יש הבדל בין פעל שבת לבין הפעלים [חשך, מנע, חדל] הנרדפים עמו. שפעל 'שבת' מורה תמיד שמפסיק מן דבר שעסק בו עד עתה או שיתבטל עסק שהתמיד עד עתה במציאות. מה שאין כן פעלים האחרים יורו שמונע או חדל בעתיד. (ויקרא ס' קמה. בחוקתי סימן ח)
There is a difference between the verb שבת (rest) and the verbs חשך , מנע , חדל (stop) that are synonymous with it: The verb שבת always teaches that it is an interruption from a matter that one was occupied with until now or that the matter that one was occupied with until now was cancelled from existence. Not so for the other verbs, as they indicate preventing or ceasing in the future.
