"וכבשים ועזים", וכן "תורים ובני יונה" – לא בא שם המין בלשון יחיד מפני שהוא שם התואר כנ"ל. מה שאין כן בשם העצם, נאמר "ויהי לי שור וחמור צאן". (ויקרא ס' עז)
וכבשים ועזים (sheep and goats) and morevover תורים ובני יונה (turtledoves and young pigeons) – the name of these species do not come in singular, because they are adjectives, as it appears to me. Not so with a noun, as when it says ויהי לי שור וחמור צאן(And I have oxen, and asses and flocks)⁵⁸⁸.
When the Torah says וכבשים ועזים, the Malbim considers them to be adjectives for the noun צאן (flock). And when the Torah says תורים ובני יונה, the Malbim considers them to be adjectives for the noun עוף (bird)⁵⁸⁹.
