Yoseif came and told Pharaoh, and he said, My father, and my brothers, their sheep, their cattle, and all their possessions, have come from the land of Canaan, and they are now in the land of Goshen.

Then Yosef came and told Par῾o, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Kena῾an; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

And Joseph came and told it to Pharaoh, and he said: My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that is theirs have come from the land of Canaan, and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

From among his brothers, he took five men, and he presented them to Pharaoh.

And he took some of his brothers, five men, and presented them to Par῾o.

And from the "edge" of his brothers, [the least vigorous (so that Pharaoh not impress them into military service)], he took five men, and he presented them to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh said to his brothers, What is your occupation? They said to Pharaoh, Your servants are shepherds, we and our fathers.

And Par῾o said to his brothers, What is your occupation? And they said to Par῾o, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.

And Pharaoh said to his brothers: What is your occupation? And they said to Pharaoh: Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers.

They said to Pharaoh, We have come to live in the land temporarily, since there is no pasture for your servant’s flocks, because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now then, please let your servants settle in the land of Goshen.

They said moreover to Par῾o, To sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is severe in the land of Kena῾an: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

And they said to Pharaoh: To sojourn in the land did we come. For there is no pasture for your servants' flocks. For the famine is sore in the land of Canaan. And now, let your servants abide in the land of Goshen.

Pharaoh said to Yoseif, Your father and your brothers have come to you.

And Par῾o spoke to Yosef, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come to thee:

And Pharaoh said to Joseph: Your father and your brothers have come to you.

The land of Egypt is before you. In the best of the land, settle your father and your brothers. Let them settle in the land of Goshen. If you know of capable men among them, appoint them livestock officers over my [herds.]

the land of Miżrayim is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowst any able men among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

The land of Egypt is before you. In the best of the land settle your father and your brothers. Let them live in the land of Goshen. And if you know of any experts among them [in shepherding], appoint them overseers over mine [i.e., my sheep].

Yoseif [then] brought in Yaakov, his father, and presented him to Pharaoh; and Yaakov blessed Pharaoh.

And Yosef brought in Ya῾aqov his father, and set him before Par῾o: and Ya῾aqov blessed Par῾o.

And Joseph brought Jacob his father and presented him to Pharaoh, and Jacob gave Pharaoh salutation.

Pharaoh said to Yaakov, How many are the years of your life?

And Par῾o said to Ya῾aqov, How old art thou?

And Pharaoh said to Jacob: How many are the days of the years of your life?

Yaakov said to Pharaoh, The years of my temporary residence are one hundred and thirty years. Few and troublesome have been the days of my life. I have not attained the years of my father’s lives, in the days of their temporary residence.

And Ya῾aqov said to Par῾o, The days of the years of my sojournings are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.

And Jacob said to Pharaoh: The days of the years of my sojournings are a hundred and thirty years. Few and troubled have been the days of the years of my life, and they did not attain [in good] to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.

Yaakov blessed Pharaoh, and left Pharaoh’s presence.

And Ya῾aqov blessed Par῾o, and went out from before Par῾o.

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh [in leave-taking], and he left Pharaoh's presence.

Yoseif settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the land of Ramseis, as Pharaoh had ordered.

And Yosef provided abodes for his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Miżrayim, in the best of the land, in the land of Ra῾meses, as Par῾o had commanded.

And Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and he gave them a holding in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Ramses [in Goshen], as Pharaoh had commanded.

Yoseif provided his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with bread according to [the needs of] the children.

And Yosef nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father’s household, with bread, according to their little ones.

And Joseph fed his father and his brothers and all of his father's household bread [sufficient for all, even] for the little ones [to "finger"].

There was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt, and Canaan were worn out because of the famine.

And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Miżrayim and all the land of Kena῾an languished by reason of the famine.

And [(a reversion to the beginning of the years of famine)] there was no bread in all the land, for the famine was extremely severe, and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished in the famine.

Yoseif gathered up all the money that was to be found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, through the purchases they made. Yoseif brought the money to the house of Pharaoh.

And Yosef gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Miżrayim, and in the land of Kena῾an, for the corn which they bought: and Yosef brought the money to Par῾o’s house.

And Joseph gathered all the money found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan [which they had given him] for the grain that they had purchased, and Joseph brought the money to the house of Pharaoh.

When the money was used up in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all [the people of] Egypt came to Yoseif, saying, Give us bread; why should we die in your presence, [just] because there is no money?

And when money failed in the land of Miżrayim, and in the land of Kena῾an, all Miżrayim came to Yosef, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money fails.

And the money was exhausted in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan. And all of Egypt came to Joseph, saying: Give us bread. Why should we die before you? For the money is at an end.

Yoseif said, Bring your livestock, and I will give you [food] [in exchange] for your livestock if there is no more money.

And Yosef said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

And Joseph said: Bring your kine and I will give (it) to you for your kine if the money is at an end.

They brought their livestock to Yoseif, and Yoseif gave them bread [in exchange] for their horses, their flocks of sheep, their herds of cattle and their donkeys. He tended them with bread in exchange for all their livestock, in that year.

And they brought their cattle to Yosef; and Yosef gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year.

And they brought their kine to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses and for the flocks of sheep and for the herds of cattle and the asses. And he led them with bread for all of their kine in that year.

That year came to an end. They came to him in the second year, and they said to him, We are holding nothing back from my master, for the money is used up, and the herds of cattle belong to my master. There is nothing left before my master except our bodies and our land.

When that year was ended, they came to him in the second year, and said to him, We will not hide from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also has our herds of cattle; there is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:

And that year ended and they came to him in the second year [of the years of famine] and they said to him: We will not conceal it from my lord that the money and the kine are gone [and that all has come] to [the hand of] my lord. Nothing remains before my lord if not our bodies and our ground.

Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land [in exchange] for bread. We and our land will become slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed grain, let us live and not die, and let the land not become desolate.

why shall we die before thy eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Par῾o: and give us grain, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.

Why should we perish before your eyes, both we and our ground? Buy us and our ground for bread, and we and our ground will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed so that we will live and not die, and the ground will not be desolate. [(Even though Joseph said (45:6): "And five years are yet to come in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest," once Jacob came to Egypt, "blessing came at his heels," they began to sow and the famine ended.)]

Yoseif bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s [property.]

And Yosef bought all the land of Miżrayim for Par῾o; for Miżrayim sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Par῾o’s.

And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. For every man in Egypt sold his field; for the famine intensified over them. And the land became Pharaoh's possession.

He [Yoseif] then transferred the people to cities, from one end of the border of Egypt to the other.

And as for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of the borders of Miżrayim, to the other end.

And he [Joseph] transferred the people to cities [from one city to another as a sign that they no longer had a holding in the land, (Joseph intending in this that his brothers not be branded as "exiles.")] from one end of the border of Egypt to the other.

But the land of the priests he did not buy, because the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh. They ate the allotment that Pharaoh gave them, and therefore they did not sell their land.

Only the land of the priests he bought not; for the priests had a portion assigned them by Par῾o, and did eat their portion which Par῾o gave them: therefore they sold not their lands.

Only the land of the priests he did not buy. For the priests had a dole from Pharaoh, and they ate their dole which Pharaoh had given them, wherefore they did not sell their land.

Yoseif said to the people, Behold, I have today purchased you and your lands for Pharaoh. Here is seed, plant [it in] the soil.

Then Yosef said to the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Par῾o: lo, here is grain for you, and you shall sow the land.

And Joseph said to the people: Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you and sow the ground.

When it produces you must give a fifth to Pharaoh. Four parts shall be yours for seed for your fields and for your food, and for those of your households, and for food for your little ones.

And it shall come to pass at harvest times, that you shall give the fifth part to Par῾o, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

And it shall be in the ingathering that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own for seed for the field [each year] and for your food and [as food] for those in your houses [manservants and maidservants] and as food for your little ones.

They said, You have saved our lives. May we find favor in the eyes of my master, and we will be slaves to Pharaoh.

And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find favour in the sight of my lord, and we will be Par῾o’s servants.

And they said: You have kept us alive. May we find favor in the eyes of my lord [to do with us as you said] and we will be servants to Pharaoh [to pay him the yearly tribute].

Yoseif enacted a statute over the land of Egypt to this day, that a fifth belongs to Pharaoh. Except the land of the priests alone, did not belong to Pharaoh.

And Yosef made it a law over the land of Miżrayim to this day, that Par῾o should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests only, which became not Par῾o’s.

And Joseph made it a statute [without repeal] until this day over the land of Egypt that a fifth of it reverted to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests alone did not revert to Pharaoh.

Yisrael lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen. They acquired property there. They were fruitful and [their population] increased greatly.

And Yisra᾽el dwelt in the land of Miżrayim in the country of Goshen; and they took possession of it, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.

And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen, and they had a holding in it, and they were fruitful and they multiplied exceedingly.

Yaakov lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. The days of Yaakov, the years of his life were one hundred and forty seven years.

And Ya῾aqov lived in the land of Miżrayim seventeen years: so the whole age of Ya῾aqov was a hundred and forty seven years.

And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. And the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred and forty-seven years.

The days of Yisrael’s death drew near, and he called for his son Yoseif, and said to him, If I have found favor in your eyes, please, place your hand under my thigh; that you will deal kindly and truthfully with me. Please, do not bury me in Egypt.

And the time drew near for Yisra᾽el to die: and he called his son Yosef, and said to him, If now I have found favour in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Miżrayim:

And the days of Israel "drew near to die" [(This phrase always connotes not attaining to the age of one's father. Isaac lived 180 years, and Jacob, 147)]. And he called to his son, to Joseph, [who was in a position to carry out what he asked] and he said to him: If I have now found favor in your eyes, place your hand under my thigh [and swear] that you will do with me lovingkindness and truth. [(The lovingkindness one does with the dead is one of "truth" in that there is no expectation of reciprocation.)] Do not bury me in Egypt.

For I will lie with my fathers. Carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their grave. He [Yoseif said], I will do as you say.

but I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Miżrayim, and bury me in their buryingplace.

And I will lie [i.e., expire] with my fathers, and you shall carry me from Egypt and bury me in their burial place. And he said: I shall do as you say.

He [Yaakov] said, Swear to me, and he swore to him. Yisrael prostrated himself at the head of the bed.

And he said, I will do as thou hast said. And he said, Swear to me. And he swore to him. And Yisra᾽el bowed himself upon the bed’s head.

And he said: Swear to me. And he swore to him. And Israel bowed [("In the fox's time (of authority; here, an allusion to Joseph's rule), bow down to him.")] towards the head of the bed [i.e., towards the Shechinah, which rests above the head of the sick.]
