וַהֲוָה בָּתַר מוֹתָנָא וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה וּלְאֶלְעָזָר בַּר אַהֲרֹן כַּהֲנָא לְמֵימָר:

It was after the plague. Adonoy spoke to Moshe and Elozor, son of Aharon the kohein, saying:

קַבִּילוּ יָת חֻשְׁבַּן כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִבַּר עַשְׂרִין שְׁנִין וּלְעֵלָּא לְבֵית אֲבָהַתְהוֹן כָּל נָפֵק חֵילָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל:

“[Take the] count [of] the whole community of Bnei Yisroel twenty years of age and above, according to their paternal house, every one who is fit for duty in the army of Yisroel.”

וּמַלִּיל משֶׁה וְאֶלְעָזָר כַּהֲנָא אֲמָרוּ לְמִמְנֵי יָתְהוֹן בְּמֵישְׁרַיָּא דְמוֹאָב עַל יַרְדֵּנָא דִירֵחוֹ לְמֵימָר:

Moshe and Elozor the kohein spoke with [to count] them on the plains of Moav, by the Yardein near Yereicho, saying:

מִבַּר עַשְׂרִין שְׁנִין וּלְעֵלָּא כְּמָא דִי פַקִּיד יְיָ יָת משֶׁה וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל דִּי נְפָקוּ מֵאַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:

“[Count those] twenty years of age and above, as Adonoy commanded Moshe and Bnei Yisroel who had left Egypt.”

רְאוּבֵן בּוּכְרָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן חֲנוֹךְ זַרְעִית חֲנוֹךְ לְפַלּוּא זַרְעִית פַּלּוּא:

Reuvein, [was] Yisroel’s firstborn; the descendants of Reuvein are: the Chanochite family from Chanoch, the Paluite family from Palu,

אִלֵּין זַרְעֲיַת רְאוּבֵן וַהֲווֹ מִנְיָנֵיהוֹן אַרְבְּעִין וּתְלָתָא אַלְפִין וּשְׁבַע מְאָה וּתְלָתִין:

These are Reuvein’s families and they numbered forty-three thousand, and seven hundred and thirty.

וּבְנֵי פַלּוּא אֱלִיאָב:

Palu’s son[s were] was Eliav.

וּבְנֵי אֱלִיאָב נְמוּאֵל וְדָתָן וַאֲבִירָם הוּא דָתָן וַאֲבִירָם מְעַרְעֵי כְנִשְׁתָּא דְּאִתְכְּנָשׁוּ עַל משֶׁה וְעַל אַהֲרֹן בִּכְנִשְׁתָּא דְקֹרַח בְּאִתְכַּנּוֹשֵׁיהוֹן עַל יְיָ:

Eliav’s sons were Nemueil, Dasan and Aviram. They are Dasan and Aviram, the communal leaders, who incited against Moshe and Aharon in the assembly of Korach when they incited against Adonoy.

וּפְתָחַת אַרְעָא יָת פּוּמָהּ וּבְלָעַת יָתְהוֹן וְיָת קֹרַח בְּמוֹתָא דִכְנִשְׁתָּא כַּד אֲכָלַת אֶשָּׁתָא יָת מָאתָן וְחַמְשִׁין גַּבְרָא וַהֲווֹ לְאָת:

The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korach when that assembly died; when fire consumed the two hundred and fifty men; they became a symbol.

וּבְנֵי קֹרַח לָא מִיתוּ:

But the sons of Korach did not die.

בְּנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן לְזַרְעֲיַתְהוֹן לִנְמוּאֵל זַרְעִית נְמוּאֵל לְיָמִין זַרְעִית יָמִין לְיָכִין זַרְעִית יָכִין:

The descendants of Shimon by their families are: the Nemuelite family from Nemuel, the Yaminite family from Yamin, the Yachinite family from Yachin,

These are the families of Shimon—twenty- two thousand and two hundred.

These are the families of Gad’s descendants and they numbered forty thousand and five hundred.

בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה עֵר וְאוֹנָן וּמִית עֵר וְאוֹנָן בְּאַרְעָא דִכְנָעַן:

The sons of Yehudah are Eir and Onan; Eir and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

The descendants of Yehudah by their families are: The Sheilanite family from Sheila, the Partzite family from Peretz, the Zarchite family from Zerach.

וַהֲווֹ בְנֵי פֶרֶץ לְחֶצְרוֹן זַרְעִית חֶצְרוֹן לְחָמוּל זַרְעִית חָמוּל:

וּצְלָפְחָד בַּר חֵפֶר לָא הֲווֹ לֵיהּ בְּנִין אֶלָּהֵן בְּנָן וְשׁוּם בְּנַת צְלָפְחָד מַחְלָה וְנוֹעָה חָגְלָה מִלְכָּה וְתִרְצָה:

Tzelofchad the son of Cheifer had no sons, only daughters; The name[s] of Tzelofchad’s daughters were Machlah, No’ah, Choglah, Milkah and Sirtzah.

The descendants of Binyamin by their families were: The Balite family from Bela, the Ashbelite family from Ashbeil, the Achiramite family from Achiram,

The sons of Bela were Ard and Na’aman [giving rise to] the Ardite family, and the Na’amite family from Na’aman.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe saying.

לְאִלֵּין תִּתְפְּלֵג אַרְעָא בְּאַחֲסָנָא בְּמִנְיַן שְׁמָהָן:

“The land shall be apportioned among these, as an inheritance according to the number of names.

לְסַגִּיאֵי תַּסְגּוּן אַחֲסַנְתְּהוֹן וְלִזְעִירֵי תַּזְעֲרוּן אַחֲסַנְתְּהוֹן גְּבַר לְפוּם מִנְיָנוֹהִי תִּתְיְהַב אַחֲסַנְתֵּיהּ:

To the large [tribe], increase their inheritance, and to the small, diminish their inheritance; each person, according to his number, shall be given his inheritance.

בְּרַם בְּעַדְבָא תִּתְפְּלֵג יָת אַרְעָא לִשְׁמָהָן שִׁבְטֵי אֲבָהַתְהוֹן יַחְסְנוּן:

Only by lot should the land be divided, according to the names of their fathers’ tribes should they inherit it.

עַל פּוּם עַדְבָא תִּתְפְּלֵג אַחֲסַנְתְּהוֹן בֵּין סַגִּיאֵי לִזְעִירֵי:

By word of the lottery should their inheritance be divided, with regard to whether they are many or few.”

וְאִלֵּין מִנְיָנֵי לֵוָאֵי לְזַרְעֲיַתְהוֹן לְגֵרְשׁוֹן זַרְעִית גֵּרְשׁוֹן לִקְהָת זַרְעִית קְהָת לִמְרָרִי זַרְעִית מְרָרִי:

These are the numbered ones of the Levites by their families: The Gershonite family of Gershon, the Kehosite family of Kehos, [and] the Merorite family of Merori.

These are the families of Levi: the Livnite family, the Chevronite family, the Machlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korchite family; Kehos’ son was Amram.

וְשׁוּם אִתַּת עַמְרָם יוֹכֶבֶד בַּת לֵוִי דִילֵדַת יָתַהּ לְלֵוִי בְּמִצְרָיִם וִילֵדַת לְעַמְרָם יָת אַהֲרֹן וְיָת משֶׁה וְיָת מִרְיָם אֲחָתְהוֹן:

The name of Amram’s wife was Yocheved, daughter of Levi, whom [her mother] bore to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram, Aharon, Moshe, and their sister Miriam.

וְאִתְיְלִיד לְאַהֲרֹן יָת נָדָב וְיָת אֲבִיהוּא יָת אֶלְעָזָר וְיָת אִיתָמָר:

To Aharon were borne, Nadav and Avihu, Elozor and Isamar.

וּמִית נָדָב וַאֲבִיהוּא בְּקָרוֹבֵהוֹן אֶשָּׁתָא נוּכְרֵתָא קֳדָם יְיָ:

Nadav and Avihu died when they offered a forbidden fire before Adonoy.

וַהֲווֹ מִנְיָנֵיהוֹן עַשְׂרִין וּתְלָתָא אַלְפִין כָּל דְּכוּרָא מִבַּר יַרְחָא וּלְעֵלָּא אֲרֵי לָא אִתְמְנִיאוּ בְּגוֹ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲרֵי לָא אִתְיְהִיבַת לְהוֹן אַחֲסָנָא בְּגוֹ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:

They numbered twenty-three thousand, for all males from one month and older. They were not counted among Bnei Yisroel, since no inheritance was given to them among Bnei Yisroel.

אִלֵּין מִנְיָנֵי משֶׁה וְאֶלְעָזָר כַּהֲנָא דִּי מְנוֹ יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמֵישְׁרַיָּא דְמוֹאָב עַל יַרְדֵּנָא דִירֵחוֹ:

This is the census of Moshe and Elozor the kohein who counted the Bnei Yisroel in the plains of Moav, at Yardein Yereicho.

וּבְאִלֵּין לָא הֲוָה גְבַר מִמִּנְיָנֵי משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן כַּהֲנָא דִּי מְנוֹ יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמַדְבְּרָא דְסִינָי:

Among this [census] there was no man who had been included in the census of Moshe and Aharon the kohein, who had counted Bnei Yisroel in the wilderness of Sinai,

אֲרֵי אֲמַר יְיָ לְהוֹן מֵמַת יְמוּתוּן בְּמַדְבְּרָא וְלָא אִשְׁתְּאַר מִנְהוֹן אֱנַשׁ אֶלָּהֵן כָּלֵב בַּר יְפֻנֶּה וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בַּר נוּן:

because Adonoy said to them that they would die in the desert. No one was left with the exception of Kaleiv, son of Yefuneh and Yehoshua, son of Nun.
