The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

And after this, Dovid asked of Adonoy saying, "Should I go up to one of the cities of Yehudah?" Adonoy said to him, "Go up." Dovid said, "Where should I go up to?" And He said, "To Chevron."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Dovid went up there as did his two wives, Achinoam the Yizraelite and Avigayil the [former] wife of Novol from Carmel.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Dovid brought up his men that were with him, each man and his household, and they settled in the cities of Chevron.

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּמְשְׁחוּ־שָׁ֧ם אֶת־דָּוִ֛ד לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ לְדָוִד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַנְשֵׁי֙ יָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר קָבְר֖וּ אֶת־שָׁאֽוּל׃{ס}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The people of Yehudah came and anointed Dovid there to be the king over Beis Yehudah. They informed Dovid, telling [him] that the people of Yoveish Gilod had buried Shaul.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Dovid sent messengers to the people of Yoveish Gilod and he said to them, "You should be blessed before Adonoy for this kindness that you have done for your master, for Shaul, that which you buried him."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

"And now, Adonoy should do kindness and truth unto you. I will also do the same unto you for this good deed, that you have done."

וְעַתָּ֣ה**׀** תֶּחֱזַ֣קְנָה יְדֵיכֶ֗ם וִֽהְיוּ֙ לִבְנֵי־חַ֔יִל כִּי־מֵ֖ת אֲדֹנֵיכֶ֣ם שָׁא֑וּל וְגַם־אֹתִ֗י מָשְׁח֧וּ בֵית־יְהוּדָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

"Now, strengthen you hands and become brave because your master Shaul has died, and the House of Yehudah have anointed me to be king over them."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner, the son of Ner, Shaul's military chief of staff took Ish Boshes, the son of Shaul and brought him to Machanoyim.

וַיַּמְלִכֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־הַגִּלְעָ֔ד וְאֶל־הָאֲשׁוּרִ֖י וְאֶֽל־יִזְרְעֶ֑אל וְעַל־אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ וְעַל־בִּנְיָמִ֔ן וְעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כֻּלֹּֽה׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He made him king over Gilod, over Asher, over Yizrael, over Ephraim, over Binyomin and over all Yisroel.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Forty year old was Ish Boshes, the son of Shaul when he reigned over Yisroel. He reigned for two years. But the House of Yehuda followed David.

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִסְפַּ֣ר הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר֩ הָיָ֨ה דָוִ֥ד מֶ֛לֶךְ בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן עַל־בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃{ס}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

And the number of years, that David was king in Chevron, over the house of Yehuda was seven years and six months.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner, the son of Ner and the servants of Ish Boshes, the son of Shaul left Machanoyim and went to Givon

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yoav, the son of Tseruyoh and David's servants went out and met with them at the pool of Givon. One party sat on one side of the pool and the other party sat on the other side.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner said to Yoav, "Let the young soldiers get up and playfight before us." And Yoav said, "Let them get up."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

And they got up and crossed over to the other side [of the pool] in even numbers — twelve from [the tribe of] Binyamin, for Ish Boshes, the son of Shaul, and twelve from the servants of Dovid.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Each of the men grabbed his opponent's head and [thrust] his sword in his opponent's side, and they all fell [dead] together. That place was called the plain of swords which is in Givon.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The fighting was intense on that day, Avner and men of Yisroel were beaten by the servants of Dovid.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The three sons of Tseruyoh were there Yoav, Avishai and Asoel. Asoel was light on his feet, like one of the deer in a field.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Asoel chased after Avner, and did not stray right or left from pursuing Avner.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner turned around and said, "Are you Asoel?" and he replied, "It is I."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner said to him, "Stray to your right or your left, and grab for yourself one of the soldiers, and take for yourself his weapon. Asoel did not want to veer off from [running] after him.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner continued and said to Asoel, "Veer off from [running] after me. Why should I strike you [dead] to the ground? How will I face your brother?"

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He refused to veer off and Avner hit him with the back of the spear into the fifth rib. The spear came out from the back of him and he fell there and died in his place. And it was that all [the pursuers] who reached the place where Asoel fell and died, stopped [their pursuit].

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yoav and Avishai chased after Avner, and the sun set [as] they had reached Givas Amoh that faces Giach on the way to the desert of Givon.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The men of Binyomin regrouped behind Avner and became one unit and they stood atop a mountain.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner called to Yoav and said, "Will the sword be killing forever? You know it will come to a bitter end. For how long will you not tell the people to turn around and not pursue their brothers."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yoav said, By the life of Elokim, if you had not spoken [earlier] then already from the morning the people would have gone up [and left] each man [from pursuing] after his brother.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yoav blew the Shofer. All the people stopped and no longer pursued after [the men of] Yisroel. They no longer continued to fight [with them].

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Avner and his men traveled in the plain all that night. They crossed the Yardein, and traveled through all of the Bisron [region] and they came to Machanoim.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yoav turned away from [chasing] after Avner and he gathered all the people. There was missing from the servants of Dovid, [a total of] nineteen men and Asoel.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Dovid's servants killed [many] from the people of Binyomin and of Avner's men. Three hundred and sixty men died.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They carried Asoel and buried him in the grave of his father that is in Beis Lechem. Yoav and his men traveled all night and dawn [broke] for them [as they came] in [to] Chevron.
