ויאמרו איש אל רעהו (בראשית יא ג). מהו איש אל רעהו, כוש למצרים, [ומצרים לפוט], ופוט לכנען.

הבה נבנה לנו עיר (שם שם ד) אמר להם הקב"ה אתם אמרתם הבה, חייכם בו בלשון ארד עליכם, שנאמר הבה נרדה [ונבלה שם שפתם] (בראשית יא ז). אמר ר' חיא בר אבא לשלשה חלקים נחלק המגדל, שליש נבלע, ושליש נפל, ושליש עומד עד עכשיו, מי שעולה לראשו רואה התמרים של יריחו כחגבים הללו.
(Gen. 11:4:) COME, LET US BUILD OURSELVES A CITY.¹⁰⁵ 2. The Holy One said to them: You have said: COME. By your life, with that very word I will descend upon you. Thus it is stated (in Gen. 11:7): COME, LET US DESCEND [AND CONFOUND THEIR LANGUAGE THERE]. R. Hiyya bar Abba said: The tower was divided into three parts. A third was swallowed up, a third fell, and a third is standing even now.¹⁰⁶. 109a. One who ascends to its top sees the palms of Jericho looking like those locusts.
