomb, but that thou mayst bury thy dead.
Hear us, my lord, you are a prince of G-d in our midst. In the choicest of our plots bury your dead one; none of us will hold back his plot from you from burying your dead one.
Avraham rose and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Cheis.
And Avraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Ḥet.
And Abraham arose and he prostrated himself to the people of the land, to the sons of Cheth.
Avraham spoke to them, saying, If it is really your will that I bury my dead from my presence, listen to me and intercede for me with Ephron, son of Tzochar.
And he spoke with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to ῾Efron the son of Żoĥar,
And he spoke to them, saying: If it is your will to bury my dead one from before me, hear me and petition Efron the son of Tzochar for me.
Let him give me the Machpeilah [double] cave, which belongs to him, which is at the end of his field. Let him give [sell] it to me for its full value, as a grave site among you.
that he may give me the cave of Makhpela, which he has, which is in the end of his field; for the full price he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
And let him give me the doubled cave [(so called because it had an upper and a lower story or because it was "doubled with pairs")], which he has, which is at the end of his field. For its full value let him give it (i.e., sell it) to me, in your midst as holding for a burial plot.
Ephron lived in the midst of the sons of Cheis, Ephron the Chitite replied to Avraham in the ears [audience] of the sons of Cheis, for all who came to the city gate, saying,
And ῾Efron dwelt among the children of Ḥet: and ῾Efron the Ḥitti answered Avraham in the hearing of the children of Ḥet, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,
And Efron was sitting in the midst of the sons of Cheth, [having that day been appointed an officer in consideration of Abraham's being beholden to him]. And Efron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Cheth, for all who had come to the gate of his city [(All had left their work to come to pay respect to Sarah)], saying:
No, my master, hear me: I have given you the field, and the cave that is in it, I have [also] given to you. Before the eyes of the sons of my people I have given it to you. Bury your dead.
No, my lord, hear me: the field I give thee, and the cave that is in it, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people I give it thee: bury thy dead.
No, my lord, [do not pay for it], hear me. The field — I have given it to you; and the cave that is in it, to you have I given it. Before the eyes of the sons of my people have I given it to you — bury your dead one.
Avraham bowed to the people of the land.
And Avraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.
And Abraham prostrated himself before the people of the land.
He spoke to Ephron in the ears [audience] of the people of the land saying, If you will only listen to me. I have given the money for the field. Take it from me and I will bury my dead there.
And he spoke to ῾Efron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee the price of the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.
And he spoke to Efron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying: But if you would only hear me. I have set aside the money for the field — take it from me and let me bury my dead one there.
Ephron replied to Avraham, saying to him,
And ῾Efron answered Avraham, saying to him,
And Efron answered Abraham, saying to him:
My master, hear me. A land [worth] four hundred silver shekel—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead.
My lord, hearken to me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that between me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.
My lord, hear me. Land worth four hundred shekels of silver, between [lovers like] you and me, what is it? [Forget about it] and bury your dead one.
Avraham listened to Ephron, and Avraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he spoke of in the hearing of the sons of Cheis, four hundred silver shekel, negotiable currency.
And Avraham hearkened to ῾Efron; and Avraham weighed to ῾Efron the silver, which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Ḥet, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
And Abraham hearkened to Efron, and Abraham weighed out to Efron the silver whereof he had spoken in the ears of the sons of Cheth, four hundred shekels of silver, current with the merchant.
The field of Ephron was established [as Avraham’s possession], [the field] which was in Machpeilah, facing Mamrei; [this included] the field, the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field that were in the entire circumference of its boundaries.
And the field of ῾Efron, which was in Makhpela, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made over
And the field of Efron which was in the Machpelah before Mamre — the field and the cave therein and all the trees in the field in all its boundaries roundabout — was confirmed
This became Avraham’s [possession] through a purchase before the eyes of the sons of Cheis, all who had come to the gate of his city.
to Avraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Ḥet, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
to Abraham as an acquisition before the eyes of the sons of Cheth, before all who entered the gate of his city.
After that Avraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the Machpeilah field, which faces Mamrei, which is Chevron, in the land of Canaan.
And after this, Avraham buried Sara his wife in the cave of the field of Makhpela before Mamre: the same is Ḥevron in the land of Kena῾an.
And after that, Abraham buried Sarah, his wife, in the cave of the field of the Machpelah, before Mamre, which is Chevron in the land of Canaan.
וַיָּ֨קׇם הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה וְהַמְּעָרָ֧ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֛וֹ לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָ֑בֶר מֵאֵ֖ת בְּנֵי־חֵֽת׃{ס}
The field and its cave was established as Avraham’s possession as a gravesite, by the sons of Cheis.
And the field, and the cave that is in it, were made over to Avraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Ḥet.
And the field and the cave therein were confirmed to Abraham as a burial holding from the sons of Cheth.
