Had He meted out judgment against their gods but not slayed their first born: The order of events in Dayyenu does not follow the order of Scripture. In scripture the death of the first born precedes the judgment of the gods of Egypt: “I smote their first born and I meted out judgment to all the gods of Egypt.” This is to teach us that God does not mete out judgment to a nation without first judging its gods. The verse however reflects the aspect of the judgment which the Israelites experienced first – the death of the first born.
