Behold, days are coming when it shall no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ but rather, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought up and who led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all the countries where I had driven them’" (cf. Jeremiah 23:7-8). In the first chapter of Berakhot (12b), Ben Zoma said to the Sages: Will the Exodus from Egypt even be mentioned in the days of the Messiah? Does it not state, "Behold, days are coming, etc."? They replied to him: It is not that the Exodus from Egypt will be uprooted, but rather that the subjugation of the kingdoms will be primary and the Exodus from Egypt secondary to it. It is comparable to that which is stated (Genesis 35:10), "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name"—it is not that the name "Jacob" is uprooted from its place, but that the name "Israel" becomes primary and "Jacob" becomes secondary. And so it also says (Isaiah 43:18), "Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old." "Remember not the former things" refers to the subjugation of the kingdoms; "nor consider the things of old" refers to the Exodus from Egypt. "Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth" (ibid., 19)—Rav Yosef taught: this refers to the war of Gog and Magog. To what can this matter be compared? To a man who was walking on a road and was met by a wolf, and was saved from it, whereupon he went along recounting the story of the wolf. He was then met by a lion, and was saved from it, whereupon he went along recounting the story of the lion. He was then met by a snake, and was saved from it, whereupon he forgot the stories of the other two and went along recounting the story of the snake. So too it is with Israel: the later troubles cause the earlier ones to be forgotten. End of quote.
This is because every cause ought to be found present with its effect, for if it is not, it was not the true cause. If you see a cause that is not present with its effect, it is not a true cause. For example, when you see that the builder, who is the carpenter, is the cause of the house, yet he dies and the house remains; or if you see the father, who is the cause of the son, yet the father dies and the son remains, you should not say that the builder is the complete cause of the house, or that the father is the complete cause of the son. Do not say this, for the cause is that which must remain with its effect, because if it is the cause for its coming into being, it is also necessary for its continued existence. And when the house remains standing after the builder has died, this is because the builder was not the cause of the house's standing and of its endurance. For the builder was the cause only of the joining of the pieces of wood to one another and the placing of one upon the other, and when that cause is absent, the joining of the wood is no longer occurring. But the endurance of the house is due to itself, for the earth is its support. If so, the cause of the house’s standing is the earth. And this cause certainly does remain with its effect, and it is impossible to remove this cause and have the effect remain. Likewise, the father is not the cause of the son, but rather the father is the cause of the sowing of the seed, and this causality remains, for if there is no father, there is no sowing of the seed. But the cause that sustains the son is the nature that the Lord, may He be blessed, has given to him. For how could it be possible for the cause to give more than it possesses in itself? If the father were the cause of the son's endurance, then you would find that the father gives the son more than he himself has, for he would be giving endurance to the son even after the father himself has died, and his son would have life after the father’s death. This is impossible, for a thing cannot give that which is not found in it. Rather, the cause of his endurance is from another cause: the Lord, may He be blessed, who is the cause of all things, and there is no cause besides Him.
Therefore, the Sages maintain that there is a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt even in the days of the Messiah, for how could there not be a memory of the cause together with its effect? For from the spiritual level that Israel acquired when they left Egypt, they will acquire a still more supreme level, and if He had not taken us out of Egypt and taken Israel to Himself as a people, they would not have merited that supreme level that they will acquire in the future, for the Exodus from Egypt is the essential cause of the future redemption. This is why when Ben Zoma responded to the words of the Sages, asking, "Will the Exodus from Egypt be mentioned in the future? Does it not state, 'Behold, days are coming, etc.'?"—from which it could be proven that the Exodus from Egypt will not be recalled in the future—the Sages answered him that it is not that the Exodus will be primary, but rather that the subjugation of the kingdoms will be primary and the Exodus from Egypt secondary to it. All of this is because it is impossible for the effect to exist without the cause, and therefore it is fitting that along with the memory of the subjugation of the kingdoms, there should be a memory of the thing that is its cause, namely the Exodus from Egypt. This is also why the Talmud brings proof from the names "Jacob" and "Israel," for the name "Jacob" was not uprooted because the name "Jacob" is also the cause of the name "Israel." For the name "Jacob" is so called from the expression that Jacob made himself small like a heel (ekev), and there is nothing lowlier than the heel, and this very thing was the cause for the Lord, may He be blessed, elevating him until he was called "Israel," alluding to "you have striven with God and with men" (Genesis 32:28), for "whoever abases himself, the Holy One, blessed be He, elevates him" (Eruvin 13b). For this reason, Israel is also called by these two names, because it is for the reason that they make themselves small that the Holy One, blessed be He, elevates them. And due to this, these two redemptions are joined together as if they were a single redemption.
And because we have explained in the work Gevurot Hashem the matter of the redemption from Egypt, it is fitting to join with it the final redemption. And this work shall be called by its name, Netzach Yisrael (The Eternity of Israel), the reason for which was explained above at the beginning of the work Gevurot Hashem. For in this work, it will be explained that the Lord, may He be blessed, has given to Israel eternity, and they will not, Heaven forfend, perish in their difficult and heavy exile. It will also be explained that the Lord, may He be blessed, possesses Victory, in that He will vanquish the fourth kingdom which holds dominion, as it is written (Obadiah 1:21), “And saviors shall ascend Mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” Amen, so may it be His will, speedily in our days.
