The men of Ephraim were called together, and crossed northward. They declared to Yiftoch, "Why did you cross to wage war against the Bnei Ammon without calling on us to accompany you? We shall burn down your home over you!"

Yiftoch retorted to them, "I was a man at war, I and my people, against the Bnei Ammon—extremely so. I cried out to you, but you would not rescue me from their hand.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

When I saw that you would not rescue, I placed my life in my hands and crossed to the Bnei Ammon, and Adonoy delivered them into my hand. Why did you come up to me today to fight me?"

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Yiftoch mobilized all the men in Gilod, and waged war against Ephraim. The men of Gilod struck down Ephraim, since the contemptibles among Ephraim had said, "What are you, Gilod, amidst Ephraim and Menashe?"

The Gilodites captured the Yardein crossings from Ephraim. Then it happened that, when the contemptibles of Ephraim requested passage, the Gilodites would say to them, "Are you an Ephrasite?" and they would reply in the negative.

They would then say to them, "Say Shiboles, please," but they would say, "Siboleth," as they were not able to pronounce it properly. Then they would detain them, and execute them at the Yardein crossings. At that time there fell from Ephraim, forty two thousand men.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט יִפְתָּ֛ח אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שֵׁ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֑ים וַיָּ֗מׇת יִפְתָּח֙ הַגִּלְעָדִ֔י וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּעָרֵ֥י גִלְעָֽד׃{פ}
