א. עַל יְדֵי נִאוּף נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה אוֹ לָחֳלִי כְּאֵב רַגְלַיִם. גַּם תַּלְמִיד שֶׁלֹּא הִגִּיעַ לְהוֹרָאָה וּמוֹרֶה, נוֹפֵל לָזֶה, גַּם מַזִּיקִין שׁוֹלְטִין עָלָיו.

Sexual immorality leads to incarceration or pain in one’s legs. A student who, despite being unqualified, instructs others, will also be punished with one of these afflictions, and he will be placed at the mercy of harmful forces.

ב. סְגֻלַּת הַצְּדָקָה לְבַטֵּל כָּל אֵלּוּ הָעֳנָשִׁים.

Giving charity is a segulah for nullifying these afflictions.

ג. בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁאֵין מְבַקְשִׁין רַחֲמִים עַל חֲבֵרוֹ, עַל יְדֵי זֶה נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה, וְתִקּוּן לִתְפִיסָה, שֶׁיְּפַרְנֵס אֵיזֶהוּ בַּעֲלֵי חַיִּים.

Not pleading for mercy for a fellow Jew causes a person to fall into captivity. He can make amends by providing food for some living creature.

ד. עַל יְדֵי תַּשְׁמִישׁ הַמִּטָּה בְּיָמִים שֶׁאֲסוּרִין בְּתַשְׁמִישׁ, עַל יְדֵי זֶה נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה.

Marital relations with one’s wife on days when it is prohibited causes a person to be imprisoned.

ה. כְּשֶׁאֶחָד מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נִתְפַּס. בִּתְפִיסָה, עַל יְדֵי זֶה לְפִי בְּחִינָתוֹ נִסְתְּמוּ מַעַיְנוֹת הַחָכְמָה מֵחַכְמֵי הַדּוֹר, וּלְהֵפֶךְ כְּשֶׁיוֹצֵא מֵהַתְּפִיסָה.

When a Jew is taken captive, his aspect of the wellsprings of wisdom becomes sealed from the sages of the generation. The reverse happens when a person is freed from captivity.

ו. לִפְעָמִים עַל יְדֵי תְּפִיסָה נִצּוֹל מִכִּלְיוֹן בָּנִים.

Sometimes, by being taken captive, a person is spared the loss of his children.

A person guilty of slander will suffer imprisonment.

ח. הַשְּׂעָרוֹת שֶׁגְּדֵלִין עַל הָאָדָם וְהַמַּלְבּוּשִׁים שֶׁעַל הָאָדָם בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁיּוֹשֵׁב בִּתְפִיסָה, שׁוֹרֶה עֲלֵיהֶם רוּחַ מְכֹעָר, שֶׁעוֹכֶר וּמְבַזֶּה אֶת הָאָדָם.

While in captivity, a person’s hair and clothing acquire a foul spirit that makes him both repugnant and despicable.

ט. הִשְׁתַּדְּלוּת בְּפִדְיוֹן שְׁבוּיִים מְסֻגָּל לְהוֹלָדָה.

The effort one makes to redeem captives is a segulah for having children.

י. מִי שֶׁעוֹסֵק בְּפִדְיוֹן שְׁבוּיִים, גְּדוֹלֵי הַדּוֹר נִכְלָלִים בּוֹ עַל יְדֵי זֶה.
