In the thirty sixth year of the reign of Asa Ba῾asha king of Yisra᾽el came up against Yehuda, and built Rama, so as to prevent anyone from going out or coming in to Asa king of Yehuda.
In the twenty-sixth year of Assa's reign, Basha king of Israel went up against Judah, and he built a high (tower), not allowing exit or entry for Assa king of Judah.
Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben-hadad king of Aram, who dwelt at Darmeseq saying,
And Assa took out silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the L rd and the house of the king, and he sent to Ben Hadad the king of Aram, who sat in Damascus, saying:
There is a league between me and thee, as there was between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent thee silver and gold; go, break thy alliance with Ba῾asha king of Yisra᾽el that he may depart from me.
There is a covenant between me and you and between my father and your father. Behold, I have sent you silver and gold. Go and break your covenant with Basha king of Israel so that he withdraw from me.
And Ben-hadad hearkened to king Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Yisra᾽el; and they smote ῾Iyyon, and Dan, and Avel-mayim, and all the store cities of Naftali.
And Ben Hadad heeded King Assa, and he sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel, and he smote Iyyon and Dan and Avel-mayim, and all the treasure stores of the cities of Naftali.
וַֽיְהִי֙ כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ בַּעְשָׁ֔א וַיֶּחְדַּ֕ל מִבְּנ֖וֹת אֶת־הָרָמָ֑ה וַיַּשְׁבֵּ֖ת אֶת־מְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃{ס}
And it came to pass, when Ba῾asha heard it, that he left off building Rama, and let his work come to a halt.
And it was, when Basha heard, that he ceased building the high (tower) and he stopped his work.
וְאָסָ֣א הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ לָקַח֙ אֶת־כׇּל־יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּשְׂא֞וּ אֶת־אַבְנֵ֤י הָרָמָה֙ וְאֶת־עֵצֶ֔יהָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנָ֖ה בַּעְשָׁ֑א וַיִּ֣בֶן בָּהֶ֔ם אֶת־גֶּ֖בַע וְאֶת־הַמִּצְפָּֽה׃{ס}
Then Asa the king took all Yehuda; and they carried away the stones of Rama, and its timber, with which Ba῾asha was building; and with it he built Geva and Miżpa.
And King Assa took all of Judah and carried the stones of the high (tower) and its wood with which Basha built (it) and built with them Geva and Mitzpah.
And at that time Ḥanani the seer came to Asa king of Yehuda, and said to him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Aram, and not relied on the Lord thy God, therefore the host of the king of Aram has escaped out of thy hand.
And at that time Chanani the seer came to Assa king of Judah and said to him: Because you relied on the king of Aram and did not rely on the L rd your G d, therefore, the army of the king of Aram escaped from your hand.
Were not the Kushim and the Luvim a huge host, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because thou didst rely on the Lord, he delivered them into thy hand.
Were the Cushite and the Luvites not a large host with a great abundance of chariots and riders, and when you relied upon the L rd He delivered them into your hand?
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect towards him. In this thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
For the eyes of the L rd range throughout the land to be strong with those whose hearts are whole with Him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you shall have wars.
Then Asa was angry with the seer, and put him in a prison house: for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people at the same time.
And Assa was angry with the seer and he put him into the prison house, for he seethed against him over this. And Assa crushed some of the people at that time.
And, behold, the acts of Asa, first and last, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Yehuda and Yisra᾽el.
And, behold, the events (of the reign) of Assa, the earlier and the later are recorded in the book [of chronicles] of the kings of Judah and Israel.
And Asa in the thirty ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease became severe: yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians.
And Assa was stricken in the thirty-ninth year of his reign in his legs and (his ailment spread) upwards. And in his sickness, too, he did not seek out the L rd, but the doctors.
And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the forty first year of his reign.
And Assa rested with his fathers, and he died in the forty-first year of his reign.
וַיִּקְבְּרֻ֣הוּ בְקִבְרֹתָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּרָה־לוֹ֮ בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִיד֒ וַיַּשְׁכִּיבֻ֗הוּ בַּמִּשְׁכָּב֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר מִלֵּא֙ בְּשָׂמִ֣ים וּזְנִ֔ים מְרֻקָּחִ֖ים בְּמִרְקַ֣חַת מַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וַיִּשְׂרְפוּ־ל֥וֹ שְׂרֵפָ֖ה גְּדוֹלָ֥ה עַד־לִמְאֹֽד׃{פ}
And they buried him in his own tomb, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him on a bier which was filled with sweet odours and divers kinds of spices prepared by the perfumer’s art: and they made a very great burning for him.
And they buried him in his burial grounds that he had dug for himself in the city of David. And they laid him in a resting place that he had filled with diverse spices compounded by the perfumer's art. And they made for him a very great pyre [(for the burning of his personal effects)].
