THE VIRTUE OF OUR FOREFATHERS
בָּרוּךְאַתָּה יְהֹוָה
Blessed are You, Adonoy,
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ
our God, and God of our fathers,
אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם אֱלֹהֵי יִצְחָק
God of Avraham, God of Yitzchak,
וֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב
and God of Yaakov,
הָאֵל
the Almighty,
הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא
the Great, the Powerful, the Awesome,
אֵל עֶלְיוֹן
most high Almighty,
גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים
Who bestows beneficent kindness,
וְקוֹנֵה הַכֹּל
Who possesses everything,
וְזוֹכֵר חַסְדֵי אָבוֹת
Who remembers the piety of the Patriarchs,
וּמֵבִיא גוֹאֵל
and Who brings a redeemer
לִבְנֵי בְנֵיהֶם
to their children's children,
לְמַֽעַן שְׁמוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה:
for the sake of His Name, with love.
מִסּוֹד
Invoking the doctrines
חֲכָמִים וּנְבוֹנִים.
of our wise and understanding Sages,
וּמִלֶּֽמֶד
and with the teachings [acquired]
דַּֽעַת מְבִינִים.
from their perceptive intuition,
אֶפְתְּחָה פִי
I open my mouth
בִּתְפִלָּה וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים.
in prayer and supplication
לְחַלּוֹת וּלְחַנֵּן
to plead and seek favor
פְּנֵי מֶֽלֶךְ
before the presence of the King,
מוֹחֵל וְסוֹלֵֽחַ לַעֲוֹנִים:
Forgiver and Pardoner of iniquities.
אֵיתָן
The valiant one [Avraham]
הִכִּיר אֱמוּנָתֶֽךָ.
recognized Your truth,¹
footnotes: ¹ Avraham, often referred to as אֵיתָן, the valiant one, recognized the existence and providence of Hashem at the age of three. See Maseches Nedarim 32a
בְּדוֹר
[though he lived] in a generation
לֹא יָדְעוּ לְרַצּוֹתֶֽךָ.
that knew not how to please You.²

גָּהַץ בְּךָ
He rejoiced in You
וְיִדַּע יִרְאָתֶֽךָ.
and taught others to fear You.
דָּץ לְהוֹדִֽיעַ
He took pleasure in proclaiming
לַכֹּל הַדְרָתֶֽךָ.
Your majesty, to all mankind.
הִדְרִיךְ תּוֹעִים בִּנְתִיבָתֶֽךָ.
Those who strayed, he led in Your path;
וְנִקְרָא אָב לְאֻמָּתֶֽךָ.
and he was called the father of Your nation.
זִהֵר לַעֲשׂוֹת דִּבְרָתֶֽךָ.
He was diligent to obey Your word.
חָפֵץ לַחֲסוֹת בְּצֵל שְׁכִינָתֶֽךָ.
He desired the shelter of Your Presence.
טִעֵם לָעוֹבְרִים כַּלְכְּלָתֶֽךָ.
He refreshed the wayfarers with Your food.
יִדַּע לַשָּׁבִים
He taught the penitent
כִּי אֵין בִּלְתֶּֽךָ:
that there is none but You.
חזן כִּי הֶאֱמִין בְּךָ לְחַלּוֹתֶֽךָ.
Because he believed in You, he entreated You;
לִטַּע אֵֽשֶׁל וּלְהַזְכִּיר גְּבוּרוֹתֶֽיךָ:
He planted an aishel to proclaim Your might.³
footnotes: ³ The word אֵשֶׁל has been defined as an abbreviation of the word אֲכִילָה, food, שְׁתִיָה drink, and לִנָה shelter. These were provided by Avraham to all men and he sought to win them over to the belief and acceptance of the One God.
צְדָקָה תֵּחָשֶׁב לָֽנוּ.
May it be accounted to us for righteousness;
בְּצֶֽדֶק אָב
through the righteousness of the Patriarch,
סְלַח לָֽנוּ:
pardon us.
חזן לֹא כַחֲטָאֵֽינוּ תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּֽנוּ.
Do not deal with us according to our sins,
מָגִנֵּֽנוּ כִּי לְךָ יִחָלְנוּ:
You are our shield, for we hope in You.
זָכְרֵֽנוּ לְחַיִּים
Remember us for life
מֶֽלֶךְ חָפֵץ בַּחַיִּים
King, Who desires life;
וְכָתְבֵֽנוּ בְּסֵֽפֶר הַחַיִּים
and inscribe us in the Book of Life,
לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים:
for Your sake, Living God.
מֶֽלֶךְ עוֹזֵר וּמוֹשִֽׁיעַ וּמָגֵן:
King, Helper, and Deliverer and Shield.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה
Blessed are You, Adonoy,
מָגֵן אַבְרָהָם:

גבורות
DIVINE MIGHT
אַתָּה גִבּוֹר לְעוֹלָם אֲדֹנָי
You are mighty forever, my Master;
מְחַיֶּה מֵתִים אַתָּה
You are the Resurrector of the dead
רַב לְהוֹשִֽׁיעַ:
the Powerful One to deliver us.
מְכַלְכֵּל חַיִּים בְּחֶֽסֶד
Sustainer of the living with kindliness,
מְחַיֵּה מֵתִים בְּרַחֲמִים רַבִּים
Resurrector of the dead with great mercy,
סוֹמֵךְ נוֹפְלִים
Supporter of the fallen,
וְרוֹפֵא חוֹלִים
and Healer of the sick,
וּמַתִּיר אֲסוּרִים
and Releaser of the imprisoned,
וּמְקַיֵּם אֱמוּנָתוֹ
and Fulfiller of His faithfulness
לִישֵׁנֵי עָפָר,
to those who sleep in the dust.
מִי כָמֽוֹךָ בַּֽעַל גְּבוּרוֹת
Who is like You, Master of mighty deeds,
וּמִי דּֽוֹמֶה לָּךְ
and who can be compared to You?
מֶֽלֶךְ מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה
King Who causes death and restores life,
וּמַצְמִֽיחַ יְשׁוּעָה:
and causes deliverance to sprout forth.
מָאֳהָב
When he who was loved, [Yitzchak],
וְיָחִיד לְאִמּוֹ.
the only child of his mother,
נַפְשׁוֹ לָטֶֽבַח בְּהַשְׁלִימוֹ.
surrendered himself for an offering,
שְׂרָפִים צָעֲקוּ מִמְּרוֹמוֹ.
the Seraphim cried out from the heavens,
עוֹנִים חֽוּסָה לָאֵל
saying to the merciful Almighty:
מְרַחֲמוֹ.
“Spare him.”
פּוֹדֶה וּמַצִּיל
The Redeemer and Deliverer
רִחֲמוֹ.
had compassion on him;
צִוָּה שֶׂה תְּמוּרָה
and commanded that a ram be taken
בִּמְקוֹמוֹ.
in his stead.
קָשַׁב
He [Avraham] heard a voice calling,
אַל תִּשְׁפֹּךְ דָּמוֹ.
“Do not shed his blood.”
רִחֲפוֹ רַחוּם
The merciful One hovered over him,
לְרוֹמְמוֹ.
to exalt him,
שָׁמְרוֹ וְקִיְּמוֹ
He preserved him and sustained him,
לִשְׁמוֹ.
for His Name's sake;
שִׁפֵּר תָּאֳרוֹ כְּנֹֽגַהּ יוֹמוֹ:
He made him radiant like the rising sun.
חזן תִּרְאֵֽהוּ הַיּוֹם
Regard him on this day,
כְּשָׂרוּף בְּאוּלָמוֹ.
as if he were offered in the Temple;
תִּזְכּוֹר עֲקֵדָתוֹ וְתָחוֹן עַמּוֹ:
recall his binding and pity his people.
לְפָנָיו יְקִימֵֽנוּ
In His Presence, He will sustain us,
וְנִחְיֶה.
and we shall live.
בְּצֶֽדֶק אָב
Through the righteousness of the Patriarch
נִחְיֶה:
we shall live.
חזן יְהֹוָה מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה.
Adonoy causes death and restores life,
בִּטְלָלָיו רְדוּמִים יְחַיֶּה:
with his dew, he will revive those asleep.
מִי כָמֽוֹךָ אַב הָרַחֲמִים
Who is like You merciful Father,
זוֹכֵר יְצוּרָיו לְחַיִּים
Who remembers His creatures for life,
בְּרַחֲמִים:
in His mercy.
וְנֶאֱמָן אַתָּה
And You are faithful
לְהַחֲיוֹת מֵתִים:
to restore the dead to life.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה
Blessed are You, Adonoy,
מְחַיֵּה הַמֵּתִים:
Resurrector of the dead.
אֶרְאֶלִּים בְּשֵׁם תָּם
Angels, using the perfect one's [Yaakov] name,⁴
footnotes: ⁴ The angels praise him as the God of Yaakov.
מַמְלִיכִים.
ascribe sovereignty
לְמֶֽלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים.
to the King of kings.
יָפְיוֹ לָשׁוּר
They come to view his beautiful form,
בַּכֵּס הוֹלְכִים.
engraved on [God's] throne.
יְלָדָיו הַיּוֹם צָגִים כְּמַלְאָכִים.
His children are like angels on this day⁵;
footnotes: ⁵ They are like the angels as they do not eat and drink, and do not sin on the Day of Atonement.
הַמַּקְדִּישִׁים וְתַֽחַן עוֹרְכִים.
sanctifying Him, setting forth supplication.
בְּיוֹם זֶה אֵיבָה מַשְׁלִיכִים.
On this day, they cast away animosity,⁶
footnotes: ⁶ On the day of Atonement, they ask each other’s forgiveness and thus all hostility is removed.
יַֽחַד בְּשֵׁם אֲבִיהֶם
In unison [and using] their father's name,
מְבָרְכִים.
they bless Him.⁷

רָם לְרַצּוֹת
They seek to appease the Most High,
בִּדְבָרִים רַכִּים.
with tender words.
בִּזְכוּת הַתָּם
In the merit of the perfect one [Yaakov],
יָצִיץ מֵחֲרַכִּים.
may God look down from the heavens;
יָהּ יָאִיר עֵינֵי חֲשֵׁכִים.
and enlighten the eyes that are darkened.
מֶֽלֶךְ נִצָּב
The King stands
בַּעֲדַת בְּרוּכִים.
in the congregation of the blessed;
רוֹצֶה בְעַמּוֹ
He delights in His people.
יְפָאֵר נְמוּכִים.
He will adorn the humble,
דּוֹפְקִים
who knock [at His gates]
בִּתְפִלָּה
with prayers of penitence,
לְהַשְׁכִּים.
from early in the morning.
כְּטוֹב וְסַלָּח
With His goodness and pardon,
עִמָּם יַסְכִּים:
He agrees to their request.
חזן יַשְׁמִֽיעַ
May He cause them to hear—
לֹא תֵבֽשׁוּ דַכִּים.
“The downtrodden will not be ashamed.”
יֵאָמֵר לָכֵן
May this be said
לְבֵית הַמְּחַכִּים:
to those who wait hopefully.
יִמְלֹךְיְהֹוָה לְעוֹלָם
Adonoy will reign forever;
אֱלֹהַֽיִךְ צִיּוֹן
your God, Tziyon,
לְדֹר וָדֹר
throughout all generations!
הַלְלוּיָהּ:
Praise God.
וְאַתָּה קָדוֹשׁ
And You, Holy One,
יוֹשֵׁב תְּהִלּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל.
are enthroned upon the praises of Yisrael.
אֵל נָא:
Almighty, we beseech You.
אֱמוּנַת אוֹם נוֹטֶֽרֶת.
The people [Yisrael] who preserve its faith,
לְמַעַנְךָ עֲזֹר לְנִשְׁאֶֽרֶת.
for Your sake, help their remnant,
זַעֲקָהּ רְצֵה נָא כִקְטֹֽרֶת.
accept their cry as an incense-offering.
קָדוֹשׁ:
Holy One!
יְכַפֵּר וְיִסְלַח.
Atone and pardon
אֵל טוֹב
Almighty, Who is beneficent
וְסַלָּח.
and ready to pardon
נוֹרָא וְקָדוֹשׁ:
Awesome and Holy One!
תְּפִלָּתֵֽנוּ מִמְּעוֹנוֹת.
From the heavens, may our prayer
יְקַבֵּל כְּקָרְבָּנוֹת.
be accepted as sacrificial offerings
הָאֵל קָדוֹשׁ:
Almighty, Holy One.
מִיכָאֵל
[The angel] Michael
מִיָּמִין מְהַלֵּל.
[sings] praises at His right,
וְגַבְרִיאֵל מִשְּׂמֹאל מְמַלֵּל.
Gabriel acclaims at His left [saying]:
בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם אֵין כָּאֵל.
In heaven, there is none like the Almighty,
וּבָאָֽרֶץ
and on the earth
מִי כְּעַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל:
there is none like Your people Yisrael.”
וּבְכֵן שְׂרָפִים עוֹמְדִים מִמַּֽעַל לוֹ:
אֶרְאֶלֵּי הוֹד פּוֹצְחִים הִלּוּלוֹ. בְּרֶֽתֶת וְזִֽיעַ מְפָאֲרִים סִלְסוּלוֹ. גָּשִׁים וּבָאִים בְּשִׁנּוּן פִּלּוּלוֹ. שְׂרָפִים עוֹמְדִים מִמַּֽעַל לוֹ. מיכאל : דָּגוּל מֵרְבָבָה הוּא בְּלִי כַֽחַד. הַמַּבִּיט לָאָֽרֶץ וַתִּרְעַד וַתִּפְחַד. וּסְבִיבָיו סוּפָה וּסְעָרָה וָפַֽחַד (נ"א וְעִמּוֹ צְבָא הַמְשֵׁל וָפַֽחַד). שֵׁשׁ כְּנָפַֽיִם שֵׁשׁ כְּנָפַֽיִם לְאֶחָד: מיכאל זִקִּים וּבְרָקִים מַרְעִידִים לְפָנָיו. חֲרֵדִים לְהַרְעִיד בְּכָל פִּנָּיו. טָסִים בְּאַרְבַּע פִּנּוֹת פְּנִינָיו. בִּשְׁתַּֽיִם יְכַסֶּה פָנָיו. מיכאל : יְרֵאִים וַחֲרֵדִים גְּדוּדֵי חֲיָלָיו. כָּל מַלְאָכָיו וַחֲיָלֵי דְגָלָיו. לְמוּלוֹ יָרֽוּצוּ לְגַדְּלוֹ בְּשִׁכְלוּלָיו. וּבִשְׁתַּֽיִם יְכַסֶּה רַגְלָיו. מיכאל : מִיָּם וְעַד יָם בְּרֶֽגַע מְעוֹפֵף. נוֹרָא בְּלִי יְכוֹלִים לָשׁוּר וּלְצוֹפֵף. סְבִיבוֹת כִּסֵּא מִתְחוֹפֵף. וּבִשְׁתַּֽיִם יְעוֹפֵף: מיכאל עוֹרְכִים עִנְיַן עִזּוּזוֹ לוֹמַר. פְּאֵר פִּקּוּד פֶּֽלֶל לִגְמַר. צִפְצוּף צַֽהַל צֶֽדֶק כְּנֶֽאֱמַר. וְקָרָא זֶה אֶל זֶה וְאָמַר. מיכאל : קִלּוּס קְדֻשּׁוֹת קָדוֹשׁ קוֹרְאוֹת. רִבּוֹ רִבְבָן עֵינַֽיִם מְלֵאוֹת. שׁוֹכֵן עַד מַעֲרִיצִים בִּיצִיאוֹת. קָדוֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת. מיכאל : תַּקִּיף מֵרְבָבָה מְפָאֲרִים לְסַלְּדוֹ. תִּלֵּי תִּלִּים עוֹמְדִים לְכַבְּדוֹ. תֵּבֵל וְכָל דָּרֶֽיהָ מַקְדִּישִׁים הוֹדוֹ. מְלֹא כָל הָאָֽרֶץ כְּבוֹדוֹ.
חזן וקהל: מִיכָאֵל מִיָּמִין מְהַלֵּל. וְגַבְרִיאֵל מִשְּׂמֹאל מְמַלֵּל. בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם אֵין כָּאֵל. וּבָאָֽרֶץ מִי כְּעַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל:
וּבְכֵן וּלְךָ תַעֲלֶה קְדֻשָּׁה. כִּי אַתָּה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ מוֹחֵל וְסוֹלֵֽחַ:
כִּי רְכוּבוֹ בָּעֲרָבוֹת. וְעֻזּוֹ בַּשְּׁחָקִים. וּזְרוֹעוֹ בִּמְעוֹנוֹ. וְקִדּוּשׁוֹ בִּזְבוּל. וְאֵימָתוֹ בָּעֲרָפֶל. וּמוֹרָאוֹ בִּשְׁמֵי שָׁמַֽיִם. וְקַשְׁתּוֹ בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם. וְקוֹלוֹ עַל הַמַּֽיִם. וּמוֹשָׁבוֹ בְּרוּם. וּמַבָּטוֹ בְּתַֽחַת. מִמַּֽעְלָה קָדוֹשׁ. וּמִמַּֽטָּה בָּרוּךְ. מִמַּֽיִם אַדִּיר. וּמִנְּהָרוֹת קוֹל. וּמֵאֶֽרֶץ זֶֽמֶר. וּמֵעֵצִים רֶֽנֶן. וּמֵהָרִים רֶֽקֶד. וּמִגְּבָעוֹת שִׁיר. וּמִכָּל בְּרִיָּה תֹּֽקֶף. וּמִכָּל רֹאשׁ כֶּֽפֶף. וּמִכָּל עַֽיִן רֶֽמֶז. וּמִכָּל אֹֽזֶן שֶֽׁמַע. וּמִכָּל פֶּה הוֹדָיָה. וּמִכָּל לָשׁוֹן שֶֽׁבַח. וּמִכָּל גָּרוֹן רוֹן. וּמִכָּל לֵב רַֽחַשׁ. וּמִכָּל קֶֽרֶב הִגָּיוֹן. וּמִכָּל בֶּֽרֶךְ כְּרִיעָה. וּמִכָּל קוֹמָה הִשְׁתַּחֲוָיָה. וּמִזְּקֵנִים כָּבוֹד. וּמֵאֲנָשִׁים וְנָשִׁים שִׁיר. וּמִבַּחוּרִים וּבְתוּלוֹת הַלֵּל. וּמֵעוֹלְלִים וְיוֹנְקִים עֹז. וּמִדּוֹר לְדוֹר גְּבוּרָה. וּמֵעוֹלָם וְעַד עוֹלָם בְּרָכָה. כִּי כֻלָּם בָּרָֽאתָ לְמַעַנְךָ: חזן יִקְרְאוּ זֶה לָזֶה. וְיַעֲנוּ זֶה לָזֶה. וְיֹאמְרוּ זֶה לָזֶה. גּֽוּשׁוּ עֽוּשׁוּ חֽוּשׁוּ. וְנַעֲרִיץ לְמֶֽלֶךְ הַכָּבוֹד. הָאֵל הַנַּעֲרָץ וְהַנִּקְדָּשׁ בַּקֹּֽדֶשׁ:
כַּכָּתוּב
as it is written
עַל יַד נְבִיאֶךָ
by the hand of Your prophet,
וְקָרָא זֶה אֶל זֶה
“And they called one to another
וְאָמַר:
and said:
