And the Lord spoke to Moshe in mount Sinay, saying,

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai [(Just as the general rules and specific ordinances of shemitah (the sabbatical year) were given at Sinai, so, with all the mitzvoth)], saying:

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

For six years you shall plant your field and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and you shall harvest its produce.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Six years shall you sow your field and six years shall you prune your vineyard, and you shall collect its produce.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

But the seventh year shall be a Shabbos of rest for the land, a Shabbos for Adonoy, you shall not plant your field and you shall not prune your vineyard.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

but in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath for the Lord: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And in the seventh year, a Sabbath of resting shall there be for the land [i.e., for the fields and for the vineyards], a Sabbath to the L-rd; your field you shall not sow, and your vineyard you shall not prune.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

[Even] crops that grew on their own [from the seeds of your previous] harvest you shall not reap, and the grapes of your untended vines you shall not gather; it shall be a year of complete rest for the land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

That which grows of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, nor gather the grapes of thy undressed vine: for it shall be a year of rest for the land.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

The after-growth of your harvest [i.e., what fell there at harvest time] you shall not reap [i.e., you shall not take possession of it], and the grapes of your guarded vine [i.e., your vine which you did not render hefker (ownerless)] you shall not gather; a year of rest shall there be for the land.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the resting of the land [i.e., your "non-guarded" (hefker) land] shall be for you to eat: for you, and your man-servant, and your maid-servant, and your hired man, and your sojourners who dwell with you.

וְלִ֨בְהֶמְתְּךָ֔ וְלַֽחַיָּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּאַרְצֶ֑ךָ תִּהְיֶ֥ה כׇל־תְּבוּאָתָ֖הּ לֶאֱכֹֽל׃{ס}

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

[Also] for your domesticated animals and for the [wild] beasts that are in your land shall all of its produce be for food.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and for thy cattle, and for the beast in thy land, shall all its increase be food.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And for your beast and for the animal which is in your land shall be all its produce to eat. [So long as the animal eats from the field (i.e., so long as produce is found in the field), you may feed it to your beast from (what you have stored) in the house. If it has ended for the animal in the field, "end it" (i.e., remove it) for your beast from the house.]

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you shall count for yourself seven Sabbaths [i.e., shemitoth] of years — seven [shemitah] years, seven [discrete] times [(and not seven consecutive shemitah years)] — and the seven Sabbaths of years will be for you forty-nine years.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

You shall make a proclamation with the shofor on the tenth day of the seventh month. On Yom Kippur shall this shofor-proclamation be made. throughout all your land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you shall sound the shofar [in proclamation of the Jubilee] in the seventh month on the tenth day of the month. On the day of atonement shall you sound the shofar throughout the land.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

You shall sanctify the year of the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all of its inhabitants; it shall be for you a jubilee and each man shall return to his ancestral land and each man shall return to his family.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And you shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants: it shall be a jubilee for you; and you shall return every man to his possession, and you shall return every man to his family.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you shall sanctify the fiftieth year [(At its advent it is sanctified in beth-din: "The year is sanctified!")], and you shall call out freedom [for all (Hebrew) bondsmen] in the land, to all its inhabitants. "Yovel" (Jubilee) [lit., "the shofar"] shall it [(the name of the year)] be for you. And you shall return a man to his holding [(Fields return to their original owners)]; and a man to his family [(including the bondsman whose ear has been bored)] shall you return.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

It is a jubilee, [that] the year of the fiftieth year shall be for you. You shall not plant and you shall not reap [even] crops that grew on their own; and you shall not gather the [grapes of] its untended vineyard,

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be to you: you shall not sow, neither reap that which grows of itself in it, nor gather in it the grapes of thy undressed vine.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

It is a Jubilee year; the fiftieth year shall be for you. You shall not sow, and you shall not reap its aftergrowth, and you shall not glean (the grapes of) its guarded vine. [What applies to shemitah applies to Yovel, so that there are two consecutive sanctities, the forty-ninth year — shemitah, and the fiftieth year — Yovel.]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

For it is a jubilee, it shall be holy to you. Whatever is in the field, you may eat of its produce.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

For it is the jubilee; it shall be holy to you: you shall eat its increase out of the field.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

For it is a Jubilee year; holy shall it be for you [It (the "holiness" of the produce of that year) is transferred to its monies (those given in exchange for it) as is the case with (the redemption of) hekdesh (sacred property). I might think that it (the "redeemed" produce itself) becomes chullin (non-consecrated); it is, therefore, written "shall it be"; it remains in its state of holiness.] From the field [i.e., on the basis of what transpires in the field], you may eat its produce [that is stored in the house (see 25:7)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

On this jubilee year, each man shall return to his ancestral land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

In the year of this jubilee you shall return every man to his possession.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

In the year of this Jubilee shall you return, each man, to his holding [(to include a field sold by a man and redeemed by his son as returning to the father on Yovel)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

If you sell anything to your neighbor, or purchase [something] from your neighbor, do not cheat one another.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if thou sell aught to thy neighbour, or buy aught of thy neighbour’s hand, you shall not defraud one another:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if you sell a selling to your fellow, or acquire from the hand of your fellow, you shall not wrong [(money wronging)], one man, his brother.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

According to the number of years after the jubilee you shall purchase [land] from your neighbor; according to the number of produce years he shall sell it to you.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

according to the number of years after the jubilee thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according to the number of years of the fruits he shall sell to thee:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

According to the number of years after the Jubilee year shall you buy from your fellow [i.e., Set the price according to the number of years remaining to the Yovel, when the field will return to the owner — a higher price for more years remaining; a proportionately lower price for less]; according to the number of years of crops shall he sell to you. [(It must be sold for at least two years of crops (and not blight)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Based on the abundance of years, you shall increase its purchase price and based on the lack of years you shall decrease its purchase price, since it is the number of produce-seasons that he is selling to you.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

according to the multitude of years thou shalt increase its price, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for what he sells thee is a number of years of produce.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

According to the numerousness of years shall you increase its price, and according to the fewness of years shall you diminish its price; for a number of crops (until the Yovel) he sells to you (and not the field itself.)

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

You shall not cheat one another, and you shall fear your God for I am Adonoy, your God.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

You shall not therefore defraud one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the Lord your God.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you shall not wrong [(verbal wronging)] one man, his fellow [by taunting him or giving him improper advice.] And you shall fear your G-d, [who knows your intentions]. For I am the L-rd your G-d.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

You shall fulfill My statutes and keep My laws and fulfill them, and you will then live in the land in security.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And you shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and you shall dwell in the land in safety.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you shall observe My statutes, and My judgments shall you keep and do them, and you shall dwell on the land secure. [For non-observance of shemitah results in exile (see 26:34). (The seventy years of Babylonian exile were for seventy shemitoth that were not observed.)]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The land will give forth its fruit and you will eat your fill, and you will live securely on it.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the land shall yield her fruit, and you shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the land will give its fruit, and you will eat to satiety [(the food will be "blessed" in your innards)], and you will dwell securely thereon [without fear of drought].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

If you shall say (ask) What will we eat in the seventh year, for lo! we have not planted nor gathered our produce?

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if you shall say, What shall we eat in the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if you say: What shall we eat in the seventh year if we cannot sow or gather [into the house] our produce [like wine and fruits and after-growth, which falls of itself (and is not "sown," see 5)],

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

I shall command (direct) My blessing to you in the sixth year and it will produce [enough] for three years.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

I shall command My blessing for you in the sixth year, and it shall produce the crop for three years: [for Nissan (of the sixth year until Rosh HaShanah), for the seventh year, and for the eighth year until Nissan, (for in the eighth year, they will sow in Cheshvan and harvest in Nissan)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

You shall plant in the eighth year but you will still be eating from the old produce until the ninth year; until the [new] produce arrives (ripens) you shall eat [from] the old.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And you shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in, you shall eat of the old store.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you shall sow in the eighth year, and you shall eat of the old (sixth year) crop. Until the [Sukkoth of the] ninth year, until its [the eighth year's] produce comes [into the house, (the eighth year crop being stored in field granaries all summer and being brought into the house only in Tishrei)], you shall eat of the old crop.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is Mine, for, you are [merely as] foreigners and resident aliens before Me.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with me.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the land shall not be sold in perpetuity [(a negative commandment directed to the buyer, against non-return of the field in Yovel)], for Mine is the land, [and not yours (so that you need not feel "put out" in returning it)]; for strangers and sojourners are you with Me.

וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֑ם גְּאֻלָּ֖ה תִּתְּנ֥וּ לָאָֽרֶץ׃{ס}

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

In all of your ancestral lands you shall grant redemption to the land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And in all the land of your possession you shall grant a redemption for the land.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And in all the land of your holding, redemption shall you give to the land. [(This introduces what follows, that one who sells his holding may redeem it after two years and the buyer cannot refuse him)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

If your brother becomes impoverished and sells some of his ancestral land, and a close relative comes and redeems that which his brother sold.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

If thy brother become poor, and has sold away some of his possession, then shall his near kinsman come to redeem it, and shall redeem that which his brother sold.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

If your brother grows poor and sells of his holding [(but not all of his holding — he should leave a field for himself) (It is derived from here that one should not sell his field unless he is sorely pressed by poverty)], then his redeemer who is near to him shall come and he shall redeem what his brother has sold [and the buyer cannot refuse him].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

[Or] if the man has no redeemer (close relative) but has acquired sufficient means and finds [it] enough to redeem it [himself],

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And a man, if there be for him no redeemer [who is able to redeem what he has sold], and his hand attains, and he finds what suffices for its redemption,

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

He shall calculate the number of years for which he sold the land and return the remainder (excess) to the man to whom he had sold it, and he shall return to his ancestral land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

then let him count the years of the sale of it, and restore the overplus to the man to whom he sold it; that he may return to his possession.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Then he shall reckon the years of its sale [i.e., the value of the yearly crops from the time of its sale], and he shall return the balance [the difference between the yearly crop values and the sales price] to the man to whom he sold it, and he shall return to his holding.

וְאִ֨ם לֹֽא־מָצְאָ֜ה יָד֗וֹ דֵּי֮ הָשִׁ֣יב לוֹ֒ וְהָיָ֣ה מִמְכָּר֗וֹ בְּיַד֙ הַקֹּנֶ֣ה אֹת֔וֹ עַ֖ד שְׁנַ֣ת הַיּוֹבֵ֑ל וְיָצָא֙ בַּיֹּבֵ֔ל וְשָׁ֖ב לַאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃{ס}

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Or if he does not have within his means enough to retrieve the land to himself, then that which he sold remains in the possession of the buyer until the jubilee year. It is then released by the jubilee and he [the seller] returns to his ancestral land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

But if his means do not suffice to regain it, then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him who has bought it until the year of jubilee: and in the jubilee it shall go out, and he shall return to his possession.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if his hand does not find what suffices to restore it to himself [(— whence it is derived that he may not redeem it by halves)], then his selling shall remain in the hand of its buyer until the Jubilee year, [the Jubilee year "releasing" it immediately upon its advent], and it shall go out in the Jubilee year, and he shall return to his holding.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

If a man shall sell a residential home [that is] within a walled city, the time allotted for its redemption shall be until the end of one year after he sold it. He has the days [of a full year] in which to redeem it.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he redeem it.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And a man, if he sells a house of dwelling in a city with a wall [from the time of Joshua the son of Nun], then its redemption shall be [only] until the end of the year of its sale [with no possibility of redemption thereafter]; [a year of] days shall be its redemption.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

If he does not redeem it by the end of a full year, the house within the city that is surrounded by a wall shall then remain in perpetuity to its purchaser for his generations (descendants.) It is not released by the jubilee.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall become the permanent property of him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubilee.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if it is not redeemed until there is filled for it a complete year, then the house which is in the city which had a wall [(in the time of Joshua, though it may not have one now)] shall stand in perpetuity to the one who bought it throughout his generations; it shall not go out in the Jubilee year [if the Jubilee year arrived in the midst of the year of sale.]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The houses of open cities which are not surrounded by a wall shall be considered as a field of the land. It shall have a redemption and it is released by the jubilee.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubilee.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the houses of open cities, which have no wall roundabout, as the field of the land shall they be reckoned [i.e., they may be redeemed until Yovel, and (if not redeemed) Yovel releases them to their original owners.] Redemption shall there be for it, [immediately, if the seller so wishes], and in the Jubilee year shall it go out [gratis].

The cities of the Levites the houses in the cities of their ancestral land, the Levites shall have an eternal right of redemption.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

But the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the cities of the Levites [the forty-eight cities which were given to them (Numbers 35:6-7)], the houses of the cities of their holding, a perpetual redemption shall there be for the Levites. [In the instance of a field, they may redeem immediately (and need not wait two years), and, in the instance of a house in a walled city they may redeem forever (and the house does not become irredeemable after a year)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

If anyone redeems [a house or field] from the Levites, then the house or his ancestral city shall be released by the jubilee, for the houses of the Levitic cities are [considered] their ancestral lands among Bnei Yisroel.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubilee: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Yisra᾽el.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if a man purchase [a house or a city] of the Levites, then the selling of the house or of the city of his holding shall go out in the Jubilee year, [and not be irredeemable like the walled-city houses of Israelites]. For the houses of the cities of the Levites are their holding in the midst of the children of Israel. [The Levites did not have fields and vineyards as inheritances; therefore, their houses and open lots are their holdings in place of fields and are redeemable like fields, so that their inheritance not depart from them.]

The field on the outskirts of their cities may not be sold for it is their perpetual ancestral land.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

But the field of the pasture lands of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the field of the open place around their cities may not be sold [by the Temple treasurer, i.e., If a Levite dedicated it to the Temple, and did not redeem it, and the treasurer sold it, it does not revert to the Cohanim in the Jubilee year (as it does in the case of an Israelite (see 27:16-20), but the Levite may always redeem it], for it is a perpetual holding for them.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if your brother grows poor and his hand falls with you, then you shall uphold him [from the time of the falling of his hand], [even if he be] proselyte or sojourner (toshav) [one who took it upon himself not to serve idolatry, but who eats neveiloth]; and he shall live with you.

You shall not take from him interest or usury and you shall fear your God, and your brother shall live with you.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

You shall not take from him interest (neshech) or increase (tarbith) [(Though neshech and tarbith are one and the same, they are stated as two to posit liability for transgression of two negative commandments)], and you shall fear your G-d, [who knows your thoughts, and do not resort to rationalizations for the taking of interest]. And your brother shall live with you.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Miżrayim, to give you the land of Kena῾an, and to be your God.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

I am the L-rd your G-d who took you out of the land of Egypt [(I discriminated between a first-born and a non first-born, and I can also discern and exact punishment from one who lends his money to a Jew on interest on the pretence that it is a gentile's)] to give you the land of Canaan [as reward for accepting My mitzvoth], to be a G-d to you [(For all who live in Eretz Yisrael are considered to have a G-d, and all who depart from it are as worshippers of idolatry.)]

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if thy brother who dwells by thee be grown poor, and be sold to thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if your brother grows poor with you, and he is sold to you, do not work with him the [demeaning] services of a bondsman, [like carrying your things after you to the bathhouse or putting on your shoes for you.]

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

As a hired man and as a sojourner shall he be with you [Employ him for the tilling of the soil and for craft work, like other hired laborers.] Until the Jubilee year shall he work with you [(If the Jubilee year intervenes before the expiration of his six years, it releases him.)]

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And he shall go out from you, he and his children with him [ — whence it is derived (since his children had not actually been sold with him) that his master is responsible for the feeding of his children]. And he shall return to his family, and to the holding of his fathers shall he return. [He is to be restored to his former dignity and not demeaned for his prior servitude.]
