Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Natan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in a house of cedar wood, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord remains under curtains.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

[viz. II Samuel 7] And it was, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet: Behold, I dwell in a house of cedars, and the ark of the L-rd under curtains [of the tent]!

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר נָתָן֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔יד כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּֽלְבָבְךָ֖ עֲשֵׂ֑ה כִּ֥י הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים עִמָּֽךְ׃{ס}

Then Natan said to David, Do all that is in thy heart; for God is with thee.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And Nathan said to David: All that is in your heart, go and do, for G-d is with you.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Natan, saying,

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And it was in that night that the word of G-d came to Nathan, saying:

Go and tell David my servant, Thus says the Lord, Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in:

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Go and say to David, My servant: Thus has the L-rd said: You will not build Me a house to dwell in.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Yisra᾽el to this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

For I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up the children of Israel [from Egypt] until this day, and I was [i.e., went] from tent to tent and from tabernacle [to tabernacle].

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Everywhere where I have walked among all Yisra᾽el, did I speak a word to any of the judges of Yisra᾽el whom I commanded to be shepherds to my people, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar wood?

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Wherever I walked with all [the children of] Israel, did I ever speak this thing with any of the tribes [i.e., judges] of Israel whom I commanded to graze My people, saying: Why did you not build for Me a house of cedars?

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Now therefore thus shalt thou say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the pasture, from following the sheep, that thou shouldst be ruler over my people Yisra᾽el:

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And now, thus shall you say to My servant David: Thus said the L-rd of hosts: I took you from the sheep-cote, from following the sheep, to be a leader over My people Israel.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and I have been with thee wherever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thy enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men who are on the earth.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And I was with you wherever you went, and I cut off all your foes before you, [(wherefore [as per Deuteronomy 12:10] it entered your mind to build Me a temple)], and I made you a [great] name [i.e., "the Shield of David"], like the name of the great ones in the land [i.e., "the Shield of Avraham"].

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And I will ordain a place for my people Yisra᾽el, and I will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; nor shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

[(But I desire even more peace before the Temple is built.)] I shall make a place for My people Israel, and I shall plant it. And it [Israel] shall dwell in its place and be vexed no more. And wicked men will no more afflict them as at first [(before the establishment of the judges)]

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and ever since the time when I commanded judges to be over my people Yisra᾽el. And I will subdue all thy enemies. Moreover I declare to thee that the Lord will build thee a house.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

and [(as they have been afflicting them)] from the days that I ordained judges over My people Israel. And I will humble all of your foes. And I tell you that the L-rd will build a house for you.

And it shall come to pass, when thy days are fulfilled when thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, who shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And it will be, when your days have been filled to go with your fathers, and I raise up your seed after you, who will be of your sons, and I establish his kingdom —

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

he will build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.

I will be his father, and he will be my son: and I will not take my steadfast love away from him, as I took it from the one who was before thee:

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

I will be a Father to him and he will be a son to Me. And I will not remove My lovingkindness from him, as I removed it from [Saul] who was before you.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And I will plant him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, did Natan speak to David.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

According to all of these words and according to all of this vision did Nathan speak with David.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And David the king came and sat before the Lord, and said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that Thou hast brought me so far?

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And King David came and he sat before the L-rd [i.e., before the ark], and he said: Who am I, O L-rd, and who [are those of] my house that You have brought me thus far [i.e., to kingdom]?

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And as though this was too little in Thy eyes, O God, Thou hast also spoken of Thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me as a man of high degree, O Lord God.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if this were too little in Your eyes, O G-d, You have [also] spoken of the house of Your servant from afar [i.e., to enthrone my son after me]. And You have seen me as a man of high degree, O L-rd G-d.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

What more can David say to Thee concerning the honour done to Thy servant? for Thou knowst Thy servant.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

What more can David [speak] to You [i.e., What more can I ask] whereby You can honor Your servant, when You know Your servant [i.e., when You know my needs and have filled all of them]?

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

O Lord, for Thy servant’s sake, and according to Thy own heart, hast Thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

O L-rd, for the sake of Your servant and for [the doing of] Your will [(and not for my worthiness)] have You wrought all of this greatness, to apprise [Your servant] of all of these great things.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

O Lord, there is none like Thee, nor is there any God besides Thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

O L-rd, there is none like You and there is no god beside You, as all that we have heard with our ears.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And who is like Thy people Yisra᾽el, a singular nation on the earth, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make Thee a name of greatness and awesomeness, by driving out nations from before Thy people, whom Thou didst redeem out of Miżrayim?

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And who is like Your people Israel, one nation in the land, before whom G-d walked to redeem (them) for Himself as a people, to make for Yourself a name of grandeurs and awesomenesses, to drive from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt — nations.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

For Thy people Yisra᾽el didst Thou make Thy own people forever; and Thou, Lord, didst become their God.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And You established Your people Israel for Yourself as a people forever. And You, O L-rd, were a G-d for them.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Therefore now, Lord, let the thing that Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as Thou hast said,

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And now, O L-rd G-d, the thing that You spoke for Your servant and for his house, establish (it) forever. And do as You have spoken.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

So let it be established, that Thy name may be magnified forever, saying, The Lord of hosts, the God of Yisra᾽el, is a God to Yisra᾽el: and let the house of David Thy servant be established before Thee.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And let Your name be established and exalted forever, [(men)] saying: The L-rd of hosts, the G-d of Israel, is G-d to Israel, and may the house of David Your servant be established before You.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

For Thou, O my God, hast told Thy servant that Thou wilt build him a house: therefore Thy servant has found in his heart to pray before Thee.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

For You, my G-d, have revealed to Your servant's ear that You would build him a house. Therefore, Your servant found [it in his heart] to pray before You.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And now, Lord, Thou art God, and hast promised this goodness to Thy servant:

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And now, O L-rd, You are G-d [(the Ruler, and You have the power to fulfill)], and You have spoken this good to Your servant.

וְעַתָּ֗ה הוֹאַ֙לְתָּ֙ לְבָרֵךְ֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית עַבְדְּךָ֔ לִֽהְי֥וֹת לְעוֹלָ֖ם לְפָנֶ֑יךָ כִּֽי־אַתָּ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ בֵּרַ֔כְתָּ וּמְבֹרָ֖ךְ לְעוֹלָֽם׃{פ}

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and now it has pleased Thee to bless the house of Thy servant, that it may be before Thee forever: for Thou, O Lord, hast blessed it, and it shall be blessed forever.

The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And now, deign to bless Your servant's house to be forever before You. For You, O L-rd, have blessed, and [it will be] blessed forever.
