מי שאבד קונטרס או חומש או כתובים או נביאים והתחיל לכתוב אחר וכשנכתב חציו נמצא הראשון אסור לכתוב בחלק הנשאר דברים אחרים גם מדברי סופרים לפי שאז נקרא הוא עיקר והחומש טפל וכן אל ישים ספרי תלמוד על ספרי מקרא וכן אל יכסה את ספרו בקלפים הכתובים בהם רומנץ ומעשה באחד שכיסה חומש שלו בעור והיה כתוב בו לועזים של דברי הבאי תגרי מלכי האומות ובא צדיק וקרעו והסירו:
He who lost commentaries, a book of the Pentateuch or of the Writings or Prophets and started to write another, but when half completed the first one was found, it is then prohibited to write on the remaining half any other matters, even if it be rabbinic laws, for this will then be regarded as the main text and the bible portion as secondary. Similarly, let him not place a volume of the Talmud on a volume of the Bible,¹ similarly let him not cover his (biblical) book with folios containing a (secular) romance.² It happened with an individual who covered his Pentateuch with hide on which were written secular matters in a foreign tongue, i.e., the rivalries of kings, a righteous man came, tore it and removed it.
