שחין היא המכה ששית. אפו שלא היה שום אדם ובהמה במצרים שלא לקה בשחין שנא' והיה לאבק על כל ארץ מצרים באדם ובבהמה. והואיל וכל א' היה כואב בשלו לא יכול לחבש ולשים רטיה על מכות חברו.
שְׁחִין Shechin, boils is the sixth plague.
- אַפּ֗וֹ “His anger.” - There was no one in all of Egypt who was not plagued by boils, as Scripture states, “It shall become a fine dust all over the land of Egypt, and cause an inflammation breaking out in boils on man and beast throughout the land of Egypt.” (Ex. 9:9)¹⁵⁶ Each person writhed in pain so that he or she was unable to treat others or place bandages on his neighbor’s wounds.

עברה דרך השחין הוא להיות כמו חטטין שבנתק לבד. וזה היה גם כן בו אבעבועות.
- עֶבְרָ֣ה “Wrath” - It is the way of boils to only be an eruption on a scab. But these also included blisters.
וזעם כי נגד הטבע היה השחין הזה. והוא כי דרך האבעבועות הבאים מפני הגרב והילפת הוא שהאבעבוע נראה בעור הבשר. וכשמסירי' הליחה נראית הבשר החי כי הליחה אינה אלא רע מעופש שבין עור לבשר. וכאן אחרי שהיו מתחככים בצפורניהם על השחין היבש ומסירים הקליפה עליונה היו מוצאים תחתיה אבעבוע בלא ליחה. וזהו שאמר הכתוב שחין פורח אבעבועות. וכן אמרו בפרק מרובה אמר ר' יהושע בן לוי שחין שהביא הקב"ה על המצריים לח מבפני' ויבש מבחוץ שנ' ויהי שחין פורח אבעבועות.
- זַ֣עַם “Indignation.” The plague of boils was unnatural. Generally, boils result from itching and sores when scabs appear on one's flesh. Once you remove the secretions one finds fresh flesh. The inflammations are a result of infections which appear between the skin and the flesh. Here, however, when scratching with their nails on the dry scabs, and uncovering the outer layer , they would find scabs beneath it with secretions. This is what the sages say in Baba Kama Perek HaMirubeh (Ch. 7)*: “*R. Joshua ben Levi said: the boils that the Holy One, Blessed be He, brought upon the Egyptians were moist on the outside and dry on the inside, as it is stated: “And it became a boil breaking out with oozing upon man and upon beast” (Ex. 9:10)¹⁵⁷

וצרה לא יכלו החרטומי' לעמוד לפני משה. והבושה שנתביישו מפניו צרה גדולה היתה להם. והיינו דכתיב ולא יכלו החרטומים לעמוד לפני משה. וכי לפני משה לא היו יכולי' לעמוד אבל לפני פרעה יכולים לעמוד אלא יותר צער היו מצטערים שיהיה משה רואם ממה שהיו מפני השחין.
- צָרָ֑ה “Trouble” - The Egyptian magicians were unable to stand in Moses’ presence. While they couldn’t stand before Moses, they could stand before Pharaoh. But they felt even greater pain when Moses was present as a result of the boils.
משלחת מ"ר כי מה ששאר המכות משמשות שבעה ימים או שלש שבועות לדברי האומר מכה זו לא סרה מהם עד יום מותם. והיינו דכתיב גבי שחין אשר לא תוכל להרפא וכן אמרו בפרקי ר' אליעזר:
- מִ֝שְׁלַ֗חַת מַלְאֲכֵ֥י רָעִֽים “A band of deadly messengers” - While all the other plagues lasted seven days or three weeks, this plague never left them until they died. This is what is written regarding boils, that they were unable to heal them. It is also stated in Pirkei D’Rebbi Eliezer.
