Yoshiyahu was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Yerusholayim thirty-one years; his mother’s name was Yedidoh daughter of Adoyoh of Botzkas.
וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ בְּכׇל־דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֔יו וְלֹא־סָ֖ר יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃{פ}
He did what was right in the eyes of Adonoy, and he followed in all the way[s] of Dovid his father; he turned away neither right nor left.
And it was in the eighteenth year of king Yoshiyahu, that the king sent Shophon son of Atzalyohu son of Meshullom, the scribe, to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, saying,
“Go up [and tell] Chilkiyohu the kohein gadol that he should gather all the silver that was brought to the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, which the custodians of the utensils collected from the people.
Let them deliver it into the hands of the supervisors of the work, who are appointed in the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, and they should give it to the workers who are in the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy, to repair the damage of the Beis [Hamikdosh].
To the carpenters, to the builders, and to the masons; to buy wood and quarried stones to repair the Beis [Hamikdosh].
However, no reckoning should be made with them of the silver that is given into their hand, for they deal honestly.”
Chilkiyohu the kohein gadol said to Shophon the scribe, “I have found the Torah Scroll in the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy,” and Chilkiyoh gave the Scroll to Shophon, and he read it.
Shophon the scribe came to the king and brought back word to the king, and said, “Your servants have melted the silver that was found in the Beis [Hamikdosh], and they have given it into the hand[s] of the supervisors of the work who were appointed over the Beis [Hamikdosh] of Adonoy.
Shophon the scribe told the king, saying, “Chilkiyoh the kohein gave me a Scroll; and Shophon read it before the king.
And it was when the king heard the words of the Torah Scroll, that he rent his garments.
The king commanded Chilkiyoh the kohein, Achikom son of Shophon, Achbor son of Michoyoh, Shophon the scribe, and Asoyoh the king’s servant, saying,
“Go, inquire of Adonoy on my behalf, on behalf of the people, and on behalf of all of Yehudah regarding the words of this Scroll which has been found; for great is the wrath of Adonoy which is kindled against us because our fathers did not observe the words of this Scroll, to do according to all that is written for us.”
And they went— Chilkiyohu the kohein, Achikom, Achbor, Shophon and Asoyoh to Chuldoh the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvoh son of Charchas, the keeper of the garments, and she was sitting in Yerusholayim in the study house, and they spoke to her.
She said to them, “So has Adonoy, God of Yisroel said, ‘Say to the man who sent you to me.
So has Adonoy said, ‘Behold, I am bringing a calamity upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the Scroll that the king of Yehudah read.
Because they have forsaken Me and have burned incense to the gods of others, in order to provoke Me with all their deeds, My wrath is kindled against this place, and it will not be extinguished.’
And concerning the king of Yehudah who has sent you to inquire of Adonoy, so shall you say to him, ‘So has Adonoy God of Yisroel said, “The words are what you heard.
Because your heart has become soft, and you have humbled yourself before Adonoy when you heard what I spoke concerning this place and its inhabitants, to become a desolation and a curse, and you rent your garments and wept before Me; I, too, have heard,’ says Adonoy.
Therefore, behold, I gather you in to your forefathers, and you will be gathered into your grave in peace; your eyes will not see any of the calamity that I am bringing upon this place.” And they brought back word to the king.
