א. צָרִיךְ אָדָם לִהְיוֹת נִכְסָף וּמִשְׁתּוֹקֵק לַטּוֹב הַכְּלָלִי, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁיִּמָשֵׁךְ לוֹ לְבַד הֶפְסֵד.
A person should hope and long for the good of the community, even though he himself stands to lose by it.
ב. הַמִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּבֵית הַכְּנֶסֶת, כְּאִלּוּ הֵבִיא מִנְחָה טְהוֹרָה.
When a person prays in a synagogue, it is as if he brought a pure meal-offering.
ג. הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא. מָצוּי בְּבֵית הַכְּנֶסֶת.
God can be found in the synagogue.
ד. עַל יְדֵי חֲנֻפָּה אֵין תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת.
Flattery prevents a person’s prayers from being heard.
ה. עַל יְדֵי עֵסֶק הַתּוֹרָה מִתּוֹךְ דּחַק תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמָעַת.
When a person studies Torah despite difficult circumstances, his prayers are heard.
ו. הַמִּתְפַּלֵּל עַל חֲבֵרוֹ, וְהוּא צָרִיךְ לְאוֹתוֹ דָּבָר, הוּא נַעֲנֶה תְּחִלָּה.
When you pray for a fellow Jew even though you require the very same thing, God will answer your need first.
ז. מִי שֶׁדַּעְתּוֹ שְׁפֵלָה עָלָיו, אֵין תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִמְאֶסֶת.
A humble person’s prayers won’t be scorned.
ח. לְעוֹלָם יַקְדִּים אָדָם תְּפִילָּה לְצָרָה.
Don’t wait for trouble to begin before starting to pray.
ט. כָּל הַמְאַמֵּץ עַצְמוֹ בִּתְפִילָּה לְמַטָּה, אֵין צָרִים יְכוֹלִים לְהַסְטִינוּ מִלְמַעְלָה.
Whenever anyone devotes his strength to prayer below, in this world, his adversaries are unable to accuse him from on high.
י. לְעוֹלָם יְבַקֵּשׁ אָדָם רַחֲמִים, שֶׁיִּהְיוּ הַכּל מְאַמְּצִין אֶת כּחוֹ, וְשֶׁיְּסַיְּעוּהוּ מַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת לְבַקֵּשׁ רַחֲמִים, וְשֶׁלּא יִהְיוּ לוֹ מַסְטִינִים מִלְמַעְלָה.
One should always entreat God for mercy that all things support his efforts [in prayer], that the ministering angels assist him in requesting mercy, and that he have no opposition from on high.
יא. תְּפִילַּת אַחֵר מוֹעִיל יוֹתֵר מִתְּפִילַּת עַצְמוֹ, וַאֲפִילּוּ צַדִּיק צָרִיךְ לִתְפִילַּת אֲחֵרִים.
Another person’s prayer is more effective than when one prays for oneself. Even a Tzaddik needs the prayer of others.
יב. מֻתָּר לְהִתְפַּלֵּל עַל בַּעַל לָשׁוֹן הָרָע, שֶׁיָּמוּת וְשֶׁיִּשְׁתַּכַּח תּוֹרָתוֹ וְשֶׁלּא יִהְיֶה לוֹ חֵלֶק לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא וְשֶׁלּא יִהְיוּ לוֹ בָּנִים חֲכָמִים.
One is permitted to pray for a slanderer’s death, or that he forgets his Torah studies, or that he will have no share in the World to Come, or any wise children.
יג. כָּל הָעוֹסֵק בַּתּוֹרָה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עוֹשֶׂה לוֹ חֲפָצָיו.
God fulfills the wishes of anyone who occupies himself with Torah study.
יד. יָפָה צְעָקָה לָאָדָם בֵּין קדֶם גְּזַר דִּין בֵּין לְאַחַר גְּזַר דִּין.
It is good to cry out to God, whether before or after the decree has been issued.
טו. אַל יְבַקֵּשׁ אָדָם עַל שׁוּם דָּבָר יוֹתֵר מִדַּאי.
A person should not excessively pray for anything.
טז. בְּיוֹם הַגְּשָׁמִים יְשׁוּעָה פָּרָה וְרָבָה בָּעוֹלָם, וּמְלִיצֵי זְכוּת נִכְנָסִין לְפָנָיו.
When rain falls, it is a time of increasing salvation in the world and the advocates of merit are granted an audience before God.
יז. תְּפִילַּת יָחִיד אֵינָהּ נִשְׁמַעַת אֶלָּא אִם כֵּן לִבּוֹ מְכֻוָּן, וּתְפִילַת צִבּוּר נִשְׁמַעַת, אַף. עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵין לֵב כֻּלָּם שָׁלֵם.
The prayers of an individual are not listened to unless he prays with an attentive heart. But the prayers of a congregation are heard even if they don’t all pray wholeheartedly.
יח. לא מַצְלִינָן אַתַּרְתֵּי.
Don’t [simultaneously] pray for two things.
יט. אָסוּר לְהַטְרִיחַ אֶת הַשֵּׁם לְשַׁנּוֹת אֶת הַטֶּבַע.
It is forbidden to burden God [by praying that] He alter the dictates of Nature.
כ. מִי שֶׁמַּעֲבִיר עַל מִדּוֹתָיו, תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת.
When a person overlooks personal affronts, his prayers are heard.
כא. הַמְסַפֵּר בְּשִׁבְחוֹ שֶׁל מָקוֹם יוֹתֵר מִדַּאי, נֶעֱקַר מִן הָעוֹלָם.
One who praises God excessively will be uprooted from the world.
כב. בֵּית הַכְּנֶסֶת שֶׁמְּחַשְּׁבִין בּוֹ חֶשְׁבּוֹנוֹת, לְסוֹף שֶׁיָּלִינוּ בּוֹ מֵת מִצְוָה.
A synagogue in which people calculate business accounts will in the end be the site of a deserted corpse [whose burial becomes the obligation of those who find it.]
כג. לְכָל דָּבָר שֶׁבִּקְדֻשָּׁה צָרִיךְ הֲכָנָה וְהַזְמָנָה.
Anything holy requires preparation and readiness.
כד. בִּשְׁאֵלַת צְרָכָיו אַל יָרִים ראשׁוֹ לִשְׁאל שְׁאֵלָה גְּדוֹלָה, אֲבָל בַּתּוֹרָה וְיִרְאַת שָׁמַיִם יִשְׁאַל כָּל תַּאֲוָותוֹ.
When asking for one’s needs, a person should not be so brazen as to ask for something great. However, with regard to Torah or the fear of God, a person should ask for all that he desires.
כה. מִצְוָה לִהְיוֹת לוֹ בְּגָדִים מְכֻבָּדִים בִּשְׁעַת הַתְּפִילָּה.
It is a mitzvah to wear respectable clothing while praying.
כו. הִנְהִיגוּ בִּרְכוֹתָיו בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, כְּדֵי לִהְיוֹת רְגִילִין לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא.
One should accustom himself to reciting the blessings in this world, so that he will be familiar with them in the World to Come.
כז. יְבַקֵּשׁ אָדָם רַחֲמִים, שֶׁלּא יָבוֹא לִידֵי עֲנִיּוּת.
A person should ask for mercy that he not become impoverished.
כח. עַל יְדֵי הַתְּפִילָּה יָכוֹל לְשַׁנּוֹת אֶת הַמַּזָּל.
Through prayer a person has the ability to alter his fate.
כט. הַדִּבּוּר בְּקוֹל רָם מֵבִיא הַרְגָּשָׁה וּתְנוּעָה בְּכָל הָאֵיבָרִים.
Speaking in a loud voice brings feeling and movement to all one’s limbs.
ל. מִי שֶׁעוֹלֶה עַל רוּחוֹ לְהִתְחַנֵּן לִפְנֵי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, עַל יְדֵי זֶה נוֹשֵׂא חֵן בְּעֵינֵי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
One who thinks about entreating God thereby finds favor in His eyes.
לא. עַל יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שׁוֹמֵעַ תְּפִילָּתוֹ.
A person’s trust in God causes Him to listen to his prayers.
לב. אַל תִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּבַיִת, שֶׁבָּנָה בַּעַל מַחֲלקֶת.
Don’t pray in a place built by a contentious person.
לג. קדֶם הַתְּפִילָּה תִּתֵּן צְדָקָה, וּתְקַשֵּׁר אֶת עַצְמְךָ לְצַדִּיקֵי הַדּוֹר.
Before starting to pray, give charity and bind yourself to the Tzaddikim of the generation.
לד. אָדָם מְקַבֵּל שֶׁפַע וְכחַ אֱלקִי כְּפִי אוֹתוֹ הַמָּקוֹם שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל בּוֹ.
The amount of bounty and spiritual strength a person receives depends upon the particular place in which he prays.
לה. כְּשֶׁהַצִּבּוּר. מִתְפַּלְּלִים, הוּא עֵת רָצוֹן.
While the community prays, it is a time of favor.
לו. מִי שֶּׁיֶּשׁ לוֹ בֵּית הַכְּנֶסֶת, וְאֵינוֹ נִכְנָס לְשָׁם לְהִתְפַּלֵּל, גּוֹרֵם גָּלוּת לְבָנָיו.
One who has a synagogue [nearby] but doesn’t go there to pray, brings exile upon his descendants.
לז. עַל כָּל הַדְּבָרִים, הֵן עַל דָּבָר גָּדוֹל הֵן עַל דָּבָר קָטָן, תִּתְפַּלֵּל.
Whatever you need, whether major or minor, pray for it.
לח. אַקְדִּימוּ וְאַחֲשִׁיכוּ לְבֵי כְנִישְׁתָּא כִּי הֵיכֵי דְּתַאֲרִיכוּ חַיֵּי.
Come early and stay late in the synagogue so that you will live long.
לט. מִי שֶׁאֶפְשָׁר לוֹ לְבַקֵּשׁ רַחֲמִים עַל חֲבֵרוֹ וְאֵינוֹ מְבַקֵּשׁ, נִקְרָא חוֹטֵא.
One who is capable of requesting mercy for a fellow Jew but does not is called a sinner.
מ. הַנִּפְנֶה וְנוֹטֵל יָדָיו וּמַנִּיחַ תְּפִילִּין וְקוֹרֵא קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע וּמִתְפַּלֵּל, כְּאִלּוּ בָּנָה מִזְבֵּחַ וְהִקְרִיב עָלָיו קָרְבָּן וּכְאִלּוּ טָבַל.
When a person answers nature’s call, washes his hands, dons tefilin, recites the Shema Yisrael and prays, it is tantamount to having built an altar and brought a sacrifice on it. It is also as if he immersed in a mikvah.
מא. מִי שֶׁנִּזְהָר לוֹמַר דִּבּוּר קָדוֹשׁ בְּבֵית הַטִּנּפֶת, יִזְכֶּה לַאֲרִיכוּת יָמִים.
Whoever avoids speaking of holy things in an unclean place will be rewarded with long life.
מב. גְּדוֹלָה תְּפִילָּה מִמַּעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים וּמִן הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת.
Prayer is even greater than good deeds and sacrifices.
מג. תּוֹרָה וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים וּתְפִילָּה וְדֶרֶךְ אֶרֶץ צְרִיכִין חִזּוּק.
Torah study, good deeds, prayer and engaging in worldly matters all require encouragement.
מד. אַל תִּתְפַּלֵּל אֶלָּא בְּבַיִת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ חַלּוֹנוֹת.
Pray only in a place that has windows.
מה. עַל יְדֵי צְדָקָה בִּשְׁתֵּי יָדַיִם תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת.
Giving charity with both hands causes a person’s prayers to be heard.
מו. בִּשְׁעַת תְּפִילָּה יִפְרשֹ כַּפָּיו, כְּאִלּוּ מְקַבֵּל אֵיזֶה דָּבָר.
While praying, a person should spread out his hands as if he were receiving something.
מז. עַל יְדֵי גֶּזֶל אוֹ מְבַיֵּשׁ פְּנֵי חֲבֵרוֹ, אֵין תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת.
Stealing or embarrassing a fellow Jew prevents a person’s prayers from being heard.
מח. שַׁבָּת וְראשׁ חֹדֶשׁ יוֹתֵר מְסֻגָּל לְהַעֲלוֹת הַתְּפִילָּה.
Shabbat and the new moon are especially beneficial times for elevating prayers.
מט. כְּשֶׁאָדָם נֶעֱצָר, זֶה סִימָן שֶׁאֵין תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִתְקַבֶּלֶת.
When a person is detained, it is a sign that his prayers are not being accepted.
נ. עַל יְדֵי הַהִשְׁתּוֹקְקוּת שֶׁאָדָם מִשְׁתּוֹקֵק בַּלַּיְלָה לַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, עַל יְדֵי זֶה בְּנָקֵל לוֹ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בַּבּקֶר.
The yearning for God that a person expresses at night makes it easier for him to pray in the morning.
נא. תְּפִילָּה. שֶׁהִיא בִּדְמָעוֹת הִיא נִתְקַבֶּלֶת.
A prayer accompanied by tears will be accepted.
נב. כְּשֶׁאַתָּה מְבַקֵּשׁ אֵיזֶה דָּבָר, תַּזְכִּיר זְכוּת אָבוֹת.
When asking God for something, mention the merit of your ancestors.
נג. כְּשֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מַעֲנִישׁ אֵיזֶה רָשָׁע שֶׁיּוֹדֵעַ בּוֹ, שֶׁלּא יַעֲשֶׂה עוֹד תְּשׁוּבָה, וְהַצַּדִּיק מִתְפַּלֵּל עָלָיו יוֹתֵר מִדַּאי, עַל יְדֵי זֶה נֶעֱנָשׁ הַצַּדִּיק.
When God punishes a wicked person whom He knows won’t repent and the Tzaddik prays excessively for that person, the Tzaddik too will be punished.
נד. כְּשֶׁהַמִּתְפַּלֵל נוֹפֵל לְקַטְנוּת, זֶה סִימָן שֶׁלּא יִתְבַּלְבֵּל [יִתְקַבֵּל] תְּפִילָּתוֹ.
When a person falls into a state of constricted consciousness while praying, it is a sign that his prayers will not be accepted.
נה. כְּשֶׁאֵין לְךָ שָׁלוֹם עִם הָעוֹלָם, אֵין נִתְקַבֵּל תְּפִילָּתְךָ.
When you are not at peace with the world, your prayers will not be accepted.
נו. צָרִיךְ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בִּשְׁלוֹם הָעִיר, אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה דָּר בָּהּ.
You should pray that there be peace in the city in which you live.
נז. מִי שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּשִׂמְחָה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְכַבֵּד אוֹתוֹ וּפוֹקֵד אֶת לוֹחֲצָיו.
Whoever prays joyously, God honors him and punishes those who oppress him.
נח. עַל יְדֵי תִּקּוּן חֲצוֹת מַזְכִּירִין אֶת [לִפְנֵי] הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֶת הַטּוֹבוֹת, שֶׁהִבְטִיחַ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל.
By reciting Tikkun Chatzot we remind God of the good that He guaranteed to the Jewish people.
נט. מִי שֶׁמְּלַמֵּד זְכוּת עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל, עַל יְדֵי זֶה מְעוֹרֵר תְּשׁוּעָה, וְהַתְּשׁוּעָה בָּאָה עַל יָדוֹ.
Whoever speaks favorably of the Jewish people arouses salvation, and this salvation will come about through him.
ס. מִי שֶׁאֵין מִתְפַּלֵּל עַל צָרַת יִשְׂרָאֵל, נִקְרָא חוֹטֵא.
Whoever doesn’t pray when Jews suffer is called a sinner.
סא. צָרִיךְ אָדָם לְהִתְפַּלֵּל עַל זַרְעוֹ וְעַל כָּל הַבָּאִים אַחֲרָיו.
A person should pray for his children and for all his descendants.
סב. אָסוּר לָאָדָם שֶׁיִּהְיֶה כְּפוּי טוֹבָה בֵּין לְיִשְׂרָאֵל בֵּין לְגוֹי.
It is forbidden for a person to deny the good he has received, whether from a Jew or a gentile.
סג. מִי שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְכַפֵּר לוֹ עַל כָּל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו.
When a person prays for the Jewish people, God pardons all his sins.
סד. הַחוֹלֶה שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל עַל עַצְמוֹ בִּדְמָעוֹת, בְּוַדַּאי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא יְרַפֵּא אוֹתוֹ וִיקַבֵּל תְּפִילָּתוֹ.
When a sick person tearfully prays for himself, God will certainly heal him and accept his prayers.
סה. כְּשֶׁאַתָּה רוֹצֶה. לִשָּׂא תְּפִילָּתְךָ, תִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּעַד יִשְׂרָאֵל.
When you want to elevate your own prayers, pray for the Jewish people.
סו. הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת הָאָדָם שֶׁיִּתְפַּלֵּל לְפָנָיו.
The Holy One requests that a person pray to Him.
סז. מִי שֶׁמַּצִּיל אֶת הֶעָנִי מֵחָזָק מִמֶּנּוּ, הַכּחַ הוּא בְּנָקֵל בְּאוֹתִיּוֹת הַתְּפִילָּה.
Saving a poor person from someone stronger than him makes it easy for one to put energy into the letters of prayer.
סח. עַל יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן תְּפִילָּתוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם נִשְׁמַעַת.
When a person trusts in God, his prayers are heard.
סט. מִי שֶׁהוּא עָנָו, יָכוֹל לִצְעק בִּתְפִילָּתוֹ מִן הַלֵּב.
A person who is humble is capable of crying out from the heart while praying.
ע. עַל יְדֵי שִׂמְחָה תָּבוֹא תְּפִילָּתְךָ בְּהֵיכַל מֶלֶךְ.
By being happy your prayers will reach the chamber of the King.
עא. מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ הֲנָאָה מִתְּפִילָּתוֹ, יִתְפַּלֵּל בְּרִנָּה.
One who gets no pleasure from his prayers should sing joyously while praying.
עב. מִי שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּכחַ, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שׁוֹמֵעַ תְּפִילָּתוֹ.
Godlistens to theprayers of a person who prays energetically.
עג. מִי שֶׁנָּדַר אֵיזֶהוּ נֶדֶר, אֵין מְקַבְּלִין תְּפִילָּתוֹ עַד שֶׁיְּשַׁלֵּם אֶת נִדְרוֹ.
The prayers of a person who has made some vow will not be accepted until he fulfills his vow.
עד. מִי שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ אֱמוּנָה, אֵין תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת.
The prayers of a faithless person are not heard.
עה. מִי שֶׁמְּשַׂמֵּחַ אֶת הַצַּדִּיק, תְּפִילָּתוֹ נִשְׁמַעַת.
When a person brings joy to the Tzaddik, his prayers are heard.
עו. צָרִיךְ קדֶם הַתְּפִילָּה לְדַבֵּק אֶת רוּחוֹ בַּבּוֹרֵא, וּמֵחֲמַת הַדְּבֵקוּת יֵצְאוּ הַדִּבּוּרִים מֵעַצְמָן מִפִּיו.
Before praying a person should bind his spirit to the Creator. On account of this attachment the words will emerge from his mouth of their own accord.
עז. כְּשֶׁתִּשְׁמַע חֶרְפָּתְךָ וְתִשְׁתּק, תִּזְכֶּה שֶׁיַּעֲנֶה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא בַּקָּשָׁתְךָ.
In reward for remaining silent when disgraced God will answer your requests.
עח. מִי שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל עַל חֲבֵרוֹ, עַל יְדֵי זֶה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא כּוֹפֵל לוֹ אֶת טוֹבָתוֹ.
Whoever prays for a fellow Jew, God doubles his prosperity.
עט. תְּפִילָּה שֶׁאֵינָהּ נִתְקַבֶּלֶת לְמַעְלָה נִשְׂרֶפֶת.
- Prayer that is not accepted above is burned.
פ. מִי שֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל עַל הַחֻרְבָּן, עַל יְדֵי זֶה יִזְכֶּה לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בְּלֵב וְגוּף.
One who mourns the Temple’s destruction merits praying with his heart and body.
פא. תְּפִילָּה שֶׁהִיא בְּשִׂמְחָה הִיא עֲרֵבָה וּמְתוּקָה לַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
A joyous prayer is both pleasing and sweet to God.
פב. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עֲנָוָוה, אֲפִילּוּ. כְּשֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עוֹשֶׂה מַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹ.
When a person is humble, God will fulfill his prayers even if he prays only in thought.
פג. לִפְעָמִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֵין מְקַבֵּל תְּפִילַּת הַצַּדִּיק, כְּשֶׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל עַל אֵיזֶה אָדָם, כִּי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא יוֹדֵעַ, שֶׁיַּמְשִׁיךְ זֶה הָאָדָם לְאַחַר זְמַן אֶת הַצַּדִּיק בַּחֲטָאִים מֵחֲטָאָיו.
There are times when God won’t accept the Tzaddik’s prayers on behalf of another person. This is because He knows that this person will eventually draw the Tzaddik into his own sinful ways.
פד. אֵין הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה הוֹלֶכֶת אֶלָּא אַחַר הָעוֹבֵד. [פֵּרוּשׁ מִי שֶׁעוֹבֵד הַשֵּׁם, אַחֲרָיו הוֹלְכִים וְנִמְשָׁכִים הַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹת לְבַלְבֵּל יוֹתֵר מִשְּׁאָר בְּנֵי אָדָם, וְזֶהוּ אֵין הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה הוֹלֶכֶת אֶלָּא אַחַר הָעוֹבֵד].
Thoughts follow only the one who serves God. (This can be explained as follows: When a person serves God, he attracts and is trailed by confusing thoughts, more so than other people.)
