Now Pashĥur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Yirmeyahu prophesied these things.
Then Pashĥur smote Yirmeyahu the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Binyamin, which was by the house of the Lord.
וַֽיְהִי֙ מִֽמׇּחֳרָ֔ת וַיֹּצֵ֥א פַשְׁח֛וּר אֶֽת־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ מִן־הַמַּהְפָּ֑כֶת וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ לֹ֤א פַשְׁחוּר֙ קָרָ֤א יְהֹוָה֙ שְׁמֶ֔ךָ כִּ֖י אִם־מָג֥וֹר מִסָּבִֽיב׃{ס}
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashĥur brought Yirmeyahu out of the stocks. Then Yirmeyahu said to him, The Lord has called thy name not Pashĥur, but Magor-missaviv (Terror all Around.)
For thus says the Lord, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thy eyes shall behold it: and I will give all Yehuda into the hand of the king of Bavel, and he shall carry them captive into Bavel, and shall slay them with the sword.
Moreover I will deliver all the wealth of this city, and all its gains, and all its precious things, and all the treasures of the kings of Yehuda will I give into the hand of their enemies, who shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Bavel.
וְאַתָּ֣ה פַשְׁח֗וּר וְכֹל֙ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י בֵיתֶ֔ךָ תֵּלְכ֖וּ בַּשֶּׁ֑בִי וּבָבֶ֣ל תָּב֗וֹא וְשָׁ֤ם תָּמוּת֙ וְשָׁ֣ם תִּקָּבֵ֔ר אַתָּה֙ וְכׇל־אֹֽהֲבֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁר־נִבֵּ֥אתָ לָהֶ֖ם בַּשָּֽׁקֶר׃{פ}
And thou, Pashĥur, and all that dwell in thy house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Bavel, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied lies.
O Lord, Thou didst persuade me, and I was persuaded: Thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I cry out aloud, I shout of violence and ruin; therefore the word of the Lord is made a reproach unto me, and a derision all the day.
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with containing myself, and I cannot.
Though I heard the calumny of many, the terror all around. Denounce, and we will denounce him, say my familiar friends as they watch for my stumbling, Perhaps he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.
But the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
וַיהֹוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ בֹּחֵ֣ן צַדִּ֔יק רֹאֶ֥ה כְלָי֖וֹת וָלֵ֑ב אֶרְאֶ֤ה נִקְמָֽתְךָ֙ מֵהֶ֔ם כִּ֥י אֵלֶ֖יךָ גִּלִּ֥יתִי אֶת־רִיבִֽי׃{ס}
But, O Lord of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the inward parts and the heart, let me see Thy vengeance on them: for to Thee have I opened my cause.
שִׁ֚ירוּ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה הַֽלְל֖וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּ֥י הִצִּ֛יל אֶת־נֶ֥פֶשׁ אֶבְי֖וֹן מִיַּ֥ד מְרֵעִֽים׃{ס}
Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord: for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
Cursed be the day on which I was born: let not the day on which my mother bore me be blessed.
Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born to thee; making him very glad.
And let that man be as the cities which the Lord overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and an alarm at noontide;
because he slew me not from the womb; so that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb always great.
לָ֤מָּה זֶּה֙ מֵרֶ֣חֶם יָצָ֔אתִי לִרְא֥וֹת עָמָ֖ל וְיָג֑וֹן וַיִּכְל֥וּ בְּבֹ֖שֶׁת יָמָֽי׃{פ}
Why did I come out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
