א. הַתַּעֲנִית מוֹעִיל לְכָל דָּבָר.
Fasting is beneficial for all things.
ב. מִי שֶׁהוּא עָרוֹם מִמַּעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים, אֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְהַפְרִישׁ אֲחֵרִים מֵרִשְׁעָתָם.
A person who is devoid of good deeds cannot get others to separate from their evil ways.
ג. הַתַּעֲנִית קָשָׁה מֵחֶרֶב.
Fasting is harder [on the body] than the sword.
ד. הַתְּשׁוּבָה רָאוּי, שֶׁתִּהְיֶה בְּאוֹתוֹ דָּבָר עַצְמוֹ.
Repentance should ideally entail the very same thing [through which one sinned].
ה. כְּשֶׁאָדָם. חוֹשֵׁב: כָּךְ וְכָךְ אֶעֱשֶׂה, כָּךְ וְכָךְ תַּעֲלֶה בְּיָדִי, עַל יְדֵי זֶה אֵין מַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹ נִתְקַיֵּם.
When a person thinks to himself, “By doing this and that I will achieve such and such,” his thought will not materialize.
ו. גָּלוּת מְכַפֶּרֶת עַל הַכּל.
Exile atones for everything.
ז. מִי שֶׁדַּעְתּוֹ שְׁפֵלָה, כְּאִלּוּ הִקְרִיב כָּל הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת.
When a person is humble, it is as if he offered all the various sacrifices.
ח. כָּל הַמִּתְוַּדֶּה, יֵשׁ לוֹ חֵלֶק לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא.
Anyone who confesses his sins has a share in the World to Come.
ט. הַמְלַמֵּד אֶת בֶּן חֲבֵרוֹ תּוֹרָה, כְּאִלּוּ עֲשָׂאוֹ וּכְאִלּוּ עֲשָׂאוֹ לְדִבְרֵי תוֹרָה וּכְאִלּוּ עֲשָׂאוֹ לְעַצְמוֹ.
Whoever teaches Torah to the son of a fellow Jew, it is as if he created the child, created the words of Torah, and also created himself.
י. רַב פָּפָּא יְתִיב בְּתַעֲנִיתָא, עַל שֶׁקָרָא לְתַלְמִיד חָכָם בִּלְשׁוֹן גְּנַאי.
Rabbi Papa fasted for having referred to a Torah scholar in a disrespectful manner.
יא. יִשְׁמר אָדָם אֶת פִּיו מִלּוֹמַר: אֶעֱשֶׂה הָעֲבֵרָה הַזּאת אֲפִילּוּ בְּדֶרֶךְ לֵיצָנוּת, כִּי דִּבּוּרוֹ מַכְרִיחַ אוֹתוֹ לְמַעֲשֶׂה.
One should never even jokingly say, “I am going to commit such and such a sin,” because his words have the power to compel him to action.
יב. כָּל הַבּוֹכֶה בַּלַּיְלָה, קוֹלוֹ נִשְׁמָע, וְכוֹכָבִים וּמַזָּלוֹת בּוֹכִין עִמּוֹ.
When a person cries at night, his voice is heard, and the stars and constellations cry with him.
יג. חַיָּבֵי כְּרִיתוּת שֶׁלָּקוּ, נִפְטְרוּ מִידֵי כְּרִיתָתָן.
Punishment by flogging exempts those who would otherwise deserve death by excision.
יד. כְּשֶׁבָּא צַעַר לָעוֹלָם, יַחֲשׁב שֶׁבִּשְׁבִיל חֶטְאוֹ בָּא זאת הַצָּרָה.
A person should consider his sins to be the cause of the world’s suffering.
טו. הַמַּלְבּוּשִׁין שֶׁעוֹשִׂין לַצַּדִּיק, כָּל מַלְבּוּשׁ יֵשׁ לוֹ סְגֻלָּה בִּפְנֵי עַצְמוֹ לְכַפֵּר.
Each article of clothing made for the Tzaddik carries its own special power of atonement.
טז. כֵּיוָן שֶׁנָּשָׂא אָדָם אִשָּׁה, עֲווֹנוֹתָיו מִתְפַּקְּקִין.
Once a man takes a wife, his sins are contained.
יז. כְּשֶׁרוֹאֶה אוֹ שֶׁשָּׁמַע אֵיזֶה יִסּוּרִים, שֶׁבָּא עַל גּוֹי, יְהַרְהֵר בִּתְשׁוּבָה.
When a Jew sees or hears about the suffering of a gentile, he should think of repenting.
יח. הַדָּר בְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, שָׁרוּי בְּלא עָווֹן.
Whoever lives in the Land of Israel resides without sin.
יט. יֵשׁ לְהָקֵל אפֶן הַתְּשׁוּבָה עַל הַחוֹטְאִים.
It is best to make it easier for sinners to repent.
כ. הֶעָווֹן מַכְחִישׁ כּחוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם.
Sin saps a person’s strength.
כא. כְּשֶׁבָּאִין שְׁנֵי מִצְווֹת לְיָדְךָ, תַּעֲשֶׂה זאת הַמִּצְוָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ בָּהּ כְּפִיַּת. הַיֵּצֶר יוֹתֵר.
Given the possibility of performing one of two *mitzvot,*choose the one that involves overcoming your evil inclination.
כב. צְרִיכִין לְהִתְעַנּוֹת, כְּשֶׁמְּצַעֲרִין אֶת הַצַּדִּיק.
A person who causes the Tzaddik suffering should fast.
כג. צַעַר הַלֵּב הוּא קָרוֹב לְהוֹרִיד דְּמָעוֹת.
A person who feels heartache is close to shedding tears.
כד. הַמַּחֲזִיר בְּנֵי אָדָם, בִּתְשׁוּבָה זוֹכֶה וְיוֹשֵׁב בִּישִׁיבָה שֶׁל מַעְלָה, וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְבַטֵּל הַגְּזֵרָה בִּשְׁבִילוֹ.
When a person brings others back to God in repentance, he is rewarded with a place in the heavenly Academy and the Holy One annuls a harsh decree for his sake.
כה. חֲלִישׁוּת דַּעְתּוֹ שֶׁל הָאָדָם הוּא גְדוֹלָה מִתַּעֲנִית.
Dismay does more [for achieving repentance] than fasting.
כו. הָעוֹשֶׂה דְּבַר עֲבֵרָה וּמִתְחָרֵט בָּהּ, מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ עַל כָּל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו.
A person who sins and feels remorse is forgiven for all his sins.
כז. הַנּוֹשֵׂא וְנוֹתֵן בֶּאֱמוּנָה, מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ עַל כָּל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו.
A person who conducts his business affairs honestly is forgiven for all his sins.
כח. תְּחִלַּת הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה עוֹזֶרֶת לָאָדָם לְאֶמְצַע וְסוֹף הַמַעֲשֶּׂה, שֶׁיֻּמְשַׁךְ בִּקְדֻשָּׁה, וְאִם לא חָשַׁב בִּקְדֻשָּׁה בִּתְחִלָּה, אָז יֶאֱרַע תַּקָּלָה בְּאֶמְצַע וּבַסּוֹף.
A person’s original intentions help him carry out and conclude his actions in holiness. But if his original thoughts lacked holiness, he will encounter mishap after mishap to the very end.
כט. שֻׁלְחָן בְּהַכְנָסַת אוֹרְחִים מְכַפֶּרֶת.
The table upon which guests are served atones for sins.
ל. הַגְּדֻלָּה מְכַפֶּרֶת.
Increased prominence atones for sins.
לא. לִפְעָמִים כְּשֶׁמַּתְחִיל לַעֲשוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה, בָּאִין לוֹ יִסּוּרִים, זֶה מִפְּנֵי שֶׁשָּׁהָה מִלַּעֲשוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה.
There are times when a person who has begun to repent encounters suffering. This is because he had previously delayed returning to God.
לב. עַל יְדֵי אֲנָחָה שֶׁנֶּאֱנַח, נַעֲשֲׂה בְּרִיָּה חֲדָשָׁה.
When one sighs, he becomes a new person.
לג. עַל יְדֵי אַהֲבַת צַּדִּיקִים יְכוֹלִין הַצַּדִּיקִים לְהַחֲזִיר אֶת הָעָם בִּתְשׁוּבָה.
The love that people have for the Tzaddikim enables the Tzaddikim bring the masses back to God in repentance.
לד. מִי שֶׁמַּחֲזִיר אֶת הָעָם בִּתְשׁוּבָה, בִּזְכוּתוֹ אֵין פַּחַד וּמַחֲלקֶת בָּעוֹלָם.
In the merit of a person who brings the masses to repent, fear and controversy disappear from the world.
לה. מִי שֶׁעוֹזֵר לִיתוֹמִים, עַל יְדֵי זֶה מְשַׁבֵּר כּחָם שֶׁל הָאֻמּוֹת וְעַל יְדֵי שְׁבִירָתָן, רִשְׁעֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל חוֹזְרִין בִּתְשׁוּבָה.
By helping orphans, a person breaks the power of the nations. And by breaking them, wicked Jews return to God in repentance.
לו. מִי שֶׁמַּחֲזִיר בְּנֵי אָדָם בִּתְשׁוּבָה, נִצּוֹל מִבֵּית הָאֲסוּרִים.
A person who brings others to repent is saved from imprisonment.
לז. גַּם הוּא מְכֻבָּד בְּעֵינֵי הַשֵּׁם.
He is also honored by God
לח. גַּם זוֹכֶה לִהְיוֹת מְפֻרְסָם בֵּין הָאֻמּוֹת.
and achieves fame among the nations.
לט. מִי שֶׁדַּרְכּוֹ תָּמִיד לְהַחֲזִיר בְּנֵי אָדָם בִּתְשׁוּבָה, בִּזְכוּתוֹ מְבַטֵּל מַחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת מִגְּדוֹלֵי הַדּוֹר.
When a person perpetually brings others to repent, the disturbing thoughts of the generation’s leaders are eliminated in his merit.
מ. מִי שֶׁמַּחֲזִיר רְשָׁעִים בִּתְשׁוּבָה, יִזְכֶּה לִשְׁמִירַת שַׁבָּת.
One who brings wicked people back to God in repentance merits observing Shabbat.
מא. גַּם אֵינוֹ נִזּוֹק מִנָּחָשׁ.
He will also not be harmed by a snake.
מב. כְּשֶׁתְּלַמֵּד אֶת בֶּן רָשָׁע דֶּרֶךְ טוֹב, עַל יְדֵי זֶה תּוּכַל לְבַטֵּל גְּזֵרוֹת.
By teaching the proper path to a wicked person’s son, you will have the power to nullify harsh decrees.
מג. עַל יְדֵי שֶׁקֶר מַחֲזִיק יְדֵי רְשָׁעִים.
Falsehood strengthens the hand of the wicked.
מד. מִי שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה תְּשׁוּבָה בְּכָל לֵב, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא נוֹתֵן לוֹ לֵב לָדַעַת אוֹתוֹ.
Whoever repents wholeheartedly, the Holy One gives him a heart through which to know Him.
מה. עַל יְדֵי שְׁמִיעַת קוֹל שׁוֹפָר מֵאָדָם כָּשֵׁר הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע נִשְׁבָּר, וְנִתְעוֹרֵר תְּשׁוּבָה בָּעוֹלָם.
Hearing the shofar blown by a devout individual breaks the evil inclination and awakens repentance throughout the world.
מו. מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לָשׁוּב, יִזָּהֵר מִלִּהְיוֹת בַּעַל חוֹב.
A person who wants to repent should avoid being in debt.
מז. מִי שֶׁאוֹהֵב אֶת הַצַּדִּיקִים, יָכוֹל לְהַחֲזִיר אֶת בְּנֵי אָדָם בִּתְשׁוּבָה.
One who loves the Tzaddikim is capable of bringing people back to God in repentance.
מח. מִי שֶׁמִּתְוַדֶּה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אוֹהֵב אוֹתוֹ אַהֲבַת נְדָבָה וּמֵשִׁיב מִמֶּנּוּ חֲרוֹן אַפּוֹ.
When a person confesses his sins, God loves him benevolently and removes His anger from him.
מט. הָאֻמּוֹת הֵם קְרוֹבֵי תְּשׁוּבָה.
The nations bring us to repent.
נ. לִמּוּד הַתּוֹרָה הִיא מְכַפֶּרֶת.
Studying Torah atones for one’s sins.
נא. מִי שֶׁהוּא בְּמַדְרֵגָה גְּדוֹלָה, יָכוֹל לְהַשִּׂיג שְׁלֵמוּתוֹ בְּמִעוּט פְּעֻלּוֹת.
A person on a high spiritual level can attain perfection with but a minimum of effort.
נב. כְּשֶׁאֵיזֶה צַעַר בָּא עָלֶיךָ, תְּפַשְׁפֵּשׁ בְּמַעֲשֶׂיךָ.
Whenever you are beset by suffering, scrutinize your actions.
נג. מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לַעֲשוֹת מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים וְיֵשׁ לוֹ מְנִיעוֹת, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְשַׁלֵּם לוֹ שָׂכָר כְּאִלּוּ עָשָׂה, וּמִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה לְפִי יְכָלְתּוֹ, אֲזַי מְקַבֵּל ענֶשׁ עַל זֶה.
When a person wants to perform a good deed but encounters obstacles, God rewards him as if he had succeeded. However, when a person doesn’t do even what he is capable of, he is punished for it.
נד.. מִי שֶׁמְּזַכֶּה אֶת הָרַבִּים, נַעֲשֲׂה שֻׁתָּף לַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית.
By bringing merit to the masses a person becomes God’s partner in Creation.
נה. אֵין עֵרֶךְ לְמִצְוָה שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה אָדָם לְעַצְמוֹ לְבַד, אֲפִילּוּ שֶׁתִּהְיֶה רַבָּה, לְמִצְוָה שֶׁתִּמָּשֵׁךְ מִמֶּנָּה זְכוּת לָרַבִּים, אֲפִילּוּ שֶׁתִּהְיֶה קְטַנָּה.
A mitzvah, no matter how great, which a person does and thereby brings merit only to himself cannot compare to even a minor mitzvah through which he brings merit to the masses.
נו. הַפַּרְנָסָה וְהַשּׂוֹנְאִים וְהַחוֹלַאַת וְרִבּוּי הָעשֶׁר הֵן הַמּוֹנְעִין לָאָדָם מֵהַגִּיעַ אֶל הַשְּׁלֵמוּת וְהַתַּכְלִית.
[Insufficient] income, enemies, sickness and great wealth are obstacles that deter a person from attaining perfection and his ultimate purpose.
נז. כְּשֶׁאַתָּה עוֹשֶׂה אֵיזֶה הֶזֵּק, זֶה הַסִּימָן שֶׁיֵּצֶר הָרָע שׁוֹלֵט עָלֶיךָ.
When you are the cause of some damage, it is a sign that your evil inclination has control over you.
נח. מִי שֶׁמֵּסִית אֶת חֲבֵרוֹ מִדֶּרֶךְ הַטּוֹב, שְׂרֵפָה בָּא עָלָיו.
One who lures a fellow Jew from the proper path will be punished by fire.
נט. מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לִבְכּוֹת, הַסְּגֻלָּה שֶׁיֵּשֵׁב בְּמָקוֹם, שֶׁשּׁוֹפְכִים שָׁם שְׁנֵי נְהָרוֹת בְּיַחַד.
A segulah for anyone who cannot bring himself to cry is to sit at the spot where the flow of two rivers meet and become one.
ס. מִי שֶׁמַּחֲזִיר אֶת בְּנֵי אָדָם בִּתְשׁוּבָה, זוֹכֶה לְחָכְמָה.
One who brings people back to God in repentance merits wisdom.
סא. עַל יְדֵי הָעַצְלוּת נִדְמֶה לְאָדָם, שֶׁנִּסְתָּר מִמֶּנּוּ דֶּרֶךְ הַתְּשׁוּבָה.
A person’s laziness leads him to believe that the path of repentance is hidden from him.
סב. מִי שֶׁמְּגַלֶּה סוֹדוֹתָיו, אֲזַי קָשֶׁה לַדָּבָר הַזֶּה לְהִתְקַיֵּם.
By disclosing his secret, it becomes difficult to carry it out.
סג. מִי שֶׁבּוֹשׁ עַל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עוֹשֶׂה עִמּוֹ צְדָקָה.
When a person is embarrassed by his sins, God deals charitably with him.
סד. הַתַּעֲנִית שֶׁהוּא בְּלא דַּעַת אֵינוֹ תַּעֲנִית.
When fasting is not accompanied by daat, it is not considered fasting.
סה. מִשָּׁעָה שֶׁאָדָם חוֹשֵׁב לַעֲשוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה, אֲזַי מְקַבְּלִין תְּפִילָּתוֹ, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁלּא עָשָׂה עֲדַיִן.
From the moment a person considers repenting, his prayers are accepted, even if he hasn’t yet returned to God.
סו. כְּשֶׁתִּרְצֶה לַעֲשוֹת תְּשׁוּבָה, תְּבַקֵּשׁ מֵהַצַּדִּיק, שֶׁהוּא יַכְנִיס אוֹתְךָ לִפְנֵי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ.
When you want to repent, ask the Tzaddik to bring you before God.
סז. עַל יְדֵי חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת יְכֻפָּר עָווֹן.
Sins are atoned through lovingkindness and truth.
סח. עַל יְדֵי שֶׁתְּבַקֵּשׁ מֵהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, שֶׁיִּתֵּן. לְךָ אַהֲבָה, עַל יְדֵי זֶה יְכַסֶּה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא פְּשָׁעֶיךָ.
Asking God for His love causes Him to cover over your transgressions.
סט. מִי שֶׁמִּתְוַדֶּה עַל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו, יִזְכֶּה שֶׁלּא יִצְטָרֵךְ לִמְכּר מִנַּחֲלַת אֲבוֹתָיו.
A person who confesses his sins is spared from having to sell what he inherited from his ancestors.
ע. כְּשֶׁאַתָּה מוֹכִיחַ אוֹתָם, שֶׁלּא תִּקְּנוּ חַטַּאת נְעוּרִים, תִּכְלל אֶת עַצְמְךָ עִמָּהֶם, וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה יְקַבְּלוּ מִמְּךָ.
When rebuking others for not rectifying the sins committed in their youth, include yourself among them and your words will be accepted.
עא. עִקַּר תִּקּוּן פְּגַם עֲווֹנוֹתָיו עַל יְדֵי הַכְנָעָה.
The best way to rectify the spiritual damage caused by one’s sins is through humility.
עב. צָרִיךְ אָדָם לְהוֹכִיחַ אֶת עַצְמוֹ בְכָל בּקֶר.
A person must give himself rebuke each morning.
עג. הָעַבְדוּת שֶׁאָדָם עוֹבֵד אֶת הַשֵּׁם בְּבַחֲרוּתוֹ כָּל יוֹם, עֶרְכּוֹ יָקָר מִשָּׁנִים רַבּוֹת שֶׁל עֲבוֹדָה לְעֵת זִקְנָתוֹ.
Each day a person serves God during his youth is more valuable than many years of such devotion when he is old.
עד. אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיֵּדַע אָדָם בְּחַיָּיו, אִם נִתְקַבֵּל תְּשׁוּבָתוֹ.
During a person’s lifetime it is impossible for him to know if his repentance has been accepted.
עה. מַה שֶׁאָנוּ רוֹאִים, שֶׁמִי שֶׁמַּתְחִיל לַעֲבד אֶת ה', יִסּוּרִים בָּאִין עָלָיו, זֶה מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהִתְחִיל מִתּוֹךְ יִרְאָה שֶׁל צֶדֶק.
We often see that a person is beset by suffering when he begins serving God. The reason for this is that his initial motivation stemmed from his fear of justice.
עו. הַמַּתְחִיל לַעֲבד אֶת ה', הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אוֹמֵר לוֹ: יוֹדֵעַ אֲנִי, שֶׁחֶפְצְךָ וּרְצוֹנְךָ לַעֲבד אוֹתִי, אֲבָל מַה הוּא הַבְּטוּחוֹת שֶׁמָּא לְמָחָר תַּעֲזב אוֹתִי, אִם כֵּן אֵיךְ אֲקָרֵב אוֹתְךָ בִּשְׁבִיל הָרָצוֹן שֶׁרָצִיתָ, וְאֵיךְ אֲגַלֶּה לְךָ תֵּכֶף דְּבָרִים נִסְתָּרִים, אֶלָּא כֵּן תַּעֲשֶׂה: בִּתְחִלָּה אֱהַב אוֹתִי כָּךְ וְתַעֲשֶׂה מִצְווֹתַי, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵין אַתָּה יוֹדֵעַ הַשֵּׂכֶל שֶׁל הַמִּצְוָה, וַעֲבד אוֹתִי פָּשׁוּט. בְּלא חָכְמוֹת, וּכְשֶׁתַּעֲבד אוֹתִי כַּמָּה זְמַנִּים, אֲזַי אַאֲמִין לְךָ וַאֲגַּלֶּה לְךָ טַעַם וְשֵׂכֶל שֶׁל כָּל דָּבָר וְדָבָר וַאֲקָרֵב אוֹתְךָ בְּכָל מִינֵי הִתְקָרְבוּת, כִּי הַזְּמַן הָרַב שֶׁעָבַדְתָּ אוֹתִי מִקּדֶם הוּא בְּטוּחוֹת, שֶׁלּא תַּעֲזב אוֹתִי [הֵן אֱמֶת].
When a person begins serving God, the Holy One says to him: “I know that your desire and will is to serve Me, but what assurances do I have that tomorrow you won’t leave Me? If so, how can I draw you closer by virtue of your will alone? And how can I immediately reveal hidden things to you? Rather, you must do as follows: Start by showing your love for Me in the present situation, and perform My mitzvoteven though you do not comprehend them. And serve Me with simplicity, without sophistication. After you’ve done this for some time, I will then believe you and reveal to you the reason and wisdom behind each and every thing. I will also draw you closer in all kinds of ways. For the extended time you served Me previously will guarantee that you won’t leave Me.”
עז. בָּזֶה יוֹדֵעַ הָאָדָם, שֶׁבֶּאֱמֶת הוּא רוֹצֶה לַעֲבד, כְּשֶׁאֵינוֹ רוֹצֶה בְּפִרְסוּמוֹ.
The way a person can tell that he truly wants to serve God is that he has no desire for recognition.
עח. מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ דֶּרֶךְ הַשֵּׁם, יַקְטִין אֶת עַצְמוֹ.
Whoever doesn’t know the way of God should humble himself.
עט. עַל יְדֵי תְּפִילָּה שֶׁהִיא בְּשַׁוְעָה יִמְחַל לְךָ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא.
By crying out your prayers God will forgive you.
פ. עַל יְדֵי שְׁקָרִים אֵין אָדָם יָכוֹל לְהֵיטִיב מַעֲשָׂיו.
Falsehood prevents a person from improving his ways.
פא. מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְבַטֵּל אֶת הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע עַל יְדֵי הַמְשָׁכַת אוֹתוֹ לְבֵית הַמִּדְרָשׁ, יֵדַע שֶׁעֲדַיִן בְּרִשְׁעָתוֹ קַיָּם.
A person who cannot eliminate his evil inclination by “dragging it to the house of study” (see Sukkah 52b) should know that he hasn’t abandoned his evil ways.
פב. הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא חָפֵץ בְּמִצְווֹת, שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה בָּהֶם גַּם רְצוֹן הַבְּרִיּוֹת, יוֹתֵר מִבְּמִצְווֹת שֶׁבֵּין אָדָם לְקוֹנוֹ.
God prefers those mitzvot that are also pleasing to people over those that are exclusively between man and his Maker.
פג. מוּטָב לָאָדָם לְקַיֵּם הַמִּצְוָה כְּפִי הָאֶפְשָׁר, מִלְהַנִּיחַ לְגַמְרֵי.
It is better to perform a mitzvah to whatever degree possible than to not do it at all.
פד. תִּקּוּן הַגּוּף קדֶם תִּקּוּן הַנֶּפֶשׁ.
Caring for the body precedes rectifying the soul.
פה. הַבּוֹכֶה וּמִתְאַבֵּל עַל אָדָם כָּשֵׁר, מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ עַל כָּל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו.
One who cries over and mourns the passing of a devout individual has all his sins forgiven.
פו. מִצְוָה לְהַחֲזִיר [לְהַזְּהִיר] אֶת בְּנֵי אָדָם עַל כָּל דְּבַר פֶּשַׁע, וְאִם אַתָּה יָרֵא, שֶׁלּא יִשְׁמַע לְךָ תּאמַר דְּבָרֶיךָ בְּשֵׁם צַדִּיק אַחֵר, כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּשְׁמְעוּ אוֹתְךָ.
It is a mitzvah to warn people about any transgression. Should you fear that they will not listen to you, tell it to them in the name of a Tzaddik so that they will take heed.
פז.. כָּל הָאוֹמֵר "וַיְכֻלוּ" בְּכַוָּנָה וּמִתְפַּלֵּל בְּכַוָּנָה, מַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת מְבַקְשִׁין מֵהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ שֶׁיְּכַפֵּר לוֹ.
When anyone attentively recites the verses of Va’yechulu(Genesis 2:1-3) and prays with concentration, the ministering angels ask God to pardon his sins.
פח. הָעוֹנֶה "אָמֵן יְהֵא שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא" בְּכָל כּחוֹ, אֲפִילּוּ יֵשׁ בּוֹ שֶׁמֶץ שֶׁל עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה, מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ.
When a person responds “Amen, may His name be great!” with all his might, even if he has in him a bit of idolatry, he will be forgiven.
פט. אֵלּוּ אֵין רוֹאִין פְּנֵי גֵּיהִנּוֹם: דִּקְדוּקֵי עֲנִיּוּת וְחוֹלֵי מֵעַיִם וּמִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ נוֹשִׁים וְעל מַלְכוּת.
The following are spared the suffering of hell: the extremely poor, those who suffer intestinal disease, and those oppressed by creditors or the government.
צ. הִתְחַזֵּק בַּמִּצְווֹת יוֹתֵר מִמַּה שֶּׁהַיְכלֶת בְּיָדְךָ.
Perform even more mitzvot than you are capable of.
צא. הֶפְסֵד מָמוֹן מְכַפֵּר עַל גּוּפוֹ.
A monetary loss exonerates a person from physical punishment.
צב. הַצִּמָּאוֹן הוּא תִּקּוּן דְּבָרִים בְּטֵלִים.
Thirst rectifies the sin of idle chatter.
צג. הַתְּשׁוּבָה מְבִיאָה רְפוּאָה לָעוֹלָם.
Repentance brings healing to the world.
צד. תְּשׁוּבָה מִיִּרְאָה זְדוֹנוֹת נַעֲשִׂין כִּשְׁגָגוֹת, וּמֵאַהֲבָה נַעֲשִׂין כִּזְכֻיּוֹת.
When a person’s repentance is motivated by a fear of God, his intentional sins are reckoned as errors. But when he is motivated by a love for God, they are transformed into merit.
צה. תְּשׁוּבָה מְקָרֶבֶת אֶת הַגְּאֻלָּה וּמַאֲרֶכֶת יָמָיו וּשְׁנוֹתָיו שֶׁל אָדָם.
Repentance hastens the Final Redemption and lengthens a person’s days and years.
צו. עַל יְדֵי תְּשׁוּבַת יָחִיד מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ וּלְכָל הָעוֹלָם כֻּלּוֹ.
When an individual repents, he is forgiven and so is the whole world.
צז. הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא נִתְפַּיֵּס עַל יְדֵי וִדּוּי, וְדוֹמֶה כְּאִלּוּ בָּנָה מִזְבֵּחַ וְהִקְרִיב קָרְבָּן.
God is appeased by a person’s confession of his sins, which is like his having built an altar and brought a sacrifice.
צח. מִי שֶׁמַּעֲבִיר עַל מִדּוֹתָיו, מַעֲבִירִין לוֹ עַל כָּל פְּשָׁעָיו.
Whoever overlooks personal affronts has all his transgressions overlooked.
צט. הַתּוֹרָה וּגְמִילוּת חֲסָדִים מְכַפְּרִין.
Torah and acts of kindness atone for a person’s sins.
ק. צְעָקָה וּבְכִיָּה בַּלַּיְלָה יוֹתֵר נִשְׁמַעַת לְרַחֵם.
Screams and cries for God’s mercy are most effective at night.
קא. בַּעַל תְּשׁוּבָה יִתְפַּלֵּל עַל הַגֶּשֶׁם, וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה מְכַפְּרִין לוֹ עַל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו.
A baal teshuvah should pray for rain and all his transgressions will be pardoned.
קב. כְּשֶׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל מִתְעַנִּין, אֵין נַעֲנִין, עַד שֶׁיִּהְיוּ עִם רְשָׁעִים בַּאֲגֻדָּה.
Jews who fast are not answered by God unless there are some wicked people among them.
קג. הַדֶּרֶךְ שֶׁיָּבוֹר לוֹ הָאָדָם, שֶׁיֶּאֱהַב אֶת הַתּוֹכָחוֹת. וְיַחֲזִיק בֶּאֱמוּנָה יְתֵרָה.
The path that a person should choose is to love reproof and be steadfast in faith.
