It was after the plague. Adonoy spoke to Moshe and Elozor, son of Aharon the kohein, saying:

And it came to pass after the plague, that the Lord spoke to Moshe and to El῾azar the son of Aharon the priest, saying,

And it was, after the plague, ["the Shepherd counting his surviving sheep after the wolf raid"], that the L-rd said to Moses and to Elazar the son of Aaron the Cohein, saying:

“ count the whole community of Bnei Yisroel twenty years of age and above, according to their paternal house, every one who is fit for duty in the army of Yisroel.”

Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ house, all that are able to go to war in Yisra᾽el.

Take the count of the entire congregation of the children of Israel from twenty years and above by their fathers' house [(the tribes being reckoned according to the fathers and not according to the mothers)], all who go to war in Israel.

Moshe and Elozor the kohein spoke with them on the plains of Moav, by the Yardein near Yereicho, saying:

And Moshe and El῾azar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Mo᾽av by the Yarden near Yereĥo, saying,

And Moses and Elazar the Cohein spoke with them [of G-d's having commanded to count them], in the plains of Moav by the Jordan (near) Jericho, saying:

“[Count those] twenty years of age and above, as Adonoy commanded Moshe and Bnei Yisroel who had left Egypt.”

Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the Lord commanded Moshe and the children of Yisra᾽el, who went forth out of the land of Miżrayim.

[You must be counted] from twenty years and above, as the L-rd commanded Moses and the children of Israel who went out of the land of Egypt [to be counted thus (Exodus 30:14)].

Reuvein, [was] Yisroel’s firstborn; the descendants of Reuvein are: the Chanochite family from Chanoch, the Paluite family from Palu,

Re᾽uven, the eldest son of Yisra᾽el: the children of Re᾽uven; Ḥanokh, the family of the Ḥanokhi: of Pallu, the family of the Pallu᾽i.

Reuven, the first-born of Israel, the sons of Reuven: Chanoch, the family of the Chanochi (hachanochi) [All of the family names are similarly structured (with the heh and the yod), intimating (Psalms 122:4): "The tribes of Kah ('the L-rd') testimony to Israel" — G-d Himself testifying to the (tribal) paternity of Israel (in rebuttal to those who would cast doubt upon it in view of their having been enslaved by the Egyptians)]; Falu, the family of the Palui,

the Chetzronite family from Chetzron and the Karmite family from Karmi.

Of Ḥeżron, the family of the Ḥeżroni: of Karmi, the family of the Karmi.

Chetzron, the family of the Chetzroni; Karmi, the family of the Karmi.

These are Reuvein’s families and they numbered forty-three thousand, and seven hundred and thirty.

These are the families of the Re᾽uveni: and they that were numbered of them were forty three thousand, seven hundred and thirty.

These are the families of the Reuveni. And their number was forty-three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.

Palu’s son[s were] was Eliav.

And the sons of Pallu; Eli᾽av.

And the sons of Falu, Eliav.

Eliav’s sons were Nemueil, Dasan and Aviram. They are Dasan and Aviram, the communal leaders, who incited against Moshe and Aharon in the assembly of Korach when they incited against Adonoy.

And the sons of Eli᾽av; Nemu᾽el, and Datan, and Aviram. This is that Datan and Aviram, who were regularly summoned to the congregation, who strove against Moshe and against Aharon in the company of Qoraĥ, when they strove against the Lord:

And the sons of Eliav: Nemuel and Dathan and Aviram. This is the Dathan and Aviram, the "called" of the congregation [see 1:16], who incited [Israel] against Moses and Aaron in the congregation of Korach when they incited [Israel] against the L-rd.

The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korach when that assembly died; when fire consumed the two hundred and fifty men; they became a symbol.

and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Qoraĥ, when that company died, at which time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men: and they became a sign.

And the earth opened its mouth and it swallowed them and Korach in the death of the congregation (of Korach) when the fire consumed the two hundred and fifty men, and they became a sign [for G-d's having established the priesthood (with Aaron and his sons)].

But the sons of Korach did not die.

But the children of Qoraĥ died not.

And the sons of Korach did not die [(Though in the plot at the outset, they repented in their hearts, so that a high place was bastioned for them in Gehinnom, where they abided.)]

The descendants of Shimon by their families are: the Nemuelite family from Nemuel, the Yaminite family from Yamin, the Yachinite family from Yachin,

The sons of Yehudah are Eir and Onan; Eir and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

The sons of Yehuda were ῾Er and Onan: and ῾Er and Onan died in the land of Kena῾an.

The sons of Yehudah, Er and Onan. And Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

The descendants of Yehudah by their families are: The Sheilanite family from Sheila, the Partzite family from Peretz, the Zarchite family from Zerach.

The descendants of Yoseif by their families are: Menashe and Ephraim.

The sons of Yosef after their families, Menashshe and Efrayim.

The sons of Joseph, according to their families: Menasheh and Ephraim.

The descendants of Menashe are: The Machirite family from Machir; Machir’s son was Gil’ad, the Gil’adite family from Gil’ad.

Of the sons of Menashshe: of Makhir, the family of the Makhiri: and Makhir begot Gil῾ad: of Gil῾ad come the family of the Gil῾adi.

The sons of Menasheh: Machir, the family of the Machiri, and Machir begot Gilad; Gilad, the family of the Giladi [(this family being mentioned separately, being exceptionally large)].

The descendants of Gil’ad are: The I’ezerite family from I’ezer, the Chelkite family from Cheilek,

Tzelofchad the son of Cheifer had no sons, only daughters; The name[s] of Tzelofchad’s daughters were Machlah, No’ah, Choglah, Milkah and Sirtzah.

And Żelofĥad the son of Ḥefer had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Żelofĥad were Maĥla, and No῾a, Ḥogla, Milka and Tirża.

And Tzelafchad the son of Chefer did not have sons but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Tzelafchad: Machlah, Noah, Chaglah, Milkah, and Tirtzah.

These are the families of Menashe and they numbered fifty-two thousand and seven hundred.

The descendants of Ephraim by their families are: The Shusalchite family from Shuselach, the Bachrite family from Becher, and the Tachanite family from Tachan.

These are the sons of Efrayim after their families: of Shutelaĥ, the family of the Shutalĥi: of Bekher, the family of the Bakhri: of Taĥan, the family of the Taĥani.

These are the sons of Ephraim, according to their families: Shuthelach, the family of the Shuthalchi; Becher, the family of the Bachri; Tachan, the family of the Tachani.

These are the sons of Shuselach: The Eiranite family from Eiran.

And these are the sons of Shutelaĥ: of ῾Eran, the family of the ῾Erani.

And these are the sons of Shuthalach: Eran, the family of the Erani [The offspring of the other sons of Shuthelach were called by his name. Because the family of Eran was exceptionally large, they are called by his name.]

These are the families of Ephraim’s descendants, and they numbered thirty-two thousand and five hundred; these are the descendants of Yoseif by their families.

These are the families of the sons of Efrayim according to those that were numbered of them, thirty two thousand five hundred. These are the sons of Yosef after their families.

These are the families of the sons of Ephraim by their numbers, thirty-two thousand and five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph according to their families.

The descendants of Binyamin by their families were: The Balite family from Bela, the Ashbelite family from Ashbeil, the Achiramite family from Achiram,

The sons of Binyamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Bal῾i: of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbeli: of Aĥiram, the family of the Aĥirami:

The sons of Binyamin, according to their families: Bela, the family of the Bal'i; Ashbel, the family of the Ashbeli; Achiram, the family of the Achirami [Achiram is the same as Echi (Genesis 46:21). Because he was named after Joseph, Binyamin's brother, he was called "Achi (my brother) ram" (high, i.e., greater than I)].

the Shufamite family from Shfufam, and the Chufamite family from Chufam.

of Shefufam, the family of the Shufami: of Ḥufam, the family of the Ḥufami.

Shefufam, the family of the Shufami [the same as Mupim (Genesis 46:21), Joseph being downtrodden (shafuf) by the peoples], Chufam, the family of the Chufami.

The sons of Bela were Ard and Na’aman [giving rise to] the Ardite family, and the Na’amite family from Na’aman.

And the sons of Bela were Ard and Na῾aman: of Ard, the family of the Ardi: and of Na῾aman, the family of the Na῾ami.

And the sons of Bela were Ard and Na'aman, the family of the Ardi; Na'aman, the family of the Na'ami.

These are the descendants of Binyamin by their families, and they numbered forty-five thousand and six hundred.

These are the sons of Binyamin according to their families; and their numbered ones, forty-five thousand and six hundred.

These are the descendants of Don by their families: The Shuchamite family from Shucham, these are Don’s families.

These are the sons of Dan after their families: of Shuĥam, the family of the Shuĥami. These are the families of Dan after their families.

These are the sons of Dan according to their families: Shucham, [the same as Chushim (Genesis 46:23)], the family of the Shuchami. These are the families of Dan by their families.

All Shuchamite families numbered sixty-four thousand and four hundred.

All the families of the Shuĥami, according to those that were numbered of them, were sixty four thousand, four hundred.

All the families of the Shuchami by their numbered ones, sixty-four thousand and four hundred.

The descendants of Asher by their families are: The Yimnite family from Yimnah, the Yishvite family from Yishvi, [and] the Bri’ite family from Briah.

Of the children of Asher after their families: of Yimna the family of the Yimna: of Yishvi, the family of the Yishvi: of Beri῾a, the family of the Beri῾i.

The sons of Asher, according to their families: Yimnah, the family of the Yimnah; Yishvi, the family of the Yishvi; Beriah, the family of the Beri'i.

The descendants of Briah are: The Chevronite family from Chever, the Malkieilite family from Malkieil.

Of the sons of Beri῾a: of Ḥever, the family of the Ḥevri: of Malki᾽el, the family of the Malki᾽eli.

The sons of Beriah: Chever, the family of the Chevri; Malkiel, the family of the Malkieli.

The name of Asher’s daughter was Serach.

And the name of the daughter of Asher was Seraĥ.

And the name of the daughter of Asher was Sarach [(Because she was still alive, she is mentioned here)].

These are the families of Asher and they numbered fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

These are the families of the sons of Asher according to those that were numbered of them; who were fifty three thousand, four hundred.

These are the families of the sons of Asher by their numbered ones, fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

The descendants of Naftali by their families are: the Yachtze’eilite family from Yachtze’eil, the Gunite family from Guni,

The total number of Bnei Yisroel was six hundred and one thousand, seven hundred and thirty.

These were the numbered of the children of Yisra᾽el, six hundred and one thousand, seven hundred and thirty.

These are the numbered ones of the children of Israel, six hundred and one thousand and seven hundred and thirty.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe saying.

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

“The land shall be apportioned among these, as an inheritance according to the number of names.

To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.

To these shall the land be apportioned, [and not to those younger than twenty, even if they reached that age by the time of the division of the land], as an inheritance according to the number of names.

To the large [tribe], increase their inheritance, and to the small, diminish their inheritance; each person, according to his number, shall be given his inheritance.

To the more numerous thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to the fewer thou shalt give the less inheritance: to everyone shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.

To the [more] numerous [tribe] you shall increase its inheritance [i.e., you shall give it a larger portion], and to the less [numerous] you shall decrease its inheritance. To each, according to his numbers shall his inheritance be given.

Only by lot should the land be divided, according to the names of their fathers’ tribes should they inherit it.

Nevertheless the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.

Only [(excluding Joshua and Calev, who received special portions)] by lot shall the land be divided, [the lot actually calling out the correct division through the Holy Spirit.] By the names of the tribes of their fathers [(proselytes and slaves hereby excluded), who came out of Egypt] shall they inherit [e.g., If two brothers who left Egypt had sons entering the land — the first, one son; the second, three — (the one son takes one portion; the three, three (as per verse 53), after which their portions revert to their fathers' father (as per verse 55), so that they (the two fathers) divide (four portions) equally.]

By word of the lottery should their inheritance be divided, with regard to whether they are many or few.”

According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between many and few.

By the word of the lot [("word," literally, see above)] shall its inheritance be divided between the many and the few.

These are the numbered ones of the Levites by their families: The Gershonite family of Gershon, the Kehosite family of Kehos, [and] the Merorite family of Merori.

And these are they that were numbered of the Levi after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershoni: of Qehat, the family of the Qehati: of Merari, the family of the Merari.

And these are the numbered of the Levites, according to their families: Gershon, the family of the Gershuni; Kehath, the family of the Kehathi; Merari, the family of the Merari.

These are the families of Levi: the Livnite family, the Chevronite family, the Machlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korchite family; Kehos’ son was Amram.

These are the families of Levi: the family of the Livni, the family of the Ḥevroni, the family of the Maĥli, the family of the Mushi, the family of the Qorĥi. And Qehat begot ῾Amram.

These are the families of Levi [see Exodus 16-19]: the family of the Livni, the family of the Chevroni, the family of the Machli, the family of the Mushi, the family of the Karchi; and Kehath begot Amram.

The name of Amram’s wife was Yocheved, daughter of Levi, whom [her mother] bore to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram, Aharon, Moshe, and their sister Miriam.

And the name of ῾Amram’s wife was Yokheved, daughter of Levi, whom her mother bore to Levi in Miżrayim: and she bore to ῾Amram Aharon and Moshe, and Miryam their sister.

And the name of the wife of Amram was Yocheved the daughter of Levi, who (i.e., whose wife) bore her to Levi in Egypt, [just as they entered Egypt (so that she makes up the complement of the "seventy souls" who entered Egypt (Genesis 46:27)]. And she bore to Amram: Aaron and Moses, and Miriam, their sister.

To Aharon were borne, Nadav and Avihu, Elozor and Isamar.

And to Aharon was born Nadav, and Avihu, El῾azar and Itamar.

And there was born to Aaron: Nadav and Avihu, Elazar and Ithamar.

Nadav and Avihu died when they offered a forbidden fire before Adonoy.

And Nadav and Avihu died, when they offered strange fire before the Lord.

And Nadav and Avihu died when they offered strange fire before the L-rd.

They numbered twenty-three thousand, for all males from one month and older. They were not counted among Bnei Yisroel, since no inheritance was given to them among Bnei Yisroel.

And those that were numbered of them were twenty three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Yisra᾽el, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Yisra᾽el.

And their (the Levites') numbered ones were twenty-three thousand, every male from one month and above. For they were not numbered in the midst of the children of Israel [from the age of twenty]; for an inheritance was not given them [as it was to all those over twenty] in the midst of the children of Israel.

This is the census of Moshe and Elozor the kohein who counted the Bnei Yisroel in the plains of Moav, at Yardein Yereicho.

These are they that were numbered by Moshe and El῾azar the priest, who numbered the children of Yisra᾽el in the plains of Mo᾽av by Yarden near Yereĥo.

These are the numbered ones of Moses and Elazar the Cohein, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moav by the Jordan (near) Jericho.

Among this [census] there was no man who had been included in the census of Moshe and Aharon the kohein, who had counted Bnei Yisroel in the wilderness of Sinai,

But among these there was not a man of them whom Moshe and Aharon the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Yisra᾽el in the wilderness of Sinay.

And among these there was not a man of those that had been counted by Moses and Aaron the Cohein, who had counted the children of Israel in the desert of Sinai. [(But the decree of the spies had not gone forth against the women, who, unlike the men, who wished to return to Egypt, desired a holding in the land (for which reason the episode of the daughters of Tzelafchad follows)].

because Adonoy said to them that they would die in the desert. No one was left with the exception of Kaleiv, son of Yefuneh and Yehoshua, son of Nun.

For the Lord had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, except Kalev the son of Yefunne, and Yehoshua the son of Nun.

For the L-rd had said to them: They will surely die in the desert. And there was left not a man of them except Calev the son of Yefuneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
