A safeguard for piety is that the living should consider the accidents and misfortunes that overtake people and realize that because of their sins this happened to them. In the self-same matter wherein they planned evil they were punished, measure for measure.¹ As a result of this let a man examine his deeds lest it happen to him as it happened to them.
