בֶּן־שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים יְהוֹאָ֥שׁ בְּמׇלְכֽוֹ׃{פ}
Yehoash was seven years old when he became king.
In the seventh year of Yeihu, Yehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Yerusholayim. His mother’s name was Tzivia from B’eir Sheva.
Yehoash did what was proper in the eyes of Adonoy all his days, as Yehoyoda, the kohein, instructed him.
Except that the individual altars were not removed; the people were still sacrificing and burning incense on [their] individual altars.
And Yehoash said to the kohanim, “All the sacred money that is brought to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, the half-shekel [given by every male over twenty, and] donations representing the value of one’s age, all monies that a person’s heart inspires him to bring to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
יִקְח֤וּ לָהֶם֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים אִ֖ישׁ מֵאֵ֣ת מַכָּר֑וֹ וְהֵ֗ם יְחַזְּקוּ֙ אֶת־בֶּ֣דֶק הַבַּ֔יִת לְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־יִמָּצֵ֥א שָׁ֖ם בָּֽדֶק׃{פ}
Let them take [the money] for themselves— the kohanim— each one from his friend; and they will support the restoration of the Beis [Hamikdosh] wherever the need for restoration is found.”
In the twenty-third year of king Yehoash, the kohanimhad [still] not supported the restoration of the Beis [Hamikdosh].
King Yehoash summoned Yehoyoda the kohein, and the [other] kohanim, and said to them, “Why are you not supporting the restoration of the Beis [Hamikdosh]? And now, do not take the money from your friends [for yourselves], but for the restoration of the Beis [Hamikdosh]— you should give it over
The kohanim agreed not to take money from the people, and not to support [from their own funds] the restoration of the Beis [Hamikdosh].
And Yehoyoda the kohein took one box and bored a hole in its lid; he placed it near the altar to the right, as a person enters the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy. And they put in there— the guards of the threshold— all the money that was brought to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
Whenever they saw that there was much money in the box, the king’s scribe would go up— and the Kohein Gadol— and bag and count the money that was found in the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
They gave the counted money to those who oversaw the work, who were [thus] appointed over the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy. They paid the carpenters and the builders who worked in the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
And [they] also [paid] the masons and the stone cutters, and [also used the money] to buy lumber and quarried stones [that were needed] to restore the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, and for whatever expenditures [were necessary] to restore the Beis [Hamikdosh].
However, there would not be made for the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, silver pitchers, musical instruments, basins, trumpets, or any gold or silver utensils, from the money brought to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
For to those who supervised the work, did they gave it and with it they supported [the restoration of] the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
They did not demand an accounting from the men into whose hands they gave the money to pay those who supervised the work; for they worked on trust.
כֶּ֤סֶף אָשָׁם֙ וְכֶ֣סֶף חַטָּא֔וֹת לֹ֥א יוּבָ֖א בֵּ֣ית יְהֹוָ֑ה לַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים יִהְיֽוּ׃{פ}
Money for guilt-offerings and money for sin-offerings was not brought to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy; it was for the kohanim.
Then Chazoeil king of Arom went up, and fought with Gas and conquered it; then Chazoeil set his face to go up against Yerusholayim.
Yehoash king of Yehudah, took all the sacred things that were sanctified by Yehoshophot, Yehorom and Achazyohu, his forefathers the kings of Yehudah, and his own sacred things, and all the gold that was found in the treasuries of the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy and in the king’s palace; and he sent it to Chazoeil, king of Arom, and he turned back from upon Yerusholayim.
And the rest of Yoash’s events and all that he did, are indeed written in the book of the chronicles of Yehudah’s kings.
His servants rose up and revolted, and they killed Yoash at Beis Millo which leads down to Selo.
וְיוֹזָכָ֣ר בֶּן־שִׁ֠מְעָ֠ת וִיהוֹזָבָ֨ד בֶּן־שֹׁמֵ֤ר׀עֲבָדָיו֙ הִכֻּ֣הוּ וַיָּמֹ֔ת וַֽיִּקְבְּר֥וּ אֹת֛וֹ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֖יו בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֑ד וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ אֲמַצְיָ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃{פ}
Yozochor, son of Shimos, and Yehozovod, son of Shomeir, his servants, struck him and he died. They buried him with his forefathers in the City of Dovid. His son Amatzyoh reigned in his place.
