At that time the Philistines gathered their camps into an army, to wage war against Yisroel. Achish said to Dovid, "You surely know that you will go out with me in the camp—you and your men."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־אָכִ֔ישׁ לָכֵן֙ אַתָּ֣ה תֵדַ֔ע אֵ֥ת אֲשֶֽׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אָכִישׁ֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד לָכֵ֗ן שֹׁמֵ֧ר לְרֹאשִׁ֛י אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֖ כׇּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃{פ}

Dovid replied to Achish, "Therefore you will know what your servant will do." Achish then said to Dovid, "Therefore as my bodyguard—I shall appoint you, permanently."

Shmuel had died and all Yisroel mourned him and buried him in Romoh, in his city. Shaul had banished the Ovos and the Yidonim diviners from the land.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Philistines gathered and they came and camped in Shunem; Shaul gathered all of Yisroel and they camped in Gilbo'a.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

When Shaul saw the Philistine camp he became fearful and his heart trembled greatly.

Shaul inquired of Adonoy, but Adonoy did not answer him; neither through dreams, nor through the Urim, nor through the prophets.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Shaul said to his servants, "Seek out a medium of an Ov, and I will go to her and inquire of her." His servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman who is an Ov medium in Ein Dor."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Shaul disguised himself and changed his clothing; he went together with two men. They came to the woman at night, and he said to her, "Please conjure an Ov for me, and bring up for me whomever I tell you."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The woman said to him, "Behold, you know what Shaul did, that he has eliminated the Ovos and Yidonim from the land. Why then do you seek to entrap me, to have me killed?"

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Shaul then swore to her by Adonoy, saying, "As Adonoy lives, no punishment shall befall you because of this thing."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The woman asked, "Whom shall I conjure up for you?" And he said, "Bring Shmuel up for me."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

When the woman saw Shmuel, she screamed loudly. The woman said to Shaul saying, "Why did you deceive me? For you are Shaul!"

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The king said to her, "Fear not. What did you see?" The woman said to Shaul, "I saw a godly man rising from the earth."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהּ֙ מַֽה־תׇּאֳר֔וֹ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אִ֤ישׁ זָקֵן֙ עֹלֶ֔ה וְה֥וּא עֹטֶ֖ה מְעִ֑יל וַיֵּ֤דַע שָׁאוּל֙ כִּֽי־שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל ה֔וּא וַיִּקֹּ֥ד אַפַּ֛יִם אַ֖רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ׃{ס}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He said to her, "What does he look like?" She said, "An old man is rising, and he is garbed in a robe." Shaul knew that it was Shmuel, and he bowed with his face towards the ground and prostrated himself.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל לָ֥מָּה הִרְגַּזְתַּ֖נִי לְהַעֲל֣וֹת אֹתִ֑י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁ֠א֠וּל צַר־לִ֨י מְאֹ֜ד וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֣ים**׀** נִלְחָמִ֣ים בִּ֗י וֵאלֹהִ֞ים סָ֤ר מֵֽעָלַי֙ וְלֹא־עָנָ֣נִי ע֗וֹד גַּ֤ם בְּיַֽד־הַנְּבִיאִים֙ גַּם־בַּ֣חֲלֹמ֔וֹת וָאֶקְרָאֶ֣ה לְךָ֔ לְהוֹדִיעֵ֖נִי מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶֽׂה׃{ס}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Shmuel said to Shaul, "Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?" Shaul said, "I am in great distress, and the Philistines are at war against me; God has turned away from me and no longer answers me, neither through the prophets nor through dreams. Therefore I called upon you to tell me what to do."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Shmuel said, "But why do you ask me when Adonoy has turned away from you and become your adversary?

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Adonoy has done to him that which He said through me. Adonoy has torn the kingship from your hand and given it to your fellow, to Dovid.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Because you did not obey the word of Adonoy and did not execute His wrath against Amaleik, therefore Adonoy has done this thing to you today.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Adonoy will deliver Yisroel with you into the hand of the Philistines; tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and also, the camp of Yisroel, will Adonoy deliver, into the hand of the Philistines."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Shaul hastened and fell full length to the ground and he greatly feared Shmuel's words; also, he had no strength in him because he had not eaten any food all day and all night.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The woman came to Shaul and saw that he was very terrified, and she said to him, "Behold, your maidservant heeded your voice and I put my life in my hand, and I listened to your words that you spoke to me.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

So now you, too, please listen to the voice of your maidservant. I will put before you a loaf of bread. Eat, so that you will have strength when you go on the way."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

But he refused, and said, "I shall not eat." His servants begged him, and so did the woman, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the bed.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The woman had a fattened calf in her possession; she quickly slaughtered it, and took flour which she kneaded and baked into matzos.

וַתַּגֵּ֧שׁ לִפְנֵי־שָׁא֛וּל וְלִפְנֵ֥י עֲבָדָ֖יו וַיֹּאכֵ֑לוּ וַיָּקֻ֥מוּ וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַהֽוּא׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

She served it to Shaul and to his servants and they ate; and they got up and left that night.
