The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

These are the nations whom Adonoy permitted to remain so that Yisroel would be tested through them—all those who were ignorant of all the Canaanite wars.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Only so that the generations of the Bnei Yisroel might know about martial training, whereas this was unknown earlier.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Five P'lishtite sovereignties, and all the Canaanites, Tzidonites, and Chivites who dwelt at Mount Levonon, from Mount Baal Chermon to Chamos pass.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They were there so that Yisroel would be tested through them; to ascertain whether they would accept Adonoy's commandments which He commanded to their forefathers through Moshe.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, Chitites, Emorites, Perizites, Chivites, and Yevusites.

וַיִּקְח֨וּ אֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיהֶ֤ם לָהֶם֙ לְנָשִׁ֔ים וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם נָתְנ֣וּ לִבְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They took their daughters as wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they worshiped their gods.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel acted wickedly in Adonoy's eyes. They were oblivious to Adonoy, their God, and worshiped the Baalim and Asheros.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Adonoy was furious with the Bnei Yisroel, and delivered them into the hand of Kushan Rishasayim, king of Aram Naharayim. The Bnei Yisroel served Kushan Rishasayim eight years.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Then the Bnei Yisroel cried out to Adonoy, and Adonoy provided a saviour to the Bnei Yisroel and He rescued them—Osniel ben Kenaz, Caleiv's younger brother.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Adonoy's spirit was upon him, and he judged Yisroel, and went to war. Adonoy delivered into his hand Kushan Rishasayim, king of Aram, and his hand prevailed over Kushan Rishasayim.

וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָאָ֖רֶץ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֖מׇת עׇתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־קְנַֽז׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The land was tranquil for forty years; then Osniel ben Kenaz died.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel resumed acting wickedly in Adonoy's eyes, so Adonoy empowered Eglon, king of Moav, over Yisroel, since they had acted wickedly in Adonoy's eyes.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He mobilized the sons of Ammon and Amoleik. Then he advanced, and struck down Yisroel, and they occupied the City of Dates.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The Bnei Yisroel served Eglon, king of Moav, eighteen years.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Then the Bnei Yisroel cried out to Adonoy, and Adonoy provided them with a saviour—Ehud ben Gera, of Binyomin, a man whose right arm was immobile. The Bnei Yisroel dispatched, in his charge, a gift to Eglon, king of Moav.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Ehud fashioned, for himself, a double edged dagger one gomed long, and fastened it under his clothing, over his right thigh.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Then he brought the gift to Eglon, king of Moav; Eglon was extremely obese.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Now, when he finished bringing the gift, he escorted the people who bore the gift.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He then returned from the quarry near Gilgal, and declared: "I have a matter of secrecy for you, O king". He said, "Hsst!", and all his attendants left.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Ehud came close to him, as he sat in his private penthouse veranda, and Ehud said, "I have a Divine message for you!" He rose from the throne.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Ehud then extended his left hand, seized the dagger from his right thigh, and plunged it into his abdomen.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

The hilt, as well, entered, after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, as he did not withdraw the dagger from his abdomen; and the waste matter oozed.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Ehud went out to the hallway, closed the penthouse doors behind him, and locked them.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

As he left, his servants came, and noticed that the penthouse doors were locked. They said, "He is merely relieving himself in the veranda privy."

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They waited a considerable time, and yet, he did not open the penthouse doors. They took the key and opened up—there was their master. He had toppled to the ground, dead.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Ehud escaped while they dawdled. He passed the quarries and escaped in the underbrush.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

It happened that, when he arrived, he sounded the shofar at Mount Efrayim. The Bnei Yisroel descended the mountain with him, and he was at the forefront.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

He told them, "Charge behind me, for Adonoy has delivered your enemy, Moav, into your hands." They descended behind him, took control of the Yardein passes towards Moav, and did not permit anyone to cross.

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

They struck down Moav at that time—ten thousand men, all lusty, all valiant men. No one escaped.

וַתִּכָּנַ֤ע מוֹאָב֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא תַּ֖חַת יַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הָאָ֖רֶץ שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

Moav was subjugated, that day, under the hand of Yisroel, and the land was tranquil eighty years.

וְאַחֲרָ֤יו הָיָה֙ שַׁמְגַּ֣ר בֶּן־עֲנָ֔ת וַיַּ֤ךְ אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ שֵֽׁשׁ־מֵא֣וֹת אִ֔ישׁ בְּמַלְמַ֖ד הַבָּקָ֑ר וַיּ֥וֹשַׁע גַּם־ה֖וּא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{פ}

The Metsudah Tanach series, Lakewood, N.J

After him, there was Shamgar ben Anas, who struck down six hundred P'lishtite men with a cattle goad. He, too, saved Yisroel.
