א. צָרִיךְ לְהַאֲמִין בְּהַשֵׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ אֱמוּנָה וְלא בְּדֶרֶךְ מוֹפֵת.
One’s belief in God must come through faith and not because of miracles.
ב. עַל־יְדֵי עֲנָוָה תִּזְכֶּה לֶאֱמוּנָה.
You can achieve faith by being humble.
ג. בִּרְאוֹתְךָ שִׁנּוּי מַעֲשִֶׂה, אַל תּאמַר מִקְרֶה הוּא, אֶלָּא תַּאֲמִין כִּי זֶה הַשְׁגָּחַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
When you see something out of the ordinary, don’t say that it is coincidence; rather, believe that it is Divine providence.
ד. יֵשׁ דְּבָרִים שֶׁהֵם מְבִיאִים הֶזֵּק גָּדוֹל לָעוֹלָם. וְהַדָּבָר קָשֶׁה: לָמָּה נִבְרְאוּ? תֵּדַע, שֶׁבְּוַדַּאי יֵשׁ בָּהֶם צַד אֶחָד לְטוֹבָה.
There are things that bring great harm to the world and it is difficult to understand why they were created. You should know that they most certainly have some aspect of good.
ה. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הֲנָאָה מִדִּבּוּר שֶׁל אֶפִּיקוֹרוֹס אֲפִלּוּ שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִדִּבְרֵי אֶפִּיקוֹרְסוּת, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה בָּא לְהִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה־זָרָה.
Finding the words of a heretic pleasing will bring a person to thoughts of idolatry, even if those words are not heretical in and of themselves.
ו. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה הָאָדָם חָבִיב לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ כְּאִשָּׁה לְבַעְלָהּ.
A person’s faith endears him to God much like a wife is dear to her husband.
ז. מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מֵכִין אֶת לִבּוֹ, אֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לָבוֹא לֶאֱמוּנָה.
Without first preparing his heart, a person cannot achieve faith.
ח. מִי שֶׁנֶּאֱבַד לוֹ אֵיזֶהוּ דָּבָר, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁנָּפַל מֵאֱמוּנָתוֹ.
One who loses something has clearly fallen from his faith.
ט. מִי שֶׁנֶּאֱבַד אֱמוּנָתוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ, יֵלֵךְ עַל קִבְרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיסַפֵּר הַחֲסָדִים, שֶׁעָשָׂה לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא.
One who has lost his faith should visit Jewish graves and recount the kindness that God has performed for him.
י. אֱמוּנָה תּוֹלָה בְּפֶה שֶׁל אָדָם.
Faith is dependent upon a person’s mouth. [Speaking about faith not only increases faith—it is faith! (Likutey Moharan II, 44)].
יא. עַל־יְדֵי הַלִּמּוּד נִשְׁבָּרִים כָּל הַכְּפִירוֹת.
Torah study destroys all heresy.
יב. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה נִתְבָּרֵךְ.
Belief in God brings blessing.
יג. עַל־יְדֵי רִבּוּי אֲכִילָה נוֹפְלִים מֵאֱמוּנָה.
Overeating leads to a fall from faith.
יד. כְּשֶׁתִּסְתַּכֵּל בַּשָּׁמַיִם כְּשֶׁהֵם זַכִּים וּבְהִירִים, תִּזְכֶּה לֶאֱמוּנַת חֲכָמִים.
Gazing at the sky when it is clear and bright will bring you to faith in the Sages.
טו. כְּשֶׁנּוֹפֵל אֵיזֶה קֻשְׁיָא עַל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, אֲזַי תִּשְׁתּק, וְעַל־יְדֵי הַשְּׁתִיקָה מַחְשְׁבוֹתֶיךָ בְּעַצְמָם יָשִׁיבוּ לְךָ תֵּרוּץ עַל קֻשְׁיוֹתֶיךָ.
Should you find yourself questioning God, keep silent. By virtue of this silence, your very thoughts will provide you with an answer to your questions.
טז. כְּשֶׁמְּחָרְפִין אוֹתְךָ, וְאַתָּה שׁוֹתֵק, תִּזְכֶּה לְהָבִין תֵּרוּץ עַל קֻשְׁיוֹתֶיךָ וְתִזְכֶּה לְרוּחַ בִּינָה.
Remaining silent when you are insulted will earn you an answer to your questions and you will merit a spirit of understanding.
יז. כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ לָאָדָם מִתְנַגְּדִים לוֹמְדִים וַעֲשִׁירִים גְּדוֹלִים, דַּע, שֶׁזֶּה נַעֲשָׂה מֵחֲמַת שֶׁנָּפַל כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים מֵאֱמוּנָה.
You should know that when a person’s opponents are wise and very wealthy, it is because he has repeatedly fallen from faith.
יח. אֱמוּנָה חָשׁוּב כִּצְדָקָה. ִ
Faith is considered like charity.
יט. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה נִתְחַכֵּם.
Belief in God makes one wise.
כ. מִתְּחִלָּה צָרִיךְ לְהַאֲמִין בְּהַשֵׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, וְאַחַר־כָּךְ יִזְכֶּה לְהָבִין אוֹתוֹ בַּשֵּׂכֶל.
It is first necessary to have faith in God, and only then will you be worthy of understanding Him with your intellect.
כא. זִוּוּגָא דְּקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עַל־יְדֵי נִשְׁמוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל.
The unification of the Holy One comes about through the souls of the Jewish people.
כב. הַפֶּשַׁע שֶׁל אָדָם מַכְנִיס כְּפִירָה לָאָדָם.
A person’s sins bring him to entertain heresy.
כג. כְּשֶׁנּוֹפֵל מֵאֱמוּנָתוֹ יִבְכֶּה.
When a person falls from his belief in God, he will cry.
כד. אֱמוּנָה בָּא עַל־יְדֵי שְׁתִיקָה.
Faith comes by remaining silent [in the face of criticism].
כה. עַל־יְדֵי קִנְאָה אָדָם נוֹפֵל מֵאֱמוּנָתוֹ.
A person’s jealousy causes him to fall from his belief in God.
כו. מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ אֱמוּנָה, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁמְּזַלְזֵל בְּדִבְרֵי־תוֹרָה.
A person with no faith clearly belittles the words of the Torah.
כז. מִי שֶׁמְּנַקֶּה בְּכָל עֵת יָדָיו, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה מְזַכֶּה אֶת לִבּוֹ.
A person who is always cleaning his hands is purifying his heart.
כח. כְּשֶׁאָדָם נוֹפֵל מֵאֱמוּנָה, יֵדַע שֶׁדָּנִין אוֹתוֹ לְמַעְלָה.
When a person falls from faith, he should know that he is being judged on high.
כט. כְּשֶׁנּוֹפֵל מֵאֱמוּנָתוֹ בָּא לִידֵי קֶרִי וְלִידֵי הִרְהוּרֵי אִשָּׁה וְלִידֵי הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה־זָרָה.
One who has fallen from his belief in God will experience a seminal emission, and be plagued with promiscuous thoughts and thoughts of idolatry.
ל. אֱמוּנָה בָּא עַל־יְדֵי צְדָקָה.
Faith comes through giving charity.
לא. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה יָכוֹל לְהָבִין אֶת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
By means of faith one can come to understand God.
לב. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה יָכוֹל לָבוֹא לְבִטָּחוֹן.
Through faith one can come to trust in God.
לג. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמוּנָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ הוּא יִסְלַח לְךָ [עַל] כָּל עֲווֹנוֹתֶיךָ.
Because of faith, God will forgive all your sins.
לד. לִפְעָמִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא שׁוֹלֵחַ צַעַר לְאָדָם וּמַכֶּה אוֹתוֹ וְאֵין מַפִּיל אוֹתוֹ לְחֻלְשָׁה, אֵין זֶה כִּי־אִם בִּשְׁבִיל אֱמוּנָה.
There are times when God sends a person suffering and punishment, but He does not weaken him. This is only in order to foster faith.
לה. עַל־יְדֵי שְׁבוּעַת שֶׁקֶר נוֹפֵל מֵאֱמוּנָה.
Swearing falsely causes a person to fall from faith.
לו. מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ אֱמוּנָה אֵינוֹ מְקַבֵּל מוּסָר.
A person without faith does not accept rebuke.
לז. מִי שֶׁאֵין מַאֲמִין בְּדִבְרֵי הַצַּדִּיק לְסּוֹף שֶׁאֵין נֶהֱנֶה מֵהַדָּבָר אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁהוּא רוֹאֶה.
A person who does not believe in the words of the Tzaddik will in the end have no benefit from them, even though he will see [them coming true].
לח. מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ אֱמוּנָה, בְּוַדַּאי חֻקּוֹת הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא אֶצְלוֹ נִמְאָס.
A person without faith certainly despises God’s statutes.
לט. מָשִׁיחַ יָבוֹא בְּפֶתַע פִּתְאוֹם, וְעַל־יְדֵי זֶה מֵחֲמַת שִׂמְחָה יִפְחֲדוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
Mashiach will come suddenly and, because of their joy, the Jews will fear.
מ. כְּשֶׁיָּבוֹא מָשִׁיחַ, אֲזַי כָּל הַשָּׂרִים שֶׁל מַעְלָה וְשֶׁל מַטָּה יֶחֱלוּ, אֲבָל עַכְשָׁו כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ עֲלִיָּה לְאֵיזֶה שַׂר, אֲזַי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵם חוֹלִים.
When Mashiach comes, all the ministers on high and also those below in this world will be weakened. But now, whenever there is an ascent by any minister, the Jews are weakened.
מא. לֶעָתִיד לָבוֹא כָּל אֶחָד הַזָּעִיר מֵחֲבֵרוֹ בַּשָּׁנִים יִהְיֶה יוֹתֵר לְמַעְלָה.
In the World to Come, the “younger” one is the higher the level to which he will ascend.
מב. לא חָרְבָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם אֶלָּא בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁחִלְּלוּ אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת, וּבִטְּלוּ קְרִיאַת־שְׁמַע, שַׁחֲרִית וְעַרְבִית, וּבִטְּלוּ תִּינוֹקוֹת שֶׁל בֵּית־רַבָּן, וְלא הָיָה לָהֶם בּשֶׁת־פָּנִים זֶה מִזֶּה, וְהִשְׁווּ קָטן וְגָדוֹל, גַּם לא הוֹכִיחוּ זֶה אֶת זֶה, גַּם בִּזּוּ תַּלְמִידֵי־חֲכָמִים, גַּם פָּסְקוּ מִמֶּנָּהּ אַנְשֵׁי־אֲמָנָה.
Jerusalem was destroyed only because the Jews: desecrated Shabbat; neglected reciting both the morning and evening Shema; were lax in educating their young schoolchildren; felt no shame in each other’s presence; equated the lowly with the great; did not rebuke one another, but ridiculed Torah scholars; and there were no longer any men of faith in the city.
מג. אֵין יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נִפְדֵית אֶלָּא בִּצְדָקָה.
Jerusalem will be redeemed only through charity.
מד. מִלְחָמָה אַתְחַלְתָּא דִּגְאֻלָּה הִוא.
War is the beginning of redemption.
מה. מִי שֶׁמְּגַדֵּל חֲזִירִים, הוּא מְעַכֵּב אֶת הַגְּאֻלָּה.
A person who raises pigs delays the redemption.
מו. לא יִבָּנֶה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, עַד שֶׁיִּהְיֶה שָׁלוֹם בֵּין יִשְׂרָאֵל.
Jerusalem will not be rebuilt until there is peace among Jews.
מז. מַה שֶּׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל הוֹלְכִים בַּגָּלוּת מֵאֻמָּה לְאֻמָּה, הוּא סִימָן שֶׁיָּבוֹא מָשִׁיחַ.
That the Jews wander in exile from nation to nation is a sign that Mashiach will come.
מח. כְּשֶׁאֻמּוֹת מְחָרְפִין אוֹתָנוּ בְּיוֹתֵר זֶה סִימָן עַל מָשִׁיחַ.
When the nations insult us a great deal, it is a sign that Mashiach’s arrival is imminent.
מט. אֵין בֵּית־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ נִבְנֶה, עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה גַּאֲוָה.
The House of God will not be built until haughtiness ceases to exist.
נ. עַל־יְדֵי אַחְדוּת שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, יָבוֹא מָשִׁיחַ.
The spirit of oneness that will exist among Jews will bring Mashiach.
נא. מָשִׁיחַ יָבוֹא בִּשְׁנַת בְּרָכָה.
Mashiach will come in a year of blessing.
נב. אֵין מָשִׁיחַ בָּא, עַד שֶׁיִּכְלוּ כָּל הַנְּשָׁמוֹת שֶׁבַּגּוּף.
Mashiach won’t come until all the souls have been emptied from the body [of Primordial Man].
נג. הַמַּשִּׂיא בִּתּוֹ לְתַלְמִיד־חָכָם, וְהַמְהַנֵּהוּ מִנְּכָסָיו, וְהָעוֹשֶׂה פַּרְקְמַטְיָא לְתַלְמִיד־חָכָם, זוֹכֶה לִתְחִיַּת הַמֵּתִים.
When a person marries his daughter to a Torah scholar, or benefits a scholar with his possessions, or engages in business on the scholar’s behalf, he merits being resurrected from the dead.
נד. מֵרוּחַ פִּיו שֶׁל הַשַּׁקְּרָן נַעֲשָׂה יֵצֶר־הָרָע, וּכְשֶׁיָּבוֹא מָשִׁיחַ אֲזַי לא יִהְיֶה שֶׁקֶר, בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה לא יִהְיֶה יֵצֶר־הָרָע בָּעוֹלָם.
The breath from a liar’s mouth gives rise to the evil inclination. When Mashiach comes, falsehood will cease to exist and so there will be no evil inclination in the world.
נה. מִי שֶׁהוּא אִישׁ אֱמֶת, הוּא יָכוֹל לְהַכִּיר בְּאַחֵר, אִם אַחֵר דּוֹבֵר אֱמֶת אִם לָאו.
A person of truth can recognize in another if he is speaking falsely or not.
נו. הַשֶּׁקֶר – לא יַסְכִּימוּ עָלָיו רַבִּים.
A majority of people will not agree to something false.
נז. הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא שֹוֹנֵא לְזֶה הָאִישׁ, הַמְּדַבֵּר אֶחָד בַּפֶּה וְאֶחָד בַּלֵּב.
The Holy One despises a person who speaks one way with his lips and another in his heart.
נח. עָשִׁיר מְכַחֵשׁ – אֵין הַדַּעַת סוֹבְלוֹ, וְגַם הוּא נִבְזֶה בְּעֵינֵי עַצְמוֹ.
Reason cannot tolerate a rich person’s deceit. Even he finds himself despicable.
נט. תִּקּוּן לַפֶּה – שֶׁיִּתֵּן צְדָקָה.
Giving charity rectifies one’s speech.
ס. עַל־יְדֵי הָאֱמֶת הָעוֹלָם נִשְׁמָר מִכָּל הֶזֵּקוֹת.
Truth protects the world from all manner of harm.
סא. עַל־יְדֵי חֲנֻפָּה בָּא לְשֶׁקֶר.
Flattery leads to lying.
סב. מִי שֶׁנּוֹתֵן צְדָקָה – שְׂכָרוֹ שֶׁיִּזְכֶּה לֶאֱמֶת.
A person who gives charity is rewarded with attaining the truth.
סג. עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁקֶר בְּוַדַּאי תִּשְׂנָא הָעֲנָוִים.
A person who lies will certainly despise humble people.
סד. אָדָם נִכָּר עַל־יְדֵי מְשָׁרְתָיו, אִם הוּא אוֹהֵב שֶׁקֶר אִם לָאו.
One can tell from a person’s servants whether he is fond of falsehood.
סה. כְּשֶׁאֵין אֱמֶת אֵין חֶסֶד.
When there is no truth, there is no kindness.
סו. כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ לְךָ שֶׁקֶר, אֲזַי כְּשֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא רוֹצֶה לַעֲשוֹת לְךָ אֵיזֶה יְשׁוּעָה,אֲזַי הַשֶּׁקֶר מְגַלֶּה עֲווֹנוֹתֶיךָ,כְּדֵי שֶׁלּא יוֹשִׁיעַ לָךְ.
If you are in any way false, then when God desires to save you, this falsehood brings your sins out into the open so that He should not save you.
סז. עַל־יְדֵי אֱמֶת הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא פּוֹדֶה אוֹתְךָ מִכָּל הַצָּרוֹת.
For telling the truth, God will redeem you from all suffering.
סח. טוֹב לָאָדָם שֶׁיָּמוּת, מִשֶּׁיִּחְיֶה וְיִהְיֶה שַׁקְרָן בְּעֵינֵי בְנֵי־אָדָם.
A person should rather die, than live and be considered a liar by others.
