After these things and these deeds of integrity, Sanĥeriv king of Ash­shur came, and entered into Yehuda, and encamped against the forti­fied cities, and thought to win them for himself.

[But even] after these things and the truth [(pursued by Chizkiyahu)], Sancheriv king of Ashur came against Judah [(because of their back-sliding)], and he encamped against the fortified cities, and he devised how to breach them for himself.

And when Yeĥizqiyyahu saw that Sanĥeriv was come, and that he intended to fight against Yerushalayim,

And Yechizkiyahu saw that Sancheriv had come and that his face was set for war against Jerusalem.

he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs which were outside the city: and they helped him.

And he took counsel with his officers and his warriors to stop up the waters of the springs outside the city, and they aided him.

So a great many people were gathered together, who stopped up all the springs, and also the wadi that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Ashshur come, and find much water?

And a great throng gathered and stopped up all of the springs and the stream that flowed in the midst of the land [(outside Jerusalem)], saying: Why should the kings of Ashur come and find an abundance of water?

Also he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall outside that, and he strengthened the Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

And he strengthened himself and built the entire breached wall so that it rose above the towers, and outside [this wall he built] another wall, and he strengthened the Millo, the city of David, and he made many swords and shields.

And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the road place at the gate of the city, and spoke encouragement to them saying,

And he appointed military officers over the people, and he gathered them to him to the city square, and he spoke to their hearts, saying:

Be strong and courageous, be not afraid or dismayed on account of the king of Ashshur, or on account of the multitude that is with him: for there are more with us than with him:

Strengthen yourselves and be firm. Do not fear and do not break before the king of Ashur and before all the multitude that is with him, for with us there is more than with him.

with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people took confidence from the words of Yeĥizqiyyahu king of Yehuda.

With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the L rd our G d to aid us and to fight our wars. And the people took support from the words of Yechizkiyahu king of Judah.

After this Sanĥeriv king of Ashshur sent his servants to Yerushalayim, (for he himself laid siege to Lakhish, and all his power with him,) to Yeĥizqiyyahu king of Yehuda, and to all Yehuda who were at Yerushalayim, saying,

After this, Sancherev king of Ashur sent his servants to Jerusalem — (while he was besieging Lachish, and all his officers with him) — to Chizkiyahu king of Judah and to all of Judah in Jerusalem, saying:

Thus says Sanĥeriv king of Ashshur, On what do you trust, that you stand siege in Yerushalayim?

Thus says Sancheriv king of Ashur: In what do you trust, sitting under siege in Jerusalem?

Is not Yeĥizqiyyahu persuading you to give yourselves over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The Lord our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Ashshur?

Is not Chizkiyahu enticing you to deliver you unto death in famine and in thirst, saying: "The L rd our G d will save us from the hand of the king of Ashur"?

Has not the same Yeĥizqiyyahu taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Yehuda and Yerushalayim, saying, You shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?

Did not he, Yechizkiyahu, himself, remove His high places and His altars [(thus limiting His service)] and say to Judah and to Jerusalem: Before one altar [(the Temple altar)] shall you bow down, and upon it shall you burn incense?

Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands in any way able to deliver their lands out of my hand?

Do you not know what I and my fathers did to all the peoples of the lands? Could the gods of the nations of the lands deliver their lands from my hand?

Who among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers destroyed could rescue his people from my hand that G d should be able to rescue you from my hand?

Now therefore let not Ḥizqiyyahu deceive you, or persuade you in this manner, and do not believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?

And now, let Chizkiyahu not deceive you and let him not entice you thus, and do not trust in him. For no god of any nation or kingdom could rescue his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers; how much more so will your G d not rescue you from my hand!

And his servants spoke yet more against the Lord God, and against his servant Yeĥizqiyyahu.

And more [(of the same)] did his servants speak against the L rd G d and against Yechizkiyahu His servant.

He also wrote letters to insult the Lord God of Yisra᾽el, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Yeĥizqiyyahu not deliver his people out of my hand.

And he wrote letters to blaspheme the L rd G d of Israel, saying about Him: "Just as the gods of the nations of the lands, who did not rescue their people from my hand, so will the G d of Yechizkiyahu not rescue his people from my hand."

Then they cried with a loud voice in the language of Yehuda to the people of Yerushalayim who were on the wall, to affright them, and to terrify them; that they might take the city.

And they called out in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall to frighten and confound them in order to take the city [viz. II Kings 19 and Isaiah 37].

And they spoke against the God of Yerushalayim, as against the gods of the peoples of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.

And they spoke of the G d of Jerusalem as they did of the gods of the people of the land, the handiwork of man.

And for this Yeĥizqiyyahu the king, and the prophet Yesha῾yahu the son of Amoż, prayed and cried to heaven.

And King Yechizkiyahu and Isaiah the son of Amotz the prophet prayed over this, and they cried out to Heaven.

And the Lord sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men at arms, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Ashshur. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, his own offspring slew him there with the sword.

And the L rd sent an angel and he wiped out every warrior, leader, and officer in the camp of the king of Ashur, and he returned shamefaced to his land. And he came into the house of his god, and [(two)] of the issue of his loins [i.e., his sons] struck him down there with the sword.

Thus the Lord saved Yeĥizqiyyahu and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim from the hand of Sanĥeriv the king of Ashshur, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.

And the L rd saved Yechizkiyahu and the dwellers of Jerusalem from the hand of Sancheriv king of Ashur and from the hand of all [(their foes)], and He led them [(with compassion)] roundabout.

And many brought tribute to the Lord to Yerushalayim, and presents to Yeĥizqiyyahu king of Yehuda: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

And many brought offerings to the L rd to Jerusalem and precious objects to Yechizkiyahu king of Judah, and he was exalted in the eyes of all the nations afterwards.

In those days Yeĥizqiyyahu fell mortally sick, and he prayed to the Lord: and he spoke to him, and he gave him a sign.

In those days [(three days before the downfall of Sancheriv)] Chizkiyahu took ill unto death, and he prayed to the L rd, and He said to him [(that he would recover)] and He gave him a sign [viz. II Kings 20:8].

But Yeĥiz­qiyyahu did not pay back according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was proud: therefore wrath came upon him, and upon Yehuda and Yerushalayim.

But not as He had bestowed upon him did Yechizkiyahu repay Him, for his heart grew proud, and the wrath [of the L rd] was upon him and (upon) Judah and Jerusalem [viz. II Kings 20:13].

Nevertheless Yeĥizqiyyahu did humble himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, so that the wrath of the Lord did not come upon them in the days of Yeĥizqiyyahu.

And Yechizkiyahu was humbled in the haughtiness of his heart, he and the dwellers of Jerusalem, and the wrath of the L rd did not come upon them in the days of Yechizkiyahu.

And Yeĥizqiyyahu had very much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of choice vessels;

And Yechizkiyahu had very much wealth and honor, and he made himself treasuries for silver and gold and precious stones and spices and shields and all (kinds of) precious vessels.

storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stables for all manner of beasts, and folds for sheep.

And storehouses for corn produce, wine, and oil, and stalls for all kinds of beasts, and (he acquired) flocks for the stalls.

Moreover he provided cities, and possessions of flocks and herds for himself in abundance: for God had given him very great substance.

And he made cities for himself and acquired sheep and cattle in abundance, for G d had given him very much property.

This same Yeĥizqiyyahu also stopped up the upper watercourse of Giĥon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Yeĥizqiyyahu prospered in all his works.

And he, Yechizkiyahu, stopped up the source of the waters of the upper Gichon and led them down on the west of the city of David, and Yechizkiyahu prospered in all of his works.

Howbeit in the matter of the ambassadors of the princes of Bavel, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

And thus, [(just as in most of his enterprises the L rd was with him and prospered him)], in [the incident of the messengers of the officers of Bavel, who were sent to him to make inquiry of the wonder that had transpired in the land [viz. II Kings 12-15], the L rd left him [(to his own resources)] to try him, to know all that was in his heart.

Now the rest of the acts of Yeĥizqiyyahu, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Yesha῾yahu the prophet, the son of Amoż, and in the book of the kings of Yehuda and Yisra᾽el.

And the rest of the account of the reign of Yechizkiyahu and his kindnesses, behold, they are recorded in the prophecy of Isaiah the son of Amotz the prophet in the book of [the chronicles of] the kings of Judah and Israel.

And Yeĥizqiyyahu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David: and all Yehuda and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim did him honour at his death. And Menashshe his son reigned in his stead.

And Yechizkiyahu rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the choicest of the graves of the sons of David. And all of Judah and the dwellers of Judah did him honor in his death, and Menasheh his son reigned in his place.
