ואתה תצוה וגו' ויקחו אליך [שמן זית זך], למה לא שמן אגוזים ולא שמן צנונות, אלא בשמן של זית, לפי שהשמן זית אורה לעולם.
(Exod. 27:20:) AND YOU SHALL COMMAND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL TO BRING UNTO YOU [CLEAR OIL OF BEATEN OLIVES]. Why neither nut oil nor radish oil but oil of olives? Because olive oil is light for the world.
שמן זית זך [כתית] למאור, בנוהג שבעולם אדם אם יש לו שמן רע מדליקו בנר, אבל היפה הוא נותנו בתבשיל, אבל בבית המקדש לא היו עושין כך, אלא שמן זית זך היו נותנין למאור, והשני לו היו נותנין למנחות, אמר דוד כי אתה נרי ה' וגו' (ש"ב כב כט).
(Exod. 27:20): CLEAR OIL OF [BEATEN] OLIVES. By universal custom, if one has bad oil, he burns it in a lamp; but the good oil he puts in cooked food. In the Temple, however, they do not do so. Rather they put clear olive oil into the lamp, and that which is second (in quality)¹³. 8:4; TMen. 9:6. they put into the meal offering. David said (in II Sam. 22:29): FOR YOU ARE MY LAMP, O LORD….
