It was at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing on the bank of the river.

And it came to pass at the end of two years, that Par῾o dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the River.

And it was at the end of two years that Pharaoh dreamt. And, behold, he was standing by the Nile.

Behold, from the river emerged seven cows, fine-looking and well-fleshed, and they were grazing in the reed grass.

And, behold, there came up out of the River seven cows, well favoured, and fat of flesh; and they fed in the reed grass.

And, behold, from the Nile there came up seven kine of good appearance and fat flesh, and they fed in the reed grass.

And behold, seven other cows emerged after them, from the river, bad-looking and thin-fleshed, and they stood next to the cows that were [already] on the bank of the river.

And, behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the River, ill favoured and lean of flesh; and stood by the other cows upon the brink of the River.

And, behold, seven other kine came up after them from the Nile, of bad appearance and thin flesh. And they stood near the kine on the bank of the Nile.

They ate—the bad looking, thin-fleshed cows [then ate] the seven fine looking, healthy cows, and Pharaoh woke up.

And the ill favoured and leanfleshed cows ate up the seven well favoured and fat cows. So Par῾o awoke.

And the seven kine of bad appearance and of thin flesh ate the seven kine of good appearance and of fat flesh [(signifying the forgetting of the years of plenty in the years of famine)], and Pharaoh awoke.

He fell asleep and had a second dream. Behold, seven ears of grain [corn] came up on a single stalk, wholesome and good.

And he slept and dreamed a second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up on one stalk, plump and good.

And he slept and he dreamed a second time, and, behold, seven ears of corn arose upon one stalk, healthy and good.

And behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, grew up after them.

And, behold, seven ears thin, and blasted by the east wind sprang up after them.

And, behold, seven ears of corn, thin, and beaten by the east wind sprouted after them.

The seven thin ears swallowed the seven wholesome, full ears. Pharaoh woke up, and behold it was a dream.

And the seven thin ears devoured the seven plump and full ears. And Par῾o awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

And the seven thin ears swallowed up the seven healthy, full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a [completed] dream [demanding an interpretation].

In the morning, he was agitated. He sent and summoned all the wizards of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh related his dream to them, but none could interpret them for Pharaoh.

And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Miżrayim, and all her wise men: and Par῾o told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them to Par῾o.

And it was in the morning that his spirit was agitated, and he sent and called all the necromancers of Egypt and all its wise men; and Pharaoh told his dream to them, but none could interpret them to Pharaoh [i.e., to Pharaoh's satisfaction.]

The chief butler spoke to Pharaoh saying, I recall my sins today:

Then spoke the chief butler to Par῾o, saying, I do remember my faults this day:

And the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: I make mention of my faults this day.

Pharaoh was enraged at his servants, and he placed me under guard in the house of the chief executioner; me and the chief baker.

Par῾o was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the officer of the guard’s house, both me and the chief baker:

Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and he placed me in custody in the house of the head of the slaughterers — me and the chief baker.

We had a dream on the same night, I and he, each according to the interpretation of his dream, did we dream.

and we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; each according to [i.e., in consonance with] the [subsequent] interpretation of his dream did we dream.

With us there was a lad, a Hebrew, a slave of the chief of the slaughterers. We told him [about our dreams], and he interpreted our dreams, he interpreted each man’s dream accordingly.

And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the officer of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.

And there was with us a youth [a simpleton], an Ivri, [who does not even know our language], a slave [(unworthy of royal regard)] to the head of the slaughterers, and we told him and he interpreted our dreams; each according to [the nature of] his dream did he interpret.

It came to pass, that as he interpreted for us, so did it occur; he restored me to my position, and him he hanged.

And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; I was restored to my office, and he was hanged.

And it was, [just] as he interpreted it to us did it come to pass. I, he [Pharaoh] restored to my post, and him he hanged.

Pharaoh sent and summoned Yoseif. They hurried him out of the dungeon, but [Yoseif first] shaved and changed his clothes. And then came to Pharaoh.

Then Par῾o sent and called Yosef, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his garments, and came in to Par῾o.

And Pharaoh sent and called (for) Joseph, and they hastened him out of the pit, and he cut his hair [in deference to the king], and he changed his garments, and he came to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh said to Yoseif, I had a dream and there is no one to interpret it. I have heard it said about you that you hear a dream so as to interpret it.

And Par῾o said to Yosef, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph: I dreamed a dream and none can interpret it. And I have heard about you that you understand a dream to interpret it.

Yoseif answered Pharaoh, saying, Not I. God will respond to the peace of Pharaoh.

And Yosef answered Par῾o, saying, it is not me: God shall give Par῾o a favourable answer.

And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying: It [the interpretation of dreams] is not mine; G d will answer [through my mouth] for the peace of Pharaoh.

Pharaoh spoke to Yoseif, In my dream, I was standing on the bank of the river.

And Par῾o said to Yosef, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the River:

And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph: In my dream, behold, I was standing on the bank of the Nile.

Behold from the river there emerged seven cows, well-fleshed and fine looking, and they were grazing in the reed grass.

and, behold, there came up out of the River seven cows, fat of flesh and well favoured; and they fed in the reed grass:

And, behold, from the Nile there came up seven kine of fat flesh and good appearance, and they fed in the reed grass.

And behold seven other cows emerged after them, poor, very bad-looking and thin-fleshed. I never saw in the entire land of Egypt, such bad looking [cows.]

and, behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and lean of flesh, such as I never saw in all the land of Miżrayim for badness:

And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, lean, of very bad appearance and thin-fleshed. I never saw such in all the land of Egypt for badness.

The thin, bad-looking cows, ate the first seven cows, which were the healthy ones.

and the lean and the ill favoured cows did eat up the first seven fat cows:

And the thin, bad kine ate the first fat kine.

They came inside them, but it could not be recognized that they had come inside them, [because] their appearance was as bad as it was previously. Then I woke up.

and when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; for they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

And they came into their midst, but it could not be known that they had come into their midst, for their appearance was bad as in the beginning — and I awoke.

Then I saw in my dream that behold seven ears of grain [corn], wholesome and good, came up on one stalk.

And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up on one stalk, full and good:

And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears of corn came up on one stalk, full and good.

And behold seven ears, shriveled, thin and scorched by the east wind, grew up after them.

and, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted by the east wind, sprang up after them:

And, behold, seven ears of corn, parched thin, beaten by the east wind, sprouted after them.

The thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. I said this to the wizards, but none of them could tell me [its meaning].

and the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this to the magicians; but there was none that could explain it to me.

And the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. And I related this to the magicians, and none could tell me (what it meant).

Yoseif said to Pharaoh, Pharaoh’s dream is one. What God is about to do, He has told to Pharaoh.

And Yosef said to Par῾o, The dream of Par῾o is one: God has declared to Par῾o what he is about to do.

And Joseph said to Pharaoh: The dream of Pharaoh is one. What G d is to do He has told to Pharaoh.

The seven good cows represent seven years, and the seven good ears represent seven years; it is one dream.

The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

The seven good kine are seven years, and the seven good ears are [the same] seven years. It is one dream.

The seven thin, bad [looking] cows who came up after them, represent seven years, and the seven empty, east wind—scorched ears, represent the coming of seven years of famine.

And the seven thin and ill favoured cows that came up after them are seven years: and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

And the seven thin, bad kine that came up after them are seven years. And the seven thin ears beaten by the east wind will be seven years of famine.

This is the word that I have spoken to Pharaoh; what God is about to do, He has revealed to Pharaoh.

This is the thing which I have spoken to Par῾o: What God is about to do He has shown to Par῾o.

This is the thing that I have spoken to Pharaoh. What G d is to do He has shown to Pharaoh.

Behold, seven years are coming during which there will be great abundance in the entire land of Egypt.

Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Miżrayim.

Behold, seven years are coming — great plenty in all the land of Egypt.

Seven years of famine will rise after them, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will devastate the land.

And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Miżrayim; and the famine shall consume the land;

And seven years of famine will arise after them, and all the plenty in the land of Egypt will be forgotten, [thus, the "swallowing" (24)], and the famine will consume the land.

Nor will be known the [former] abundance of the land because of that famine that will follow, for it will be very severe.

and the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous.

And the plenty will not be known in the land because of that famine afterwards [thus, "And it was not noticeable, etc." (21)] because it will be very sore.

As for the dream being repeated twice to Pharaoh, it is because the thing stands ready before God, and God is hurrying to do it.

And as for the repetition of the dream to Par῾o twice; it is because the thing is fast determined by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

And as to the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it is because the thing is readied from G d, and G d is hastening to do it.

Now Pharaoh should seek a man of understanding and wisdom, and place him in charge of the land of Egypt.

Now therefore let Par῾o look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Miżrayim.

And now, let Pharaoh see (to find) an understanding, wise man, and let him place him over the land of Egypt.

This is what Pharaoh should do: appoint officials over the land, and prepare the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.

Let Par῾o do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Miżrayim in the seven years of plenty.

Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers for the land, and let him spur on the (people of) the land of Egypt in the seven years of plenty.

Let them gather in all the food during these good years that are coming, and let them store up grain under the hand [jurisdiction] of Pharaoh. Let the food be [kept] in the cities, and let them safeguard it.

And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Par῾o, and let them keep food in the cities.

And let them gather up all the food of these coming good years, and let them store up grain under the hand of Pharaoh, food in the cities, and let them guard it.

The food will be held in safe-keeping for the land, for the seven years of famine; which will be in the land of Egypt. Let the land not be cut off by the famine.

And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Miżrayim; that the land perish not through the famine.

And the [stored-up] food will be a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will prevail in the land of Egypt, and the land will not be cut off in the famine.

This thing [plan] was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

And the thing was good in the eyes of Par῾o, and in the eyes of all his servants.

And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.

Pharaoh said to his servants, Can [another] one like this be found, a man who has God’s spirit in him?

And Par῾o said to his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom is the spirit of God?

And Pharaoh said to his servants: Can there be found such a one! a man invested with the spirit of G d.

Pharaoh said to Yoseif, After Elohim has informed you of all this, there is no one so understanding and wise as you.

And Par῾o said to Yosef, since God has shown thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

And Pharaoh said to Joseph: Since G d has apprised you of all this, there is none so understanding and wise as you [(Pharaoh's response to 33)].

You shall be over my house, and by your word shall all my people be fed. Only by [virtue of] the throne will I be greater than you.

thou shalt be over my house, and according to thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.

You will be over my house, and by your word shall all my people be fed. Only (in) the throne [i.e., the name of "king"] shall I be greater than you.

Pharaoh said to Yoseif, Behold, I have placed you in charge of the entire land of Egypt.

And Par῾o said to Yosef, See, I have set thee over all the land of Miżrayim.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph: See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.

Pharaoh then took off his ring from his hand, and he placed it on Yoseif’s hand. He dressed him in linen garments, and put a gold chain around his neck.

And Par῾o took off his ring from his hand, and put it on Yosef’s hand, and arrayed him in garments of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

And Pharaoh removed his ring from his hand and placed it on Joseph's hand, [thus making him second to himself], and he robed him in vestments of fine linen, and he placed the golden chain on his neck.

He had him [Yoseif] ride in his second-ranking carriage, and they proclaimed before him, Avreich. He thus placed him over the entire land of Egypt.

and he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Avrekh (Bow the knee): and made him ruler over all the land of Miżrayim.

And he had him ride in the chariot next to his, and they called before him "Avrech!" ["This is the father (i.e., counselor) of the king"], and he set him over all the land of Egypt.

Pharaoh [then] said to Yoseif, I am Pharaoh, but without you, no man will lift his hand or his foot in the entire land of Egypt.

And Par῾o said to Yosef, I am Par῾o, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Miżrayim.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph: I am Pharaoh [and I am empowered to decree], and [I decree that] without your consent no man may lift his hand [to arm himself], or his foot [to mount a horse] in the whole land of Egypt.

Pharaoh gave Yoseif the name Tzafnas Paneiach, and he gave him Osnas, the daughter of Poti Phera, priest of On as a wife. Yoseif [then] went out over the land of Egypt.

And Par῾o called Yosef’s name, Żafenat-pa῾neaĥ; and he gave him to wife Asenat the daughter of Poti-fera priest of On. And Yosef went out over all the land of Miżrayim.

And Pharaoh called Joseph "Tzafnath Pa'aneach" ["the unraveler of the hidden"], and he gave him as a wife Asnath the daughter of Poti Fera, the priest of On, [Pothiphar, called "Poti Fera" because, having designs on Joseph, he was rendered impotent (fera).] And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

Yoseif was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Yoseif left Pharaoh’s presence, and traversed throughout the entire land of Egypt.

And Yosef was thirty years old when he stood before Par῾o, king of Miżrayim. And Yosef went out from the presence of Par῾o, and went through all the land of Miżrayim.

And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from before Pharaoh, and he passed through all the land of Egypt.

The earth produced during the seven years of abundance by handfuls.

And in the seven years of plenty the earth brought forth by heaps.

And the land was made in the seven years of plenty into fistfuls [i.e., the inhabitants gathered grain, fist upon fist, for storage].

He gathered in all the food of the seven years [that was produced] in the land of Egypt, and placed the food in the cities. The food of the fields surrounding each city was placed within [the city].

And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Miżrayim, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up within it.

And he gathered all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and he placed food in the cities. The food [i.e., the soil] of the field of the city which was around it, he placed in it [into the gathered food, to preserve it, (food being best preserved by local soil)].

Yoseif piled up grain like the sand of the sea—in great abundance, until that they gave up counting it, because there were no [more] numbers.

And Yosef gathered corn like the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped numbering; for it was without number.

And Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, in great quantity, until he [the counter] stopped counting, for there was no count.

Two sons were born to Yoseif before the years of famine came. They were born to him by Osnas, the daughter of Poti Phera, Priest of On.

And to Yosef were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenat the daughter of Poti-fera priest of On bore to him.

And unto Joseph were born two sons before the advent of the years of famine [(whence we derive that it is forbidden to cohabit in years of famine)], which were begotten to him by Asnath the daughter of Poti Fera, the priest of On.

Yoseif named the first-born, Menasheh, For God has made me forget all my trouble, and all that was in my father’s house.

And Yosef called the name of the firstborn Menashshe: For God, said he, has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.

And Joseph called the name of the first-born Menasheh: "for G d has made me forget (nashani) all of my toil and all of my father's house."

He named the second one Ephraim, Because Elohim has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.

And the name of the second he called Efrayim: For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

And the name of the second he called Ephraim: "for G d has made me fruitful (hifrani) in the land of my affliction."

The seven years of abundance came to an end, [the good years] that were in the land of Egypt.

And the seven years of plenty, that were in the land of Miżrayim, were ended.

And there ended the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt.

The seven years of famine started to come, just as Yoseif had said. There was famine in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Yosef had said: and the famine was in all the lands; but in all the land of Miżrayim there was bread.

And the seven years of famine began to arrive, as Joseph had said. And there was famine in all of the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all of Egypt, Go to Yoseif. Whatever he says to you, do.

And when all the land of Miżrayim was famished, the people cried to Par῾o for bread: and Par῾o said to all Miżrayim, Go to Yosef; what he says to you, do.

And the whole land of Egypt hungered. And the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all of Egypt: Go to Joseph. Whatever he tells you, do.

The famine spread over the entire face of the land. Yoseif opened everything that held grain, and sold [grain] to the Egyptians. The famine became severe in the land of Egypt.

And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Yosef opened all the storehouses, and sold to Miżrayim; and the famine grew severe in the land of Miżrayim.

And the famine was on the "face of all the land" [i.e., the rich], and Joseph opened all (the granaries) where there was (grain), and he sold to Egypt; and the famine waxed strong in the land of Egypt.

All [countries] of the land came to Egypt to buy [grain] from Yoseif, for the famine was severe in all the land.

And all countries came to Miżrayim to Yosef to buy corn; because the famine was so severe in all the earth.

And all the land came to Egypt to Joseph to buy, for the famine was strong in all the land.
