And an adversary angel stood up against Yisra᾽el, and provoked David to number Yisra᾽el.
[viz. II Samuel 24] And Satan rose against Israel and incited David to count Israel.
And David said to Yo᾽av and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Yisra᾽el from Be᾽er-sheva to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
And David said to Yoav and to the officers of the people: Go and count Israel from Beersheva until Dan that I may know their number.
And Yo᾽av answered, The Lord make his people a hundred times so many more as they are: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then does my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Yisra᾽el?
And Yoav said: May the L-rd add to His people, like them, one hundred times. Are they not, my lord the king, all servants of my lord? Why does my lord desire this [(to number the people)], for the guilt of Israel?
But the king’s word prevailed against Yo᾽av. So Yo᾽av departed, and went throughout all Yisra᾽el, and came to Yerushalayim.
But the word of the king prevailed against Yoav. And Yoav went, and he traversed all of Israel, and he came to Jerusalem.
And Yo᾽av gave the sum of the number of the people to David. In all Yisra᾽el there were one million one hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Yehuda was four hundred and seventy thousand men that drew sword.
And Yoav gave the count of the people to the king. And all of Israel were a thousand thousands and one hundred thousand men that drew the sword; and Judah, five hundred thousand men that drew the sword.
But he did not count Levi and Binyamin among them: for the king’s word was abhorrent to Yo᾽av.
And Levi and Benjamin he did not count among them, for the word of the king [(to count the people)] was repugnant to Yoav.
וַיֵּ֙רַע֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים עַל־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיַּ֖ךְ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{ס}
And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Yisra᾽el.
And this thing [(the count)] was evil in the eyes of the L-rd, and He smote Israel.
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִיד֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים חָטָ֣אתִֽי מְאֹ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְעַתָּ֗ה הַֽעֲבֶר־נָא֙ אֶת־עֲו֣וֹן עַבְדְּךָ֔ כִּ֥י נִסְכַּ֖לְתִּי מְאֹֽד׃{פ}
And David said to God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I pray thee, take away the iniquity of Thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
And David said to G-d: I have sinned greatly in having done this thing. And now, remove, I pray You, the sin of Your servant, for I have been very foolish.
And the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
And the L-rd spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying:
Go and tell David, saying, Thus says the Lord, I offer thee three things: choose one of them, that I may do it to thee.
Go and speak to David: Thus has the L-rd said: I give you three [choices (corresponding to those you "gave" Saul [viz. I Samuel 26:10])]. Pick one of them and I will do it to you.
So Gad came to David, and said to him, Thus say the Lord, Choose,
And Gad came to David and said to him: Thus has the L-rd said; take it upon you:
אִם־שָׁל֨וֹשׁ שָׁנִ֜ים רָעָ֗ב וְאִם־שְׁלֹשָׁ֨ה חֳדָשִׁ֜ים נִסְפֶּ֥ה מִפְּנֵֽי־צָרֶ֘יךָ֮ וְחֶ֣רֶב אוֹיְבֶ֣יךָ׀לְמַשֶּׂ֒גֶת֒ וְאִם־שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָ֠מִ֠ים חֶ֣רֶב יְהֹוָ֤ה וְדֶ֙בֶר֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהֹוָ֔ה מַשְׁחִ֖ית בְּכׇל־גְּב֣וּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעַתָּ֣ה רְאֵ֔ה מָה־אָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־שֹׁלְחִ֖י דָּבָֽר׃{ס}
either three years famine; or three months to be driven away before thy foes, while the sword of thy enemies overtakes thee; or else three days of the Lord’s sword, namely, pestilence in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the border of Yisra᾽el. Now therefore consider what word I shall bring back to him who sent me.
Either three years of famine, or three months in which you perish at the hand of your foes, the sword of your foes overtaking (you), or three days of the sword of the L-rd, pestilence in the land, and the angel of the L-rd destroying in all the border of Israel. And now, see, what answer shall I return to my Sender?
And David said to Gad, I am in great distress: let me fall rather into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
And David said to Gad: I am sorely oppressed. Let me fall now into the hand of the L-rd [(i.e., pestilence, which is entirely in the hand of the L-rd, but not sword or famine, which, to a certain extent, is mediated by man)], for His mercies are very many, but let me not fall into the hand of man.
So the Lord sent a plague upon Yisra᾽el: and there fell of Yisra᾽el seventy thousand men.
And the L-rd sent a pestilence upon Israel. And there died of Israel seventy thousand men.
וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ הָאֱלֹהִ֨ים׀מַלְאָ֥ךְ׀לִֽירוּשָׁלַ֘͏ִם֮ לְהַשְׁחִיתָהּ֒ וּכְהַשְׁחִ֗ית רָאָ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם עַל־הָרָעָ֔ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לַמַּלְאָ֤ךְ הַמַּשְׁחִית֙ רַ֔ב עַתָּ֖ה הֶ֣רֶף יָדֶ֑ךָ וּמַלְאַ֤ךְ יְהֹוָה֙ עֹמֵ֔ד עִם־גֹּ֖רֶן אׇרְנָ֥ן הַיְבוּסִֽי׃{ס}
And God sent an angel to Yerushalayim to destroy it: and as he was about to destroy, the Lord beheld, and he relented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusite.
And G-d sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. And, as he destroyed, the L-rd saw and He bethought Himself of the evil. And He said to the angel devastating the people: "Enough! Now stay your hand!" And the angel of the L-rd was standing by the threshing floor of Arnan the Yevusite.
And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord standing between the earth and the heaven, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Yerushalayim. Then David and the elders, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
And David lifted his eyes, and he saw the angel of the L-rd standing between earth and heaven with his sword drawn in his hand, stretched over Jerusalem. And David and the elders fell, covered with sackcloth, on their faces.
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֣יד אֶֽל־הָאֱלֹהִ֡ים הֲלֹא֩ אֲנִ֨י אָמַ֜רְתִּי לִמְנ֣וֹת בָּעָ֗ם וַאֲנִי־ה֤וּא אֲשֶׁר־חָטָ֙אתִי֙ וְהָרֵ֣עַ הֲרֵע֔וֹתִי וְאֵ֥לֶּה הַצֹּ֖אן מֶ֣ה עָשׂ֑וּ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהַ֗י תְּהִ֨י נָ֤א יָֽדְךָ֙ בִּ֚י וּבְבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔י וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ לֹ֥א לְמַגֵּפָֽה׃{ס}
And David said to God, Is it not I who commanded the people to be numbered? so that it is I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let Thy hand, I pray Thee, O Lord my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on Thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to G-d: Was it not I who said to count the people? It is I, then, who have sinned and who have done the evil. And these sheep, what did they do? Let Your hand be against me and against my father's house, but not against Your people, for plague!
Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusite.
And an angel of the L-rd said to Gad to tell David that David should go up to erect an altar to the L-rd in the threshing floor of Arnan the Yevusite.
And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the Lord.
And David went up by the word of Gad that he had spoken in the name of the L-rd.
And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
And Arnan returned, and he saw the angel. And his four sons, with him, hid themselves. (And Arnan had been threshing wheat.)
And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
And David came towards Arnan. And Arnan looked and he saw David. And he went out from the threshing floor and he bowed down to David with his face to the ground.
Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar on it to the Lord: thou shalt give it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
And David said to Arnan: Give me the place of the threshing floor, and I will build in it an altar to the L-rd. Give it to me for its full price, and the plague will cease from the people.
And Ornan said to David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering; I give it all.
And Arnan said to David: Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do what is good in his eyes. See, I have given the oxen for burnt-offerings and the threshing tools for [fire-] wood, and the wheat for the meal-offering. I have given all.
And king David said to Ornan, No; but I will surely buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without payment.
And King David said to Arnan: No, but I will buy (it from you) at full price. For I will not take what is yours for the L-rd and offer up a burnt-offering for nothing.
So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
And David gave to Arnan for the place shekels of gold, six hundred by weight.
וַיִּ֩בֶן֩ שָׁ֨ם דָּוִ֤יד מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה וַיַּ֥עַל עֹל֖וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֑ים וַיִּקְרָא֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֤הוּ בָאֵשׁ֙ מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם עַ֖ל מִזְבַּ֥ח הָעֹלָֽה׃{ס}
And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the Lord; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.
And David built there an altar to the L-rd, and he offered up burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. And he called to the L-rd, and He answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of the burnt-offering.
And the Lord commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into its sheath.
And the L-rd spoke to the angel, and he returned his sword to its sheath.
At that time when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusite, then he sacrificed there.
At that time, when David saw that the L-rd had answered him in the threshing floor of Arnan the Yevusite, he sacrificed (i.e., he continued to sacrifice) there.
But the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moshe made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Giv῾on.
And the tabernacle of the L-rd, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of the burnt-offering, at that time, were at the high place in Giveon.
וְלֹא־יָכֹ֥ל דָּוִ֛יד לָלֶ֥כֶת לְפָנָ֖יו לִדְרֹ֣שׁ אֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּ֣י נִבְעַ֔ת מִפְּנֵ֕י חֶ֖רֶב מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהֹוָֽה׃{ס}
And David could not go before it to inquire of God: for he was terrified because of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
But David could not go before it to solicit G-d, for he feared the sword of the angel of the L-rd.
