Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

He [God] had said to Moshe, ‘Go up to [the Presence of] [before] Adonoy, you, Aharon, Nadav, Avihu, and seventy of the elders of [the B’nei] Yisrael, and prostrate yourselves at a distance.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe alone shall approach [the Presence of] [before] Adonoy, but they must not approach, and the people must not go up with him.”

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe came and told the people all the words of Adonoy, and all the laws. The people responded with one voice and said, “All the words that Adonoy has spoken, we will do.”

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe wrote down all the words of Adonoy. He arose early in the morning, and built an altar beneath [at the foot of] the mountain, and [also] twelve monuments [pillars] for the twelve tribes of [the B’nei] Yisrael.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

He sent the youths [first-born] of B’nei Yisrael and they offered burnt-offerings, and sacrificed oxen as peace-offerings to [before] Adonoy.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe took half the blood and put it in the basins, and [the other] half the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

He then took the Book of the Covenant, and read it in the ears of [before] the people. They said, “All that Adonoy has spoken, we will do and we will listen [obey].”

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe then took the blood and cast it on the [Altar to atone on behalf of the] people, and he said, “Behold, this is the blood of the covenant which Adonoy has made with you regarding all these words.”

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe and Aharon then went up along with Nadav and Avihu, and seventy of the elders of [the B’nei] Yisrael.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

They saw [a vision of] the [Glory of the] God of Yisrael, and under His feet [the throne of His Glory] [there was something] like a brickwork of sapphire [precious stone], and it was like the essence [image] of heaven in purity.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

But against the nobility of the B’nei Yisrael, He [God] did not send His hand [there was no damage]. They envisioned [saw the Glory of] God, and they [rejoiced in their sacrifices which were accepted graciously as if they] ate and drank.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Adonoy then said to Moshe, “Come up to [before] Me to the mountain and remain there. I will give you the tablets of stone, the Torah and the commandment, which I have written [in order] to teach them.”

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe and Yehoshua, his attendant, set out, but [only] Moshe went up to the mountain [upon which the Glory] of God [was revealed].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

He [Moshe] said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you, and Aharon and Chur will be with you. Whoever has a claim can approach [before] them.”

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

Moshe went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

The glory of Adonoy rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day, He called to Moshe from the midst of the cloud.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

The appearance of Adonoy’s glory was like [the appearance of] a consuming flame at the top to the mountain; before the eyes of the B’nei Yisrael.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009 [with Onkelos translation]

And Moshe came into the midst of the cloud. and went up into the mountain. Moshe remained on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.
