the Almighty,
הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא
the Great, the Powerful, the Awesome,
אֵל עֶלְיוֹן
most high Almighty,
גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים
Who bestows beneficent kindness,
וְקוֹנֵה הַכֹּל
Who possesses everything,
וְזוֹכֵר חַסְדֵי אָבוֹת
Who remembers the piety of the Patriarchs,
וּמֵבִיא גוֹאֵל
and Who brings a redeemer
לִבְנֵי בְנֵיהֶם
to their children’s children,
לְמַֽעַן שְׁמוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה:
for the sake of His Name, with love.

Invoking the doctrines
חֲכָמִים וּנְבוֹנִים.
of our wise and understanding Sages,¹

וּמִלֶּֽמֶד
and with the teachings [acquired]

from their perceptive intuition,
אֶפְתְּחָה פִי
I open my mouth
בִּתְפִלָּה וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים.
in prayer and supplication
לְחַלּוֹת וּלְחַנֵּן
to plead and seek favor
פְּנֵי מֶֽלֶךְ
before the presence of the King,
מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים וַאֲדוֹנֵי הָאֲדוֹנִים:
the King of kings—the Master of masters.
יָרֵֽאתִי
I am awestruck
בִּפְצוֹתִי שִֽׂיחַ לְהַשְׁחִיל.
as I begin to voice my prayer;
קוּמִי לְחַלּוֹת
as I rise to plead
פְּנֵי
before the presence
נוֹרָא וְדָחִיל.
of Him Who is awesome and terrifying.
וְקָטֹֽנְתִּי מַֽעַשׂ
I am deficient in [good] deeds,
לָכֵן אַזְחִיל.
therefore I am in fear;
תְּבוּנָה חָסַֽרְתִּי וְאֵיךְ אוֹחִיל.
wisdom I lack, how can I hope?
יוֹצְרִי הֲבִינֵֽנִי
My Creator! give me understanding—
מוֹרָשָׁה לְהַנְחִיל.
Your inheritance [Torah] to possess;
אַיְּלֵֽנִי וְאַמְּצֵֽנִי
strengthen me, and give me courage,
מֵרִפְיוֹן וָחִיל.
from weakness and fear.
לַחֲשִׁי יֵרָצֶה כְּמַנְטִיף וּמַשְׁחִיל.
Accept my prayer as the incense offering²
footnotes: ² The words כְּמַנְטִיף וּמַשְׁחִיל refer to two ingredients which are part of the קְטֹרֶת, incense offering, as stated in Shemos 30:34, נָטָף וּשְׁחֵלֶת, stacte and onycha.

let my speech be as sweet as the honey-comb.
רָצוּי בְּיֽשֶׁר
Accept me as upright;

May my calling be sweet—

וּמֵאֵימַת הַדִּין
and from the dread of judgment,

Should You repay my sin in full,
הַלֵּב יָחִיל.
my heart trembles;

flow as streams.
צְדָקָה אֲקַוֶּה מִמְּךָ וְאוֹחִיל.
I yearn for Your righteousness and I hope;
יֽשֶׁר הוֹרַי זָכְרָה
the righteousness of my fathers, remember,

cause them to pray [in our behalf].
חַם לִבִּי בַּהֲגִיגִי
My heart grows hot when I pray—

Remember us for life
מֶֽלֶךְ חָפֵץ בַּחַיִּים
King, Who desires life;
וְכָתְבֵֽנוּ בְּסֵֽפֶר הַחַיִּים
and inscribe us in the Book of Life,
לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים:
for Your sake, Living God.

DIVINE MIGHT
אַתָּה גִבּוֹר לְעוֹלָם אֲדֹנָי
You are mighty forever, my Master;
מְחַיֶּה מֵתִים אַתָּה
You are the Resurrector of the dead
רַב לְהוֹשִֽׁיעַ:
the Powerful One to deliver us.
מְכַלְכֵּל חַיִּים בְּחֶֽסֶד
Sustainer of the living with kindliness,
מְחַיֵּה מֵתִים בְּרַחֲמִים רַבִּים
Resurrector of the dead with great mercy,
סוֹמֵךְ נוֹפְלִים
Supporter of the fallen,
וְרוֹפֵא חוֹלִים
and Healer of the sick,
וּמַתִּיר אֲסוּרִים
and Releaser of the imprisoned,
וּמְקַיֵּם אֱמוּנָתוֹ
and Fulfiller of His faithfulness
לִישֵׁנֵי עָפָר,
to those who sleep in the dust.
מִי כָמֽוֹךָ בַּֽעַל גְּבוּרוֹת
Who is like You, Master of mighty deeds,
וּמִי דּֽוֹמֶה לָּךְ
and who can be compared to You?
מֶֽלֶךְ מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה
King Who causes death and restores life,
וּמַצְמִֽיחַ יְשׁוּעָה:
and causes deliverance to sprout forth.

Who is like You merciful Father,
זוֹכֵר יְצוּרָיו לְחַיִּים
Who remembers His creatures for life,
בְּרַחֲמִים:
in His mercy.
וְנֶאֱמָן אַתָּה
And You are faithful
לְהַחֲיוֹת מֵתִים:
to restore the dead to life.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה
Blessed are You, Adonoy,

Resurrector of the dead.
יִמְלֹךְ יְהֹוָה לְעוֹלָם
Adonoy will reign forever;

And You, Holy One,

Almighty, we beseech You.

in heaven and upon earth,
גִּבּוֹר וְנַעֲרָץ:

He is living and enduring,
נוֹרָא וּמָרוֹם וְקָדוֹשׁ:
awesome, exalted and holy!
תָּעִיר וְתָרִֽיעַ.
Arouse Yourself and sound Your shofar¹¹

וְנַעֲרָץ בְּאֶרְאֶלֵּי קֹֽדֶשׁ הִלּוּלוֹ.
and He is revered by His holy angels,
וּבְהֵיכָלוֹ
and in His Sanctuary
כָּבוֹד אוֹמֵר כֻּלּוֹ. קָדוֹשׁ:
His glory is proclaimed by all. Holy is He.
שׁוֹמְרֵי מִצְוֹתָיו
Those who preserve His commandments
עוֹד יְשׁוּבוּן לְבִצָּרוֹן.
will return to their stronghold
נִדְבָּרִים יְרֵאָיו
when those who fear Him, converse
בְּהַכְשֵׁר וְיִתָּרוֹן.
in the intricacies of His Torah,¹⁹

Adonoy listens and hears,

Improve your ways
וּבְרִית לֹא תוּפַר.
and the covenant will not be annulled,
נַאֲקַתְכֶם יַאֲזִין
He will give ear to your cry—
שְׁחָקִים שִׁפַּר.
He Who adorned the heavens—
וְתִיטַב לַיהֹוָה
and it will please Adonoy
מִשּׁוֹר פָּר.

שִׁבְטֵי מְקוֹרָאֲךָ
The tribes of Your calling,
עֲלֵּה וְהַמְשֵׁל.
uplift them and grant them dominion;
נְטִישׁוֹת צָרִים
the branches of the enemy—
בְּהַתִּיזְךָ לְנַשֵּׁל.
cut them down and cast them away,
כִּי לַיהֹוָה הַמְּלוּכָה וּמוֹשֵׁל.
for the kingship is Adonoy’s²² and He rules.

שְׁבוּתֵֽנוּ מִמֶּרְחָק
May our exiles from afar
עֲלוֹת לְהַר קָדְשׁוֹ.
be led up to His holy mountain
וּנְפָאֲרֶֽנּוּ תָמִיד
and may we glorify Him always
בִּדְבִיר מִקְדָּשׁוֹ.
in the Holy of Holies in His temple,
כִּי זָכַר אֶת דְּבַר קָדְשׁוֹ.

כָּל ישְׁבֵי תֵבֵל
All inhabitants of the world
וְשֹֽׁכְנֵי אָֽרֶץ.
and dwellers of the earth,

will proclaim continually;
הִגְדִּיל יְהֹוָה לַעֲשׂוֹת בָּאָֽרֶץ.
“Great wonders has Adonoy done on earth.”
וְהָיָה יְהֹוָה לְמֶֽלֶךְ
And Adonoy will be King
עַל כָּל הָאָֽרֶץ.

יִשְׁפֹּט תֵּבֵל
He will judge the inhabitants of the world
בְּצֶֽדֶק.
with righteousness,
וּלְאֻמִּים בְּמֵישָׁרִים.
and nations with uprightness.
הָאֵל קָדוֹשׁ:
The Almighty, Holy is He.
וְהוּא בְאֶחָד וּמִי יְשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ.
He is One and who can refute Him?
וְנַפְשׁוֹ אִוְּתָה וַיָּֽעַשׂ.
Whatever He desires, He does.
נוֹרָא וְקָדוֹשׁ:
Awesome and holy is He.

אַדִּירֵי אֲיֻמָּה
[Yisrael who is] noble and awesome,
יַאְדִּֽירוּ בְקוֹל.
recognize His majesty, proclaiming:
יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ:
Adonoy is King;
בְּרוּאֵי בָרָק
[Angels] creatures of lightning,
יְבָרְכוּ בְקוֹל.
bless Him, proclaiming:
יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ:
Adonoy was King;
גִּבּֽוֹרֵי גֹּֽבַהּ

the wise who understand the Torah’s puzzles,
יְחַסְּנוּ בְקוֹל.
strongly praise Him saying:
יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ:
Adonoy was King;
טַפְסְרֵי טְפוּחִים
[Angels], princes of the heavens,
יְטַכְּסוּ בְקוֹל.
arrange His praise, proclaiming:
יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ:
Adonoy will be King.

joyfully exult, proclaiming:

שְׁבִיבֵי שַׁלְהֵבוֹת יְשַׁנְּנוּ בְקוֹל.
flame-flashing angels repeatedly proclaim:
יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ:
Adonoy will be King.

Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King,

Those who steadfastly praise Him
יַתְמִֽידוּ בְקוֹל.

those who stress the might of Your glory
יַתְמִֽימוּ בְקוֹל.
with perfect sincerity proclaim:

Who speaks uprightly

Who utters knowledge in judgment;
לְוָתִיק
to Him Who is steadfast,
וְעֹֽשֶׂה חֶֽסֶד בְּיוֹם דִּין:
and yet deals kindly on the day of judgment;
לְזוֹכֵר בְּרִיתוֹ בַּדִּין:
Who recalls His covenant in judgment;
לְחוֹמֵל מַעֲשָׂיו
Who has pity on His works
בְּיוֹם דִּין:
on the day of judgment;
לְטַהֵר חוֹסָיו
Who purifies those who trust in Him,
בַּדִּין:
in judgment;
לְיוֹדֵֽעַ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת
Who knows the thoughts of man
בְּיוֹם דִּין:
on the day of judgment;
לְכוֹבֵשׁ כַּעֲסוֹ בַּדִּין:
Who suppresses His anger in judgment;
לְלוֹבֵשׁ צְדָקוֹת
Who is clothed in righteousness
בְּיוֹם דִּין:
on the day of judgment;
לְמוֹחֵל עֲוֹנוֹת בַּדִּין:
Who forgives iniquities in judgment;
לְנוֹרָא תְהִלּוֹת
Who is awesome in praise
בְּיוֹם דִּין:
on the day of judgment;
לְסוֹלֵֽחַ לַעֲמוּסָיו
Who pardons those borne³¹ by Him,

Who acquires His servants, in judgment;

Who has compassion on His people

Who preserves those who love Him,
בַּדִּין:
in judgment;
לְתוֹמֵךְ תְּמִימָיו
Who supports His perfect ones
בְּיוֹם דִּין:
on the day of judgment.
וּבְכֵן
And thus
וּלְךָ תַעֲלֶה קְדֻשָּׁה.
unto You may [our] sanctification ascend,
כִּי אַתָּה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ:
for You our God are King!
