After Avimelech, there arose, to save Yisroel, Tola ben Pua ben Dodo, a constituent of Yesachar. He dwelt at Shomir, on Mount Ephraim.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּט֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֖מׇת וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר בְּשָׁמִֽיר׃{פ}

He judged Yisroel twenty three years. He died, and was buried at Shomir.

After him, there rose Yair the Gilodite. He judged Yisroel twenty two years.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He had thirty sons, who rode thirty thoroughbreds, and owned thirty towns. They are entitled 'The towns of Yair' to this day, and are located in the territory of Gilod.

וַיָּ֣מׇת יָאִ֔יר וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּקָמֽוֹן׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yair died, and was buried in Kamon.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel resumed acting wickedly in Adonoy's eyes. They worshipped the Baals and Ashtaros; the deities of Arom, the deities of Tzidon, the deities of Moav, the deities of the Bnei Ammon, and the deities of the P'lishtim. They abandoned Adonoy, and did not worship him.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Adonoy was infuriated with Yisroel. He delivered them into the hand of the Pelishtim, and the hand of the Bnei Ammon.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They smashed and shattered the Bnei Yisroel that year, and for eighteen years, all the Bnei Yisroel that were across the Yardein, in the Emorite territory in Gilod.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Ammon crossed the Yardein to wage war as well with Yehudah, Binyomin, and the house of Ephraim. Yisroel was in great agony.

וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר חָטָ֣אנוּ לָ֔ךְ וְכִ֤י עָזַ֙בְנוּ֙ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־הַבְּעָלִֽים׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel cried out to Adonoy, saying, "We have sinned against you, we have abandoned our God and worshiped the Baals."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Adonoy said to the Bnei Yisroel, "Was it not Mitzrayim, and the Emorites, and the Bnei Ammon, and the Pelishtites.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

And the Tzidonites, and Amoleik and Maon who oppressed you? And when you cried out to Me, I rescued you from their hands.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yet you have abandoned Me, and worshiped other gods. I shall, therefore, no longer rescue you.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Go on, cry out to the gods whom you prefer. Let them rescue you in your time of agony."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel said to Adonoy, "We have sinned! Do with us as you see fit, but please, save us today!"

וַיָּסִ֜ירוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַנֵּכָר֙ מִקִּרְבָּ֔ם וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה וַתִּקְצַ֥ר נַפְשׁ֖וֹ בַּעֲמַ֥ל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They purged themselves of their alien idols, and worshiped Adonoy, and His soul was grieved at Yisroel's anguish.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Ammon were called together, and camped at Gilod. The Bnei Yisroel mobilized, and camped at Mitzpah.

וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ הָעָ֜ם שָׂרֵ֤י גִלְעָד֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֔הוּ מִ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָחֵ֔ל לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם בִּבְנֵ֣י עַמּ֑וֹן יִֽהְיֶ֣ה לְרֹ֔אשׁ לְכֹ֖ל יֹשְׁבֵ֥י גִלְעָֽד׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The people—the leading officials of Gilod—remarked to each other, "Anyone who initiates a war against the Bnei Ammon will become head of all the inhabitants of Gilod."
