א. עַל־יְדֵי עֲנָוָה יִנָּצֵּל מֵהִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
A person’s humility saves him from idolatrous thoughts.
ב. כְּשֶׁאַתָּה מִתְפַּלֵּל וְנוֹפֵל לְךָ הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה תְּכַוֵּן בְּשֵׁם "אֱלֹקֵינוּ".
When bothered by thoughts of idolatry while praying, picture God’s Name *Eloheinu—*אלהינו—in your mind.
ג. מַחֲשָׁבוֹת טוֹבוֹת בָּאִים עַל־יְדֵי וִדּוּי, שֶׁמִּתְוַדִּים לִפְנֵי הַתַּלְמִיד־חָכָם.
Confessing in the presence of a Torah scholar brings to good thoughts.
ד. מִי שֶׁמְּסַפֵּר מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת שֶׁאֵרְעוּ לַצַּדִּיקִים, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה נִמְשָׁכִין לוֹ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת טוֹבוֹת.
Good thoughts are drawn to a person who tells stories about the Tzaddikim.
ה. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת, יָדִין אֶת כָּל בְנֵי־אָדָם לְכַף זְכוּת תָּמִיד.
Anyone who has evil thoughts should always look to find good in others.
ו. עַל־יְדֵי דִּמְעָה נִמְאָסִים כָּל הַתַּאֲווֹת.
A person’s tears cause him to view all passions with contempt.
ז. מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַאֲמִין בַּצַּדִּיק, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה אֵין לִבּוֹ נָכוֹן עִם הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
When a person does not believe in the Tzaddik, his heart is not right with God.
ח. הַחֲגוֹרָה שֶׁחָגוּר בָּהּ אֵיזֶה צַדִּיק – כְּשֶׁתַּחְגּר בָּהּ הוּא סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל הִרְהוּרִים.
Wearing a gartel once worn by a Tzaddik is a segulah for dispelling improper thoughts.
ט. עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁקֶר נִתְחַלֵּל הַבְּרִית קדֶשׁ.
Falsehood defiles the holy brit.
י. מִי שֶׁמְּקַדֵּשׁ אֶת עַצְמוֹ וְעוֹלֶה עַל מַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹ הִתְפָּאֲרוּת, כְּשֶׁיִּשְׁבּר הַהִתְפָּאֲרוּת, יַשִּׂיג וְיִקְנֶה הַתּוֹרָה.
If after being prideful for having sanctified himself a person breaks that pride, he will attain and acquire the Torah.
יא. הַצְּעָקָה מְבַטֵּל אֶת הַפְּנִיּוֹת.
Crying out to God eliminates distracting thoughts.
יב. עַל־יְדֵי לִמּוּד אַרְבָּעָה "שֻׁלְחָן־עָרוּךְ" יִתְבַּטֵּל הַפְּנִיּוֹת.
Studying the four sections of the Shulchan Arukh eliminates distracting thoughts.
יג. כְּשֶׁתַּחֲשׁב אֵיזֶה תּוֹרָה שֶׁחִדַּשְׁתָּ, הוּא סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל הַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת.
Thinking about a Torah insight that you originated is a segulah for eliminating undesirable thoughts.
יד. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת, יְדַבֵּר לְעַצְמוֹ דִּבְרֵי בִּזְיוֹנוֹת.
A person who has unholy thoughts should speak to himself in a degrading way.
טו. אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה מַטְרִידוֹת אֶת הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה.
Eating and drinking make the mind sluggish.
טז. עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס בָּא הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
Anger brings to idolatrous thoughts.
יז. כְּשֶׁמְּבַזֶּה אֶת הַמּוֹעֲדוֹת, בָּא לְהִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
Idolatrous thoughts plague a person who shows disrespect for the Jewish Festivals.
יח. מִי שֶׁיּוֹשֵׁב בֵּין אַנְשֵׁי נִאוּף אוֹ בְּמָקוֹם שֶׁהָיָה בּוֹ נִאוּף, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה בָּא לְהִרְהוּרִים רָעִים.
Sitting in the company of promiscuous people, or in a place where an immoral act was performed, leads one to unholy thoughts.
יט. אֵין הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע תָּאֵב אֶלָּא לְדָבָר שֶׁהוּא אָסוּר לוֹ.
The evil inclination desires only what is forbidden to it.
כ. הַתַּאֲווֹת – מְלֻבָּשׁ בָּהֶם חֶסֶד הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
All the passions contain an element of God’s lovingkindness.
כא. עַל־יְדֵי מְחִילַת עֲווֹנוֹת תִּזְכֶּה לְבַר־לֵבָב.
Through forgiveness for sin, you will be rewarded with a pure heart.
כב. עַל־יְדֵי הָרַחֲמָנוּת יִתְבַּטֵּל מִמְּךָ הַתַּאֲווֹת.
Showing compassion will eliminate your lustful desires.
כג. עַל־יְדֵי עֵינַיִם הַלֵּב מִתְאַוֶּה.
The eyes cause the heart to desire.
כד. עַל־יְדֵי תַּאֲווֹת הַלֵּב אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁלּא יִדָּבֵק בְּךָ מְאוּמָה.
The passions of the heart make blemish unavoidable.
כה. לְהִרְהוּרֵי זְנוּת סְגֻלָּה, שֶׁיִּשְׁתֶּה סַם הַמְשַׁלְשֵׁל.
Laxatives are a segulah against immoral thoughts.
כו. הַתְּפִלָּה שֶׁהִיא בְּכַוָּנַת הַלֵּב הִיא פּוֹתַחַת כָּל הַפְּתָחִים שֶׁל מַעְלָה.
Prayer prayed with an attentive heart opens all the doors on high.
כז. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה, אַל יִשָּׂא אֶצְלוֹ שׁוּם זָהָב.
A person with idolatrous thoughts should not wear any gold jewelry.
כח. עַל־יְדֵי שִׁכְרוּת בָּא הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
Drunkenness leads to idolatrous thoughts.
כט. עַל־יְדֵי אַהֲבַת נָשִׁים הַכָּבוֹד נִטָּל מִמְּךָ. גַּם אִשְׁתְּךָ אֵינָהּ קוֹלֶטֶת הַזֶּרַע וּמַפֶּלֶת, וּבִשְׁעַת הַלֵּדָה הַתִּינוֹק מֵת.
A passion for women causes one to lose respect. His wife will not conceive, or she will miscarry, or the child will die in birth.
ל. עַל־יְדֵי הַמַּחֲלקֶת בָּאִים הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה. גַּם בַּיִת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ מַחֲלקֶת יִהְיֶה בֵּית עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
Strife leads to idolatrous thoughts. A house in which quarrel is present will be a place in which idolatry is practiced.
לא. כְּשֶׁבָּאִים לָאָדָם מַחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת, יַגְבִּיהַּ קוֹלוֹ כְּאִלּוּ הוּא בּוֹכֶה, וּבָזֶה יָסוּרוּ מִמֶּנּוּ הַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת.
A person beset by untoward thoughts can eliminate them by raising his voice as if to cry.
לב. עַל־יְדֵי שְׁבוּעוֹת וּקְלָלוֹת בָּאִים מַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת.
Swearing and cursing bring on evil thoughts.
לג. עַל־יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן לא יָבוֹאוּ לְךָ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת.
Your trust in God will save you from evil thoughts.
לד. חֲרִיקַת הַשִּׁנַּיִם הוּא סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל מַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת.
Gritting one’s teeth is a segulah against evil thoughts.
לה. לְפִי הַמָּקוֹם שֶׁבַּתְּפִלָּה כֵּן הַנִּיצוֹצוֹת הַקְּדוֹשִׁים מַלְבִּישִׁים אֶת עַצְמָם בִּפְנִיּוֹת וּבָאִים לָאָדָם כְּדֵי לְתַקְּנָם.
The particular way in which the holy sparks veil themselves in distracting thoughts and then come to a person for rectification depends upon where he is up to in the prayer.
לו. מַסֶּכֶת יָדַיִם הִיא סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל מַחֲשָׁבוֹת רָעוֹת.
The tractate Yadayim is a segulah for dispelling evil thoughts.
לז. מִי שְׁתְּפִלָּתוֹ אֵינָהּ אֶלָּא בִּשְׁבִיל הַשְּׁכִינָה, לא יָבוֹא לוֹ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת.
Whoever prays only for the sake of the Divine Presence will be spared from untoward thoughts.
לח. עַל־יְדֵי שָׁלוֹם נִתְרוֹמֵם שְׁמוֹ יִתְבָּרֵךְ.
Through peace God’s Name is exalted.
לט. כְּשֶׁאִישׁ אוֹ אִשָּׁה חוֹשְׁבִים בִּשְׁעַת תַּשְׁמִישׁ בְּאֵיזֶה גּוֹי אוֹ בְּגוֹיָה, וְהַמַּחֲשָׁבָה הִיא בְּאַהֲבָה לְאֵיזֶה גּוֹי אוֹ גּוֹיָה, אֲזַי הַוָּלָד הַנּוֹלָד מִזֶּה הַתַּשְׁמִישׁ נִשְׁתַּמֵּד.
When a husband or wife has amorous thoughts for a non-Jew during their marital relations, the child conceived will become an apostate.
מ. הַצִּיצִית הֵם גָּדֵר לָעֶרְוָה.
Tzitzit guard against immorality.
מא. עַל־יְדֵי בִּקּוּר־חוֹלִים נִצּוֹל מִיֵּצֶר הָרָע.
Visiting the sick saves a person from the evil inclination.
מב. אֵין יֵצֶר הָרָע שׁוֹלֵט אֶלָּא בְּמַה שֶּׁעֵינָיו רוֹאוֹת.
A person’s evil inclination rules over only that which he sees.
מג. בֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וְלא נָשָׂא אִשָּׁה, כָּל יָמָיו בְּהִרְהוּרֵי עֲבֵרָה.
A person not married by age twenty will be bothered by sinful thoughts for the rest of his life.
מד. מִי שֶׁעָבַר עֲבֵרָה, וְאַחַר־כָּךְ מְהַרְהֵר בָּהּ לַעֲשֹוֹת עוֹד אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁלּא עָשָׂה, נִפְרָעִין עַל הַהִרְהוּר.
Whoever commits a sin and then thinks about doing it again is made to pay for the thought even without having repeated the action.
מה. לִדְחוֹת אֶת הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע יאמַר: רַחֲמָנָא נִגְעַר בֵּהּ בַּשָּׂטָן.
To chase away the evil inclination say: “O God, rebuke Satan” (paraphrase of Zekhariah 3:2).
מו. הַחֶמְדָּה וְהַמַּחֲשָׁבָה רָעָה הָעוֹלָה עַל הַלֵּב פִּתְאוֹם, שֶׁאֵין בִּרְשׁוּת הָאָדָם לְהִמָּנַע מִמֶּנָּהּ, אֵין נֶעֱנָשִׁין עָלֶיהָ, אֶלָּא כַּאֲשֶׁר יְהַרְהֵר וְחוֹזֵר וּמְהַרְהֵר.
A person is not punished for a sudden lust or evil thought that he cannot prevent, unless he goes over it in his mind.
מז. לְרב מִדּוֹת הָרָעוֹת טוֹב לְהָקִיז דָּם.
Cupping is helpful against most bad character traits.
מח. עַל־יְדֵי אֲכִילַת דָּגִים נִתְרַבֶּה הַתַּאֲוָה.
Eating fish increases one’s sexual desire.
מט. מִי שֶׁאוֹכֵל בִּזְכוּת אָבוֹת, נוֹפְלִים לוֹ הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
When a person’s livelihood comes in the merit of his ancestors, he experiences thoughts of idol worship.
נ. עַל־יְדֵי מִשְׁכַּב־זָכָר בָּא לִידֵי הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
Homosexual practices lead to idolatrous thoughts.
נא. הַמְהַרְהֵר בְּכּוּתִית, בָּא לִידֵי הִרְהוּרֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
A Jew whose thoughts are for a non-Jewish woman will have thoughts of idolatry.
נב. הַמִּסְתַּכֵּל בָּעֶרְוָה, קַשְׁתּוֹ נִנְעֶרֶת.
Staring at nakedness brings one to an aroused state.
נג. הַמְבַזֶּה אֶת הַמּוֹעֲדוֹת, כְּאִלּוּ עוֹבֵד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
Disgracing the Festivals is comparable to idol worship.
נד. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ אֱמוּנָה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא מֵגֵן עָלָיו, שֶׁלּא יָבוֹא לִידֵי הִרְהוּר וְאָזִיל לְהַהוּא עָלְמָא בְּלא חֵטְא, וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא מְסַיֵּעַ לוֹ.
When a person has faith, God protects him from improper thoughts and helps him. He departs for the next world free of sin.
נה. בִּזְמַן שֶׁעוֹסְקִים בַּתּוֹרָה וּבִגְמִילוּת־חֲסָדִים, יִצְרָם מָסוּר בְּיָדָם.
At the time people study Torah and do acts of kindness, they have mastery over their evil inclination.
נו. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הֲנָאָה מִדְּבַר אֶפִּיקוֹרְסוּת, לְסוֹף שֶׁיָּכפוּ אוֹתוֹ לַעֲבוֹדָה זָרָה.
A person who has pleasure from anything heretical will eventually be forced to worship idolatry.
נז. כְּשֶׁיִּמְנַע עַצְמוֹ מֵעֲבֵרוֹת וִיבַקֵּשׁ כַּפָּרָה, זֶה יִגְרם שֶׁאֲפִלּוּ בַּמַּחֲשָׁבָה לא יֶחֱטָא.
When a person keeps himself from transgressing and seeks forgiveness, he will consequently not sin—even in thought.
נח. הַבָּא עַל הַכּוּתִית, הוּא מַמְשִׁיךְ עַל עַצְמוֹ הַזֻּהֲמָה, וְאַחַר־כָּךְ כְּשֶׁבָּא עַל אִשְׁתּוֹ וְהוֹלִיד וָלָד, הַוָּלָד יִהְיֶה מוּמָר.
A Jew who has relations with a non-Jewish woman pollutes himself. The child he later conceives with his wife will be an apostate.
נט. אַבְנֵט – תִּקּוּן עַל הִרְהוּרִים.
A belt is a rectification for improper thoughts.
ס. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הִרְהוּרֵי נָשִׁים, בִּטּוּלָם – עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁלּא יִגְנב דַּעַת הַבְּרִיּוֹת.
A person plagued by sexual fantasies can dispel them by not deceiving people, or by giving charity.
סא. גַּם עַל־יְדֵי צְדָקָה.
