"They stood and separated from the Torah" — According to the straightforward reading, it sounds like they separated from the entirety of the Torah. However, throughout the Talmud, it appears that they upheld the Written Torah, so their separation was only from the Oral Torah. Nevertheless, it is still called a separation from "the Torah" as a whole, since it is impossible to fulfil the Written Torah without the tradition of the sages.
