Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Make for yourself two silver trumpets; you shall make them, beaten [from one block], and they shall be used by you to summon the congregation and to initiate the departure of the camps.

Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou shalt use them for calling the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.

Make for yourself [i.e., from what is yours] two trumpets of silver; beaten work (from a block of silver) shall you make them. And they shall be for you for convoking the congregation [the Sanhedrin and the rest of the people] and for the [signaling of the] traveling of the camps.

When they will blow them, the entire congregation shall present itself to you at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

And when they [the Cohanim] blow [tekiah] with [both of] them, then all the congregation shall gather unto you, to the door of the tent of meeting.

But if they blow one of them, the leaders shall present themselves to you, the heads of Israel’s thousands.

And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Yisra᾽el, shall gather themselves to thee.

And if they blow with one, there shall gather unto you [at the door of the tent of meeting], the chiefs, the heads of the thousands of Israel.

When you blow a teruah; the camps that are camped eastward shall travel.

When you blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.

And when you blow a teruah (tremolo), [in sum: tekiah, teruah, tekiah] then there shall travel the eastern encampments.

If you blow a second teruah, then shall travel the camps that are camped on the south side. They shall blow a teruah for their journeys.

When you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

And when you blow a second teruah then there shall travel the southern encampments; a teruah shall they blow for their travels.

But when gathering the congregation, you shall blow [a blast], but not a teruah.

But when the congregation is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but you shall not sound an alarm.

And when the assembly is to be gathered you shall blow a tekiah (an extended blast), but not a teruah. [In sum: convoking of the congregation, with two trumpets; convoking of the chiefs, with one. In both instances, no teruah. Traveling of the camps, with two trumpets, teruah and tekiah.]

The sons of Aharon, the kohanim, shall sound the trumpets. This shall be for you an everlasting statute, for all your descendants.

And the sons of Aharon, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.

And the sons of Aaron the Cohanim shall blow on the trumpets [for these convocations and travels], and they shall be to you for a statute forever throughout your generations.

If war shall come into your land against the oppresor who oppresses you and you shall blow teruahs with the trumpets and you will be remembered before Adonoy, your God, and you will be delivered from you enemies.

And if you go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresses you, then you shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and you shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.

And when you go to war in your land against the oppressor who oppresses you, then you shall sound the trumpets and you will be remembered before the L-rd your G-d, and you will be saved from your enemies.

On your joyous days and on your festivals and on the beginnings of your months you shall blow with the trumpets for your burnt-offerings and for your peace-offerings; and it shall be a remembrance for you before your God, I am Adonoy your God.

Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the Lord your God.

And on the day of your rejoicing and on your appointed times, and on your new moons, you shall sound the trumpets [( — whence is derived "shofaroth" (on Rosh Hashanah)] over your [communal] burnt-offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace-offerings. And they shall be to you for a remembrance (zikkaron) [( — whence is derived "zichronoth")] before your G-d. I am the L-rd your G-d [( — whence is derived "malchuyoth" (melech = king)].

It was in the second year, in the second month on the twentieth of the month that the Cloud rose up from above the Mishkon of the Testimony.

And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the Testimony.

And it was, in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud departed from over the mishkan of the Testimony [(Israel was in Chorev, then, twelve months less ten days.)]

Bnei Yisroel traveled along on their journeys, from the Sinai desert, and the Cloud came to rest in the desert of Paran.

And the children of Yisra᾽el took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinay; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.

And Israel embarked on their travels from the desert of Sinai [in the order of their standards, as prescribed], and the cloud came to rest in the desert of Paran [in Kivroth Hata'avah (12:34)].

This was the first time that they traveled, on the order of Adonoy, through Moshe.

And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moshe.

They traveled for the first time by word of the L-rd, at the hand of Moses.

Then traveled the banner of the sons of Yehudah’s camp in the forefront according to their divisions; in charge of its divisions [was] Nachshon the son of Aminadav.

In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Yehuda according to their armies: and over his host was Naĥshon the son of ῾Amminadav.

The standard of the camp of the children of Yehudah traveled first, according to their hosts. And over his host, Nachshon ben Aminadav.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Yissachar, [was] Nesanel the son of Tzu’ar.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Yissakhar was Netan᾽el the son of Żu῾ar.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Yissachar, Nethanel ben Tzuar.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Zevulun, [was] Eliav the son of Cheilon.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zevulun was Eli᾽av the son of Ḥelon.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zevulun, Eliyav ben Cheilon.

[Then] the Mishkon was dismantled and the sons of Gershon traveled, with the sons of Merori, those who carried the Mishkon.

And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle.

And when the mishkan was taken down, there set forth the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, the bearers of the mishkan. [When the standard of Yehudah set forth, Aaron and his sons entered and removed the parocheth and covered the ark with it. Then the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari dismantled the mishkan and loaded it in wagons. The ark and holy vessels to be borne by the children of Kehath stood covered and readied on staves until the standard of the camp of Reuven set forth, whereupon (21): "And the Kehathim set forth."]

[Then] the banner of Reuven’s camp traveled, according to their divisions. In charge of its division [was] Elitzur the son of Shdeiur.

And the standard of the camp of Re᾽uven set forward according to their armies: over his host was Eliżur the son of Shede᾽ur.

And the standard of the camp of Reuven set forth according to their hosts; and over his host, Elitzur ben Shedeur.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Shimon, [was] Shlumiel the son of Tzurishadai.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Shim῾on was Shelumi᾽el the son of Żurishadday.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Shimon, Shelumiel ben Tzurishadai.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Gad, [was] Elyasaf the son of De’uel.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Elyasaf the son of De῾u᾽el.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad, Elyasaf ben De'uel.

[Then] the Kehos family traveled, the carriers of the sacred, and they erected the Mishkon by the time of their arrival.

And the Qehati set forward, bearing the sanctuary: that they might set up the tabernacle against their arrival.

And the Kehathim set forth, the bearers of the holy things, and they [the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari (when they saw the signal for encamping on the standard of the camp of Yehudah)], set up the mishkan [so that it was ready to receive the ark, the table, the menorah, and the altars], by the time they [the sons of Kehath (who were traveling two standards behind)] arrived.

[Then] the banner of the sons of Ephraim’s camp traveled according to their divisions. In charge of its division, [was] Elishamah the son of Amihud.

And the standard of the camp of the children of Efrayim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of ῾Ammihud.

And the standard of the children of Ephraim set forth according to their hosts; and over his host, Elishama ben Amihud.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Menashe, [was] Gamliel the son of Pedahtzur.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Menashshe was Gamli᾽el the son of Pedażur.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Menasheh, Gamliel ben Pedatzur.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Binyamin, [was] Avidan the son of Gid’oni.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Binyamin was Avidan the son of Gid῾oni.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Binyamin, Avidan ben Gidoni.

[Then] the banner of the sons of Don’s camp traveled; the gatherer for all the camps, according to their divisions. In charge of its division, [was] Achiezer the son of Amishadai.

And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rearward of all the camps throughout their hosts: and over his host was Aĥi῾ezer the son of ῾Ammishadday.

And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forth, the rearward of all the camps, according to their hosts; and over his host, Achiezer ben Amishadai.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Asher, [was] Pagiel the son of Ochran.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pag῾i᾽el the son of ῾Okhran.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher, Pagiel ben Achran.

In charge of the division of the tribe of the sons of Naftali, [was] Achirah the son of Einan.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naftali was Aĥira the son of ῾Enan.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naftali, Achira ben Einan.

These are the journeys of Bnei Yisroel according to their divisions; and they journeyed.

Thus were the journeyings of the children of Yisra᾽el according to their armies; then they set forward.

This is the traveling order of the children of Israel according to their hosts. And [on that day (11)] they set forth.

Moshe said to Chovav the son of Reuel, the Midianite, Moshe’s father-in-law: “We are journeying to the place about which Adonoy said; ‘I will give it to you’, come along with us and we will treat you well, for Adonoy spoke of bringing good [fortune] on Israel.”

And Moshe said to Ḥovav, the son of Re῾u᾽el, the Midyanite, Moshe’s father in law, We are journeying to the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord has spoken good concerning Yisra᾽el.

And Moses said to Chovav [Yithro] the son of Reuel the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses: We are journeying to the place of which the L-rd said: It will I give to you [(Within three days we will enter the land)]. Come with us and we will do good with you, for the L-rd has spoken (the doing of) good for Israel.

He said to him “I will not go, but rather to my land and to my birthplace will I go.”

And he said to him, I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my kindred.

And he said to him: I will not go; but to my land, [for the sake of my possessions] and to my kindred, [for the sake of my family], I will go.

He said to him “please do not forsake us, for, because you know of our encampment in the desert, and you will be our eyes.

And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; since thou knowst how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayst be to us instead of eyes.

And he said: I pray you, do not leave us, [so that it not be said that you became a proselyte only in expectation of a portion in the land, which, seeing not to be forthcoming, you abandoned us.] [Indeed, it becomes you to remain with us] inasmuch as you have known our camping in the desert [and have seen the miracles and wonders wrought for us], and you have been "eyes" for us.

It will be, that when you go with us, it shall be that the very good which Adonoy will bestow on us we will bestow on (share with) you.

And it shall be, if thou go with us, it shall be, that what good the Lord shall do to us, the same will we do to thee.

And it shall be, if you go with us, that good which the L-rd will accord to us, we shall accord to you. [(The children of Yithro were given the choicest land of Jericho as a holding until it reverted to the tribe of Binyamin.)]

They traveled from the mountain of Adonoy a journey of three days, and the Ark of the Covenant of Adonoy traveled in front of them a journey of three days, to prepare for them a place to settle.

And they departed from the mountain of the Lord three days’ journey: and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them in the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them.

And they traveled from the mountain of the L-rd, a journey of three days. [They traveled a three-days distance in one day, the Holy One Blessed be He desiring to bring them immediately into the land.] And the ark of the covenant of the L-rd [the ark with the broken tablets, which went out with them to war)] preceded them, a distance of three days, to look out a resting place for them.

The Cloud of Adonoy was above them by day when they traveled from the camp.

And the cloud of the Lord was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.

And the cloud of the L-rd was above them by day when they set forth from the encampment.

Whenever the Ark departed Moshe woud say: “Rise, Adonoy, and may Your enemies disperse, and those who hate You flee before You.”

And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moshe said, Rise up, Lord, and let thy enemies be scattered; and let those who hate thee flee before thee.

[There are signs (inverted nuns) before (this verse) and after (the next verse) to indicate that this is not where these verses actually belong; they were inserted here to create a hiatus between one misfortune and another (see Shabbath 116a)] and it was, when the ark traveled that Moses said: "Stand [and wait for us (the ark preceding them a three-days distance)], O L-rd, and let Your foes [Your massed foes] be scattered, and let Your haters [the enemies of Israel (those in pursuit)] flee before You."

When it rested, he would say: “Come to rest, Adonoy, among the myriads and thousands of Israel.”

And when it rested, he said, Return, Lord, to the ten thousand thousands of Yisra᾽el.

And when it came to rest, he said: "Rest, O L-rd, upon the [two] ten thousands [and two] thousands of Israel," [the Shechinah not resting in Israel upon fewer than twenty-two thousand.]
