Here the Maggid offers a simpler explanation based on the similarity of language. We eat bitter herbs for the bitterness of Israel in Egypt. They were made bitter by the hard work they performed for Pharaoh in public works and the hard labor they performed for the Egyptians in the field. The Egyptian people were far worse than Pharaoh for their labors were meant to break the bodies of the Israelites.
