The word that came to Yirmeyahu from the Lord in the tenth year of Żidqiyyahu king of Yehuda, which was the eighteenth year of Nevukhadreżżar.

At that time, the king of Bavel’s army was besieging Yerushalayim: and Yirmeyahu the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the house of the king of Yehuda.

For Żidqiyyahu king of Yehuda had shut him up, saying, why dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Bavel, and he shall take it;

and Żidqiyyahu king of Yehuda shall not escape out of the hand of the Kasdim, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Bavel, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes:

and he shall lead Żidqiyyahu to Bavel, and there shall he be until I visit him, says the Lord: though you fight with the Kasdim, you shall not prosper?

And Yirmeyahu said, The word of the Lord has come to me, saying,

Behold, Ḥanam᾽el the son of Shallum thy uncle shall come to thee, saying, Buy my field that is in ῾Anatot: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.

So Ḥanam᾽el my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in ῾Anatot, which is in the country of Binyamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

And I bought the field from Ḥanam᾽el my uncle’s son, that was in ῾Anatot, and weighed him the money, seventeen shekels of silver.

And I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed the money in the balances.

So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and which was open:

and I gave the deed of the purchase to Barukh the son of Neriyya, the son of Meĥaseya, in the sight of Ḥanam᾽el my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the men of Yehuda that sat in the court of the guard.

And I charged Barukh before them, saying,

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Yisra᾽el; Take these documents, this deed of the purchase, both that which is sealed, and this open deed; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may last for many days.

For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Yisra᾽el; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be bought again in this land.

Now when I had delivered the deed of the purchase to Barukh the son of Neriyya, I prayed to the Lord, saying,

Ah Lord God! behold, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for Thee:

Thou showst loyal love to thousands, and dost recompense the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: O great and mighty God! the Lord of hosts is his name,

Great in counsel, and mighty in performance: Thy eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

who has set signs and wonders in the land of Miżrayim, to this day, and in Yisra᾽el, and among mankind: and hast made Thee a name, as at this day;

and hast brought Thy people Yisra᾽el out of the land of Miżrayim with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror;

and hast given them this land, which Thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;

and they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not Thy voice, neither followed Thy Tora; they have done nothing of all that Thou didst command them to do: therefore Thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:

behold the siege works are come to the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Kasdim that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what Thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, Thou seest it.

And Thou hast said to me, O Lord God, Buy the field for money and take witnesses; though the city is given into the hand of the Kasdim.

Then came the word of the Lord to Yirmeyahu, saying,

Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

Therefore thus says the Lord; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Kasdim, and into the hand of Nevukhad­reżżar king of Bavel, and he shall take it:

and the Kasdim, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire to this city, and burn it together with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense to the Ba῾al, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.

For the children of Yisra᾽el and the children of Yehuda have done only evil before Me, from their youth: for the children of Yisra᾽el have only provoked Me to anger with the work of their hands, says the Lord.

For this has been to Me as a provocation of My anger and of My fury from the day that they built it and to this day; that I should remove it from before My face,

because of all the evil of the children of Yisra᾽el and of the children of Yehuda, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Yehuda, and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.

And they have turned their back to me, and not their face: though I taught them, teaching them from morning till night, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.

But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.

And they built the high places of the Ba῾al, which are in the valley of Ben-hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molekh; which I did not command them, nor did it come into my mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Yehuda to sin.

And now therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Yisra᾽el, concerning this city, of which you say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Bavel by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;

behold, I will gather them out of all countries, into which I have driven them in My anger, and in My fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

and they shall be My people, and I will be their God:

and I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for their good, and that of their children after them:

and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing good to them; but I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not turn aside from me.

And I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will truly plant them in this land, with My whole heart and with My whole soul.

For thus says the Lord; Just as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

And fields shall be brought in this land of which you say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Kasdim.

Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe deeds, and seal them, and take witnesses, in the land of Binyamin, and in the places about Yerushalayim, and in the cities of Yehuda, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the coastal plain, and in the cities of the Negev: for I will cause their captivity to return, says the Lord.
