Boaz had gone up to the gate and was sitting there, and behold, the [other] redeemer was passing by—[the one] of whom Boaz had spoken—and he said [to him], “Come over, sit down here, So-and-so” and he came over and sat down.

Then Bo῾az went up to the gate, and sat down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Bo῾az spoke came by; unto whom he said, Ho there, such and such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.

And Boaz went up to the gate and he sat there, and behold, the redeemer passed by, of whom Boaz had spoken. And he said: Turn aside, sit here, Ploni Almoni [("the anonymous one," his name not being mentioned because he refused to redeem)]. And he turned aside and sat down.

He [then] took ten men, of the elders of the city and said, “Be seated here,” and they sat.

And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit down here. And they sat down.

And he took ten men of the elders of the city and he said: Sit here. And they sat.

Then he said to the redeemer, “The parcel of land which belonged to our brother, Elimelech, is up for sale by Naomi who has returned from the Moabite country.

And he said to the kinsman, No῾omi, who is come back out of the country of Mo᾽av, is selling a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelekh’s:

And he said to the redeemer: The portion of the field which belonged to our brother Elimelech is being sold by Na'ami, who has returned from the field of Moav.

And I decided to tell you about it, in these words—Buy it in the presence of those sitting here, and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you desire to redeem it, redeem it, and if it will not be redeemed, tell me, that I may know [now], for beside you there is no one to redeem it, and I am [next in line] after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.”

and I thought to advise thee of it, saying, Buy it in the presence of the inhabitants, and in the presence of the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it besides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.

And I said that I would tell you (of it), saying: Acquire (it) in the presence of the inhabitants and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem, redeem; and if he [i.e., you] will not redeem, tell me and I shall know. For there is no [close kin] other than you to redeem, and I, after you. And he said: I shall redeem.

Then, said Boaz, “On the day you acquire the field from Naomi, and from Rus, the Mo’avitess, wife of the deceased [son], you will have acquired it [in order] to perpetuate the name of the deceased upon his inheritance.”

Then said Bo῾az, On the day thou buyest the field from the hand of No῾omi, thou must buy also from Rut the Mo᾽avite, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

On the day you buy the field from Na'ami, you (must) buy it from Ruth the Moavitess, the wife of the deceased, to establish the name of the deceased upon his inheritance [(and she will not sell it to you unless you marry her)].

So the kinsman said, “I am unable to redeem it for myself, for I would mar my own inheritance, redeem it for yourself and assume my right of redemption, for I am unable to redeem it.”

And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I harm my own inheritance: take my right of redemption for thyself; for I cannot redeem it.

And the redeemer said: I cannot redeem it unto me lest I destroy [i.e., blemish] my seed [(Ploni Almoni mistakenly assuming that "An Ammonite and a Moavite shall not come into the congregation of the L-rd" [Deuteronomy 23:4] applies to a Moavitess as well)]. You redeem my inheritance, for I cannot redeem it.

This was the former custom in Israel, concerning redemption and exchange, to validate all [such] matters—a man would take off his shoe and give it to the other party—this was the form of validation in Israel.

Now this was the custom in former time in Yisra᾽el concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all manner of transactions; a man pulled off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was the manner of attesting in Yisra᾽el.

And this was the custom of yore in Israel for redemption [(sale)] and for exchange [(substitution [chalifin])] to establish every thing: a man [(as a sign of acquisition)] would remove his shoe and give it to his neighbor. And this [became] the [manner of] attestation in Israel.

So the redeemer said to Boaz, “Acquire it for yourself,” and so he took off his shoe.

Therefore the kinsman said to Bo῾az, Buy it for thyself. And he drew off his shoe.

And the redeemer said to Boaz: Acquire (it) for yourself. And he drew off his shoe.

Boaz then said to the elders and to all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have acquired all that belonged to Elimelech, and to [his sons], Kilyon and Machlon, from the hand of Naomi.

And Bo῾az said to the elders, and to all the people, you are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelekh’s, and all that was Kilyon’s and Maĥlon’s, from the hand of No῾omi.

And Boaz said to the elders and to all of the people: You are witnesses this day that I have acquired all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Kilyon and Machlon from the hand of Na'ami.

And moreover, Rus, the Moabitess, the wife of Machlon, I have taken [lit. acquired] as a wife, to perpetuate the name of the deceased upon his inheritance, that the name of the deceased be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his [native] place; you are [hereby] witness this day.”

Moreover Rut the Mo᾽avite, the wife of Maĥlon, have I acquired as my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: you are witnesses this day.

And also Ruth the Moavitess, the wife of Machlon, have I acquired for myself as a wife to establish the name of the deceased upon his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased not be cut off from his brothers and from the gate of his place [viz. 3:9] — you are witnesses this day.

And all the people said who were at the gate, and the elders [also] said: “We are witnesses! May Adonoy make this woman, who is coming into your home, like Rachel and like Leah, who together built the House of Israel. May you perform deeds of valor in Ephrath, and be famous in Bethlehem.

And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thy house like Raĥel and like Le᾽a, which two did build the house of Yisra᾽el; and be prosperous in Efrata, and be famous in Bet-leĥem:

And all the people in the gate and the elders said: [We are] witnesses. May the L-rd make the woman who is coming to your house as Rachel and as Leah, the two of whom built the house of Israel; and be prosperous in Efrata, and be renowned in Bethlehem.

May your house be like the house of Peretz, whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring which Adonoy will give you from this young woman.”

and let thy house be like the house of Pereż, whom Tamar bore to Yehuda, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman.

And may your house be as that of Peretz [(from whom you descended)], whom Tamar begot of Judah, of the seed that the L-rd shall give you from this maiden.

So Boaz took Rus and she became his wife; and he came to her. And Adonoy made her conceive and she gave birth to a son.

So Bo῾az took Rut, and she was his wife: and he went in to her, and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.

And Boaz took Ruth, and she was a wife to him, and he lived with her, and the L-rd granted her conception, and she bore a son.

And the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is Adonoy, Who has not withheld from you a redeeming kinsman [even] this day; and may his name be famous in Israel.

And the women said to No῾omi, Blessed is the Lord, who has not left thee this day without a redeemer, that his name may be famous in Yisra᾽el.

And the women said to Na'ami: Blessed is the L-rd, who did not leave you without a redeemer this day; and may his name be renowned in Israel.

And he will be unto you a restorer of life, and a support in your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you has borne him, [and] she is better to you than seven sons.

And he shall be to thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thy old age: for thy daughter in law, who loves thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, she has born him.

And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, has borne him — she, being better to you than seven sons.

And Naomi took the child, and held it in her bosom, and she became his nurse.

And No῾omi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse to it.

And Na'ami took the child and laid it on her bosom, and she was his nurse.

The [woman] neighbors gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi,” and they called his name, Oved; he was the father of Yishai [who was] the father of Dovid.

And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to No῾omi; and they called his name ῾Oved: he is the father of Yishay, the father of David.

And the neighbor women gave him a name, saying: A son was born to Na'ami. And they named him "Oved"; he was the father of Yishai, who was the father of David.

These are the generations of Peretz: Perets begot Hetzron;

Now these are the generations of Pereż: Pereż begot Ḥeżron,

[(Having traced David to Ruth, he now traces him to Judah.)] And these are the generations of Peretz [(the son of Judah)]: Peretz begot Chetzron,

and Hetzron begot Ram, and Ram begot Aminadav;

and Ḥeżron begot Ram, and Ram begot ῾Amminadav,

And Chetzron begot Ram, and Ram begot Aminadav,

and Aminadav begot Nachshon, and Nachshon begot Salmah;

and ῾Amminadav begot Naĥshon, and Naĥshon begot Salma,

And Aminadav begot Nachshon, and Nachshon begot Salmah,

and Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Oved;

and Salmon begot Bo῾az, and Bo῾az begot ῾Oved,

And Salmah begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Oved,

and Oved begot Yishai; and Yishai begot Dovid.

and ῾Oved begot Yishay, and Yishay begot David.

And Oved begot Yishai, and Yishai begot David.
