And it was after this, that Avsholom, the son of Dovid had a pretty sister, whose name was Tomor and Amnon, the son of Dovid loved her.
Amnon was anguished to [the point of] sickness because of [his love for] his sister Tomor because she was a virgin. It was hidden from the eyes of Amnon [how] to do anything to her.
Amnon had a friend, whose name was Yonodov, the son of Shimoh the brother of Dovid. Yonodov was a very smart man.
He said to him, Why are you like this, so weak every morning, son of the king? Tell me." Amnon said to him, "I love Tomor, the sister of my brother Avsholom."
Yehonodov said to him, "Lie on your bed and [pretend to] be sick. Your father will come to see you, and [then] tell him, 'Please have my sister Tomor come and feed me a meal. She should make the meal [before] my eyes in order that I should see [it] and I will eat from her hand.' "
Amnon lied down and [pretended] he was sick. The king came to see him. and Amnon said to the king, "Please have my sister Tomor come and make two dumplings [before] my eyes and I will eat from her hand."
Dovid sent for Tomor in the house saying, "Go to the house of your brother Amnon and make him a meal.
Tomor went to the house of her brother Amnon and he was lying down. She took dough and kneaded it, she made a paste [before] his eyes and she cooked the dumplings.
She took the pan and poured them out before him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, "All men should leave me." And all the men left him.
Amnon said to Tomor, "Bring me the food into the room and I will eat from your hand." Tomor took the dumplings that she made and brought them into the room to her brother Amnon.
She brought them near to him to eat, and he grabbed her and said to her, "Come lie with me my sister."
She said to him, "No, my brother, do not rape me because this is not done in Yisroel. Do not commit this disgrace.
And me, where will I take my shame? You will be as one of the lowlives in Yisroel. Now, please speak to the king because he will not keep me from you.
He did not want to listen to her voice and he overpowered her, raped her and laid with her.
Amnon hated her with very great hatred for greater was the hatred that he hated her then the love with which he had loved her, and Amnon told her, "Get up, go."
She said to him, "Do not do this thing, this is a greater evil then the other [first] one that you have done to me to send me away." He did not want to listen to her.
He called his boy that was attending to him and he said, "Please send this [women] from before me outside and close the door after her."
And upon her was her multicolored robe because the virgin daughters of the king wore [such] robes. His servant brought her outside and closed the door after her.
Tomor put dirt on her head and tore the multicolored robe that was on her. She put her hand on her head and she went forth crying [as she went].
Her brother said to her, "Was your brother Haiminon [Amnon] with you? And now [that its done] my sister keep quiet, he is your brother. Do not put your heart to this matter." Tomor returned desolate to the house of her brother Avsholom.
King Dovid heard all these things and became very angry.
וְלֹא־דִבֶּ֧ר אַבְשָׁל֛וֹם עִם־אַמְנ֖וֹן לְמֵרָ֣ע וְעַד־ט֑וֹב כִּֽי־שָׂנֵ֤א אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֶת־אַמְנ֔וֹן עַל־דְּבַר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִנָּ֔ה אֵ֖ת תָּמָ֥ר אֲחֹתֽוֹ׃{פ}
Avsholom did not speak with Amnon neither bad or good because Avsholom hated Amnon because he had raped his sister, Tomor.
Two years [later], they were shearing for Avsholom in Baal Chatsor which is near Ephraim. Avsholom invited all the king's sons.
Avsholom came to the king and said, "They are shearing for your servant, may the king and his servants go with your servant."
The king said to Avsholom, "No, my son. Let us not all go and let us not all weigh [too] heavy upon you," He [Avsholom] beseeched him [Dovid], [but] he did not want to and blessed him.
Avsholom said, "Will not my brother Amnon come with us?" The king said to him, "Why should he go with you?"
וַיִּפְרׇץ־בּ֖וֹ אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אִתּוֹ֙ אֶת־אַמְנ֔וֹן וְאֵ֖ת כׇּל־בְּנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃{ס}
Avsholom beseeched him [Dovid] and he sent Amnon with him [with] all the king's sons.
Avsholom commanded his young men saying, "Look out for [when] Amnon's heart is happy from wine and I tell you 'Strike Amnon' and kill him, do not fear; because I commanded you [to do so]. Be strong and be valiant."
Avsholom's young men did to Amnon as Avsholom commanded. All the king's sons rose, and each man mounted his mule and they fled.
וַֽיְהִי֙ הֵ֣מָּה בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְהַשְּׁמֻעָ֣ה בָ֔אָה אֶל־דָּוִ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר הִכָּ֤ה אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֶת־כׇּל־בְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְלֹא־נוֹתַ֥ר מֵהֶ֖ם אֶחָֽד׃{פ}
As they were on the way the news came to Dovid saying, "Avsholom struck [down] all the king's children and not one is left."
וַיָּ֧קׇם הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ וַיִּקְרַ֥ע אֶת־בְּגָדָ֖יו וַיִּשְׁכַּ֣ב אָ֑רְצָה וְכׇל־עֲבָדָ֥יו נִצָּבִ֖ים קְרֻעֵ֥י בְגָדִֽים׃{ס}
The king rose, he rent his clothes and he laid down on the ground. All his servants stood by with torn clothes.
Yonodov replied, he was the son of Shimoh [who was] Dovid's brother and said, "My master, do not say that all the young men, the sons of the king were killed because only Amnon died. Because this has been Avsholom's order from the day he [Amnon] raped his sister, Tomor.
וְעַתָּ֡ה אַל־יָשֵׂם֩ אֲדֹנִ֨י הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ אֶל־לִבּוֹ֙ דָּבָ֣ר לֵאמֹ֔ר כׇּל־בְּנֵ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מֵ֑תוּ כִּֽי־(אם)־אַמְנ֥וֹן לְבַדּ֖וֹ מֵֽת׃{פ}
And now, Let not my master, the king take this thing to his heart saying, 'All the king's sons died,' for only Amnon died."
Avsholom fled. The lookout boy lifted his eyes and saw that there was a great multitude following after him on the highway by the side of the mountain.
Yonodov said to the king, "The king's sons have come [back], as the words of your servant [described] so it was.
And as he finished speaking, the king's sons came and lifted up their voices and wept. So too, the king and all his servants wept greatly.
Avsholom fled and went to Talmy, the son of Amihud, the king of Geshur He [Dovid] mourned his son all the days.
Avsholom fled and went to Geshur and was there for three years.
וַתְּכַל֙ דָּוִ֣ד הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לָצֵ֖את אֶל־אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם כִּי־נִחַ֥ם עַל־אַמְנ֖וֹן כִּי־מֵֽת׃{ס}
King Dovid desired to go out to Avsholom because he was consoled concerning the death of Amnon.
